Very painful episode. I found, many years ago, that I have problems with sacerdotally preached dithematic paradoxes. I am reminded of Dave Allen's chat to his audience about his upbringing within Catholicism and being sent to a school run by nuns. Firstly, he is told - as a four-year-old - that "God is everywhere". Young Dave asks so "Why can't I see him? . . . " and then lists various locations where he might be, for instance, "Is he under the stairs?" The nun, standing there 'flapping' in annoyance with this child, whom she accuses of being an atheist, doesn't seem to cotton on that she has just tried to convince young Dave, of her 'truth', via paradoxically, at first, saying that "God is everywhere!", but then stated firmly that he is "not under the stairs or in the cupboard!" It's very basic to young Dave, as it should be to everyone, that she really does mentally swim within an ocean of confused dysfunction when it comes to causality!

I do cry on this every time. It’s interesting how I was with Franklin 20 years ago and now I understand the power of belief and where he made a mistake. You are going to get your wish about a Garibaldi focused episode sooner than you may think

Btw: Angela. I noticed, upon replay of your reaction to the Doctor Who episode, 'Flatline' that you had an issue with someone calling Clara "love". In the UK, the word doesn't always signify a term of close affection. "Love" or "Darling" can be used by any gender variation just to mean a term of human fellowship, like saying "Don't worry, mate. Come and have a pint!" A woman might say, "Not to worry, love! I'm sure it'll turn out for the best!" without any presumption from the other party that it means a promise of close or meaningful affection. It's just used casually and is possibly starting to seem a bit old-fashioned. In the UK: Words like "love" remain common and are used freely by shop assistants, bus drivers, and neighbours, though some younger speakers or professional circles view them as dated or overly familiar.

Well, I mean, if someone is isn't comparing B5 to real life politics .. are they actually watching the show? That's like the whole point of the show... In regards to this specific episode, as far as this kind of moral dilemma goes, B5 probably handled it better than most. There is simply no answer to this dilemma. I personally tend to agree with Dr. Franklin .. for the most part. For one, I think the kid's wishes should have the most weight in regards to this question, it is his future in the end, so Franklin ignoring him is probably my biggest problem with his decision. On the other hand, I do think he has a word in this (not as a god figure though) ... believe-systems are not something you are born with, this is something you are brought into by others (most of time), so him challenging this believe system is valid. The same way others argued this believe onto you. But, Franklin ignoring his wishes, regardless of how logical his reasoning is, is simply a slippery slope. If you go down this road, where do you stop? Is there even self-determination, if all your decision have to align with "logic"? What is this logic even based on? I'm sure Kosh/Vorlonsm being the most advanced race on B5, have a way different basis for this. Shouldn't his decision then being the one to follow? Also, simply going over their decision allows the other side to enforce their believe onto you as well. Overall, I think the show handled this discussion very well. Especially with how difficult this topic is. Oh also, the Ivanova B-Plot very much feels like filler, as in there is simply no topic which could be paired with this kind of A-Plot.

u rly think they shoudl let the child die ? then whats the problem with saving it ... the parents wont have a child anyways ... people who kill their child because of denying them treatment becuase of culture or religion should not bee allowed to have children at least in europe if parents would decide thiy way, the parenthood wood been taken away from them into state custody so the operation could be done. sry but parents aint having the right to kill the child and its to young to understand it themself

Ray (Fanporium)

This is the one episode I always skip in rewatches. Not because it's bad. But because it's too emotionally raw.

Jbb

I have said it before. JMS does NOT pull punches on any topic. This is just the beginning.

JBK405

There's actually a semi-funny Behind The Scenes reason for why you didn't see the fight between Ivanova and the Raiders, but to explain it is a spoiler given what they were talking about behind-the-scenes. So in a few seasons I'll pop up again and say "BY THE WAY!"

James Fleischman

Dr. Stephen Franklin: I'm waiting. For an apology. Sinclair: You better check the temperature in Hell first.

Every major character you've met so far, and several more to come, will get their chance to shine! In fact, you'll be introduced to one of those shiny new characters in a couple of episodes from this one. 🙂

Listen, one of the things that I think always irritates me about shows representations of "atheist" doctors and scientists is they are invariable painted as arrogant people who believe they are god. Like it always seems atheists in popular media are written by believers who hate them. Another commenter mentioned that his biggest problem with Franklin in this episode was disregarding the child's wishes, and that's probably where I find myself. But people who kill kids because of their beliefs . . . Whatever your feelings about Franklin overstepping his ethical bounds, the parents rejecting their child and deciding to murder him is the far greater evil.

This isn’t the only time religion and beliefs will be the focus of an episode. The great thing about JMS’ writing is there is no right answer to these hard questions. The fact that Babylon 5 puts episodes like this in is why it is one of the best TV series of all time. It’s not afraid to ask the hard questions that have no good answer. “The avalanche has started, it is too late for the pebbles to vote.” Is one of the best lines ever written and fits Babylon 5 so well.

