not really a spoiler, just a couple comments: The center of B5 would be zero-G and they played with this multiple times throughout the series. You already noted that the restraint system is different. They do continue to 'adjust' that in other episodes. The rate that B5 spun to create gravity was verified by NASA. The writers asked the engineers and then they made the CGI to match. The Starfury fighter design is actually brilliant with the 8 engines at the cardinal points. JMS sold the design concept to NASA for the commitment that if they were ever built, they had to use the name 'Starfury'. The host of the ISN news report you see on screen is consistent throughout the show. First time I watched I didn't really notice. It was just a nice bit of continuity - kinda like seeing the same CNN host over the course of years.

General Netter is named for producer Douglas Netter, who also provides the voice and face for President Santiago. I suspect you will particularly enjoy the next episode.

My favorite episode of the season!

Fr. Brench

We love News Correspondent Jane Nolastename!

James Fleischman

Not my favourite episode. I feel like the acting from the guest stars and Garibaldi is a little ropey. Also no B plot. And I feel like there isn't proper build up of the A plot. Still gets a 3.5 / 5 for me.

Fr. Brench

I was holding my tongue for several episodes... you were going a little hard on President Santiago based on the news summaries in episode 1 (understandably for that snippet). Now we finally get to hear that he's softening alien immigration policy to Earth and whatever else that will get stuck in Home Guard's craw. To hear that he's rather fond of Babylon 5 is also heartening. I can't wait to hear your crazy theories in more detail!

As a science major in college, I have to nerd out and run the spin calculation. According to the online specs, the station's diameter is 840 meters. The station is "5 miles long" (8 km) and 840 m is just over one tenth of this, so that seems reasonable from the CGI. The formula for centrifugal acceleration is a = ω²ρ where ω is the angular speed and ρ is the distance from the axis of rotation. Setting a = 9.8 m/s² (Earth gravity) and ρ = 420 m (half the diameter) gives ω = 0.15 /s. In other words, the cylinder should complete one full revolution in 1/ω = 6.5 seconds. That does appear to be the rotation speed in the CGI. (I originally thought the station was rotating way too fast, but the numbers check out.) Well done to all involved!

This episode is even more heartbreaking with the context that IRL Jerry Doyle was a struggling alcoholic. When he passed in 2016, the coroner ruled that chronic alcoholism was a significant contributing factor. So really, he was playing himself in this episode. His line about how much he enjoyed crawling back into the bottle is always a gut punch for me. RIP Jerry.

The Starfuries are one thing that sold me on the show early on. They don't just look realistic but the way the maneuver is realistic completely unlike all other SciFi of the time.

Mark Ten

I had forgotten that. Thanks for the remider

John

I could seriously enjoy you binging the show and getting 2, 3, even 5 episodes a week. But I think savoring it and thinking about each episode is the right choice. I watched Warp Reactor's reactions to the entire B5 series and there were some episodes that really go well together and the patrons convinced him to do a triple feature of three big episodes. It was great, but he didn't get the chance to fully immerse and think about each one, so it all kind of blurred together into one large episode. I think having to wait for it will make the payoff even better when you get there. I see you shiver with Antici.........PATION!

John

Londo is hands down my single favorite character in a cast full of amazing characters. I'll explain why at the appropriate time.

John

That's how they launch the Starfuries. They point them towards the opening and just release the clamps and let centripetal force take them out of the bay. They don't ignite their engines until after they're clear of the station.

John

"DIe Hard in space" Funny you should mention that. Jerry Doyle's first television role was on the series Moonlighting where he played one of several potential replacements for Bruce Willis' character

John

President Santiago is pro-alien immigration and cooperation. Home Guard is anti-alien.

MertzRocks

Actually watching your reactions (and another too - she's on 1x17 Tuesday) has made me start thinking that maybe S1 is better than S2 but it's ALL GREAT so let's GOOOOOOOOO!

Joshua Quintana

One nice character touch is if you go back over the last 11 episodes you'll notice that Michael doesn't drink alcahol once, and this plot point isn't thrown away after this episode.

MertzRocks

I place G'kar just a wee peg higher than Londo, just bc it's Andreas. He and Peter BOTH hit home runs with their roles (and so did Mira ofc!), but I think Londo is a 3-run homer that leaves the stadium completely while G'kar is a stand-up-inside-the-park-Grand-Slam! jmho now...

MertzRocks

That's funny. I used to watch that sometimes but it was my sister who was in love with it. I'm gonna tell her this bc she's a big B5 fan too.

Roy Graham

I hear what you're saying about Franklin last episode but go back to that chat where he talks about being Godly. People come to him expecting miracles. He can't always provide them. When that happens he catches all the blame too. His point is, if he's being forced to take the blame then he's claiming the authority to try to fix it. A comment borne not out of megalomania but frustration. As for Lianna's mannerisms, I think when people criticize season 1 this is one thing they mean. Once in a while a day player performance isn't quite up to the level of the main cast. I see what they were going for but like you said, too stiff.

MertzRocks

I hear Ogre all the way from Adams College (yeah still not graduated) yelling, with a red, scrunched-up face: "NNEEERRRRRRRRRRRDD!!!!" 🤓 👀 🏈

Marcus Hicks

This episode and the next one are two of my favourite Season 1 episodes.

Marcus Hicks

Every time I see the list of actors before the episode, I get sad thinking about how many of them we have lost 😢

Nikolay Andreev

My first time watching this in sync with my own copy. A new kind of experience for sure. Love how in a few moments you predicts what would happen next...emotionally. G'Car lines about the Universe being run by Matter, Energy and Enlighten self interest is definitely a T-Shirt material

John

And proud of it. The nerds shall inherit the earth.

John

I rank Andreas the better actor, but not by much. However, for reasons that must remain unsaid for now, Londo is still my favorite character. And that's a tight group of great characters to choose from. I look forward to discussing it when it would no longer offer any spoilers.

John

JMS doesn't throw away plot points. Even if they're never revisited, they are still important to the moment.

Eirik Myhr

100% agree about Franklin. Actually I never thought Lianna's stiff appearance was due to stiff acting – I thought she was putting on a mask, both for the people around her but also for herself. It was her coping mechanism.

TricksterDaemon

Franklin is my least favourite member of the B5 crew.

Roy Graham

I think you're right too, you can see the shift when she lightens up on Michael. But there's also the acting layer. Not that she was bad but just didn't come across as comfortable on screen as the main cast.
