"Everything is clashing together...." The name Doohan is a nod to the Star Trek actor.

So just as a point of clarity, I'm pretty sure the movie is implied to take place vaguely SOMEWHERE between episodes of the show, but there's no really good indicator to figure out where exactly it's supposed to go, but it does still feel most correct to watch it after the series. You're absolutely right in that you come to love these characters and it hurts to know your time with them is up, and I think that's what makes saving the movie till after feel so right. You get a chance to grieve the series being over, then you get to go have one last adventure with your friends to give yourself some closure. Regardless of what order you take things in though, there really just is never any way to adequately prepare yourself for something like this to end.

The Columbia being in this episode is a bit of a future anachronism. The show aired before the disaster, but I'm glad they never tried to retcon it. It sort of makes it like a little memento or something. One more heroic flight for it. Now, I have to agree on Samurai Champloo. It has much of the same team involved, a heavy focus on music, and fun characters you'll fall in love with, but in a historical fiction setting instead of sci fi. I'm so glad you're watching this show. While it wasn't the first anime I ever watched, this was the one that turned me into a lifelong lover of the art form. It is wonderful to get to watch someone else discover and enjoy something you love.

The generally accepted placement for the movie is between episodes 22 and 23 as that narratively puts the crew in the right location and relationship with one another that we see in the movie compared to how they are in the show. But yeah, I agree that the movie works as a stand alone adventure you can view at any point once Ed is on the team since all five of them (Ein included) are finally on the ship. The series alone and followed up by the movie is a fantastic journey complete in and of itself with an encore film giving us one last adventure afterwards, while inserting it into the timeline placement of between Episodes 22 and 23 does kind of gel with the events of the show going on at that point. Either way the film is a must watch. During or after the show's run is entirely up to the viewer and works either way.

Officially the movie takes place between episodes 22 and 23, but it fits perfectly afterwards as a sort of encore, one last adventure with our crew after the show ends. Narratively it takes place between those two episodes but tonally (and visually, given the higher animation budget the movie got over the show) it works watching it afterwards. Genuinely it's up to you when you want to slot it in, it works either way.

One of my favorite endings to an episode of a show!

doohan had to juryrig the columbia to get it to fly because those arent designed to take off by themselves.
