Yes Capaldi can play guitar, he played in a band in the 80's called The Dreamboys, and was actually playing it in this episode.

OfficiallyGames

Peter does play the guitar as well as sing and is actively in a band and currently on tour. He actually preformed along side Franz Ferdinand at Glastonbury last year.

Merlin’s Cat

Peter was in a band back in the 80s with Craig Ferguson

Yeah season 9 rocks. Immediately from episode one, you can tell that this really is Capaldi's Doctor now. I don't feel like he gotto put much of himself into the Doctor in season 8, but now he can. And yes, that includes the electric guitar as Capaldi does indeed play it. Everybody is firing on full force in this season and the character chemistry is off the charts.

Lycanlux

One of the best Series of Doctor who and the reason Capaldi is my doctor (Yes Capaldi can play guitar and was in a band I believe), Also this series includes the second highest rated episode of Doctor Who on IMDB (Blink is number one if anyone is curious), So excited there will be laughs there will definitely be tears and above all some of the best written episodes of Doctor Who ever. May I make a recommendation of doing parts together? Up to you of course but I'm totally onboard for part 1 and part 2 together. (The episodes being in parts for series 9 is actually a call back to old who as all episodes were split into parts making 1 whole story until the reboot with Christopher we got just single episodes).

TGrimace

Oh yes. Peter is an excellent guitar player. It was him playing.

The Inedible Mattman

Peter Capaldi is the coolest human being who ever lived. He has been in bands since he was a teenager, played with Craig Ferguson in that band, too. He continues to be the great uncle that we all wish was our father. And now you can see why he's the best of the Nu Who's for many of us ... oh, and his hair!!!! Glorious! Okay, shutting up now.

Mark Ten

The Seventh Doctor tricked the Daleks using stolen Time Lord tech to blow up Skaro. Many see this as one of the acts that lead to the start of Time War. So in a way the Doctor committed a war crime. The 4th Doctor asked the question which was repeated here, basically, could you kill a child that you absolutely know will grow up to be a monster, killing millions of innocents? They didnt answer the question back then. Now we know, EXTERMINATE! After all, the Docctor is a good Dalek...

As others have said - yes Peter can play and he's in a band. I went to see him earlier this year. I've posted a couple of photos of him in the Doctor Who discord channel for anyone interested! I also had a photo op with him at comic con and I brought an inflatable guitar to it!!

Cei Stockport

The Doctor is a lot more laid back in Season 9 because he answered the question 'am I a good man' to his own satisfaction at the end of Season 8.

John

The season The Doctor got his mojo back.

Kate

The hand mines are terrifying tbh

DSJ.

Peter's still doing music, releasing albums - I went to see him do a gig back in Jan or Feb this year. It was great. I honestly can't remember if there was a trailer for this episode but I do remember that in like late 2014 or early 2015 - not too long before this episode aired, anyway - me and a friend went to a convention and got to meet one of the actors who'd played Davros back in Classic Who, and who still played Davros in audio dramas for Big Finish (a company that makes Doctor Who and other series audio dramas since the '90s, including many series with Paul McGann before Moffat brought him back to the silver screen(ish) for the 50th anniversary) - and we asked him (the Davros actor) whether he was doing any more audio dramas as Davros. He told us something along the lines of 'Big Finish isn't allowed to use the character Davros when the main show/BBC is planning on bringing him back'. Which was basically to say - Davros is gonna be in the next series of Doctor Who. So, some insider information there, and a fond memory. Sorry if that was a bit of an incoherent ramble lol, but I hope it made sense. Also, when you mentioned the commonality between series 4 and this series being Peter Capaldi, I was like, 'Oh yeah...' And then 'Hang on, they also have Davros and even the big red Supreme Dalek'!!!

Ejigantor

I don't remember seeing Davros in anything before the episode when it first aired, but I did know it was going to be a part 1 of 2 going in because they'd announced that ahead of time. I fell asleep the first several times I tried to watch Blade Runner.

That t shirt is from Capaldi’s actual wardrobe. There’s quite a few things 12 wears throughout his tenure that’s from Capaldi’s actual closet

Nathan Sill

Yes that is peter playing the guitar, he was in a band when he was younger with craig ferguson. he has actually recently started releasing music and doing tours. Im going to a show of his jn December

Rach

I love this cool uncle version of 12 and I double LOVE Missy. Especially now she's free from the depressing nature of last seasons finale, she's just sparkling in this. She's the perfect foil for 12, and a great antihero here

Jack Mingle

Yes, finally someone picked up on the Axe Fight joke.

Kevin (GiantFutures.com)

YES, believe it or not, Peter Capaldi does, in fact……have an Oscar. Sorry…so many people commented that he played the guitar, I had to add in something different. (Oh, and the Oscar is for directing and writing a short film. And he won it in 1995.) XAVIER…was that a Dispatch reference? Is there a chance we might get Ang having her heart destroyed by a fun, comedic video game? Please tell me there’s a chance! One chance in 1,000 is all I need! No, but seriously…I love that you’re here and this is truly that danged good of a season. Oh, and get ready for the “To Be Continued…” screens. This is not the last you’ll see this season. And…there will be times you wish there was one. Can’t wait to see if you waited….but I guess I have to wait. *sighs*

Kevin (GiantFutures.com)

Dude…that’s a find! I was wondering what HBO opening she was referring to…good call!

Kevin (GiantFutures.com)

Oh…what I’ve seen no one mention…Not only was Peter playing the guitar, but he was playing the Doctor Who theme!

funnylilgalreacts

Omg you’ve literally solved a centuries long mystery for me! I could’ve swore it was HBO and I said to my husband yesterday watch it be Cinemax

Earthen

The checkered pants are a callback to the first Doctor

Luck Dragon's Lair

I came here to post that it was Cinemax and you beat me to it *grin*

Carl Wilson

I was *exactly wondering that.

Carl Wilson

There is SO MUCH in this episode! Have we ever gone so many places so quickly? I had completely forgotten that the "hand mines" scenes and the Clara + Missy in the square with the planes/snipers scenes were in the same episode, and a bunch else. (In fact I'd forgotten Missy was in this episode at all.) I think the reality in which Clara was a Dalek and a nanny and so on might already have been changed by the whole crazy timeline story in series 7? But I'm not sure.

Stephen Wray

And so begins the 2 parter season

Nicholas Sulikowski

Yes indeed, Peter can play the guitar. I believe he was in an amateur band as a youth. He also used to write to Doctor Who Magazine in the 70s and even submitted fan art. Also, that old footage with the Fourth Doctor grappling with whether or not he could kill a child that he knew would grow up to become a ruthless dictator....that's from the classic series serial Genesis of the Daleks. If ever you decide to check out Classic Who, this one is highly recommended. It features the origin of the Daleks plus being the first Davros story, ties into modern episodes like this one as well as "The Stolen Earth"/"Journey's End" from series 4, and it also has Sarah Jane Smith as a companion.

ZapWing

I imagine that Moffat and the director told Peter that they only had the rights to 'Pretty Woman' for the first 2 bars and that they had to repeatedly tell Peter to stop playing because they don't have the rights for the rest of the song.

ZapWing

Also, Peter Capaldi isn't the only musician in his family. He is also related to Lewis Capaldi and starred in Lewis' music video "Someone you Loved".