Mark Ten

I dislike when shows put children in danger. I know its fiction but I usually get angry about using kids that way. That aside, this is really well acted

TheUndeadFish

This is one of those rare cases of an episode that seems to have nothing to with the "main story" but yet it's such a weighty episode that it feels impossible ever say it could be skipped. Good writing indeed. A couple comments from J. Michael Straczynski on it: * "When I developed the basic Believers story, and was looking for someone to assign it to, David was the first person we went to. He asked me at the time why him...he's more generally associated with humorous stuff. I had my reasons. See, lately, David adopted a young boy, about the same age as Shon. So about halfway into the outline, David called and said, "NOW I understand." I knew that having a child of his own now would mean that the story would be a lot more personal. Especially the end scene, which I knew would have to be done *very* carefully. I think David did a great job, and under his guidance it turned into a very moving episode. And with any luck, he'll write more down the road. " * "How Ivanova got away from the Raiders was taking advantage of her lead to run away, occasionally firing backward to deter pursuit, until she got to the jumpgate. It wasn't really anything dramatically interesting, and at that point you would start distracting from the main plot...and that couldn't be allowed to happen. There's really no place in the rest of the act where you can cut in without destroying it."

advancements in medicine since this was written.... im like ultrasonic it no cutty cutty. go in through the mouth get to the lungs... expand a balloon to break the scar tissue

countless rewatches over the decades and this episode never fails to rip my heart out of my chest and toss it into a shredder

Dinker

Yeah I'm not watching the unedited version of this cause it's this fucking episode.

Dinker

For the record, Londo wasn't saying that it would be too expensive to help them. He was saying that he would help them if they bribed him.

Child welfare laws exist. Parents have to feed, clothe, and shelter their children. Parents are required to educate their children. Child labor laws exist. The point being: parents aren't allowed to do whatever they wish to their children, simply because they are parents. Society at large has decided that the welfare of children is a group responsibility. We could make a long list of a lot of religious values that are illegal in modern society. So, why should children be allowed to suffer or die simply because of the religious views of the parents?

Aidan Ilmari

I have to correct that at no point was Franklin thinking he was a god. He made a snappy comeback to Sinclair's assertion that deciding life or death for the child was "playing god" when it really is just being a doctor. Sinclair was essentially asking him to forgo being a doctor for the sake of diplomacy (which is a decision with merits, don't get me wrong).

Marshall Scott Poland

I don't think it's about you relating B5 to modern day politics. There are always parallels. I think some, such as myself, think maybe that there is some misunderstanding of what people mean i.e. common definitions. I saw this meme on X one time that talked about someone saying they loved pancakes, and a reply said, so you hate waffles? This interaction is what I see when politics is discussed between the "ultras" of the two wings of this messed up bird we call politics.

Brian Pickering

I remember the pain before having my gall bladder out. Pretty bad. Just hope you never have to deal with two collapsed lungs (later event, unrelated to the gall bladder.) Believe me, when COVID came around, I had NO DESIRE WHATSOEVER to be back on a ventilator.

Brian Pickering

That JMS was willing to address the hard questions (and didn't provide pat answers to them) is one of the reasons I'll always come back to B5 as great television.

Brian Pickering

B-Story is part of the overall season pattern that the Raiders are still a problem.

Brian Pickering

Which then results in the child being raised as an outsider from their race. I've said elsewhere, JMS loves addressing hard questions from multiple points of view, with respect for all, and refuses to come up with pat answers. As an atheist, yeah, I agree with you, perhaps the child would have been better off being brought up as a ward of the state. But we can't know that. Think of the experiment with monkeys that were brought up with "mothers" who were just metal skeletons and fur. I've seen pictures with those baby monkeys' expressions, and they look haunted, even as they were clinging to those manikins. Who's to say that the child would grow up feeling that same way being brought up as a ward of the state? I'm afraid of anyone who comes out of this episode with any single answer... I have to wonder just how deeply they've thought about the issues.

William Wood

This episode is excellent. Jeff did the right thing, he asked Shon. Who did not want the operation. Whilst I hold no beliefs, I do think when this comes up in shows you have to ask if a culture is something you can legitimately interfere in. B5 shows the worst case scenario when you do interfere. If Shon had been left alive, and shunned by his parents and people he would have been no better off, the psychological trauma would never have left him. It is a sad tale, but unfortunately cultures have to be respected, though not necessarily beliefs, as some beliefs are not linked to a culture, and also not always from a healthy mindset.

thejamppa

JMS himself hates cute kid trope. This was written by David Gerrod, who has written many Star Trek episode both TOS and TNG. JMS has stated: We have no cute kids and robots as regulars in the show. We have them as guest-stars once in a while, and we kill them." This has born 80's and 90's heavily used tropes to use cute kids and distraction from stories, Especially the real Ghostbusters, where JMS acted as main story editor. This time studio forced include cute kids etc in show and that is why JMS goes pretty much Anti-Wesley route every possible turn.

Peter

Dont you think that Kosh answer reflects his view on the world as the others reflect on theirs. I think it says a lot about Kosh.
