This episode definitely had peak freakiness!

I'm pretty sure the thing from your childhood with the round bodied clown was Unico and the Island of Magic. You perfectly described the terrifying wizard from what was supposed to be a children's film.

BTW, if it has not been mentioned before in the comments Spike's ship Swordfish is a reference to a British WW2 class of aircraft Swordfish, a bi-plane torpedo plane that was famous for jamming the rudder of the German Battleship Bismarck, aiding in it's ultimate sinking, among other crazy things. There are lots of references to vintage earth aircraft throughout the show.

This episode is one of my fav episodes of anything, ever. For once, the title to this doesn't come from anything music-related; It's the title of a French New Wave film by Jean-Luc Goddard, it means "Pierrot the Fool," or "Mad Pierrot". Also the musical piece that plays during the Project flashback is a tribute to "On The Run " by Pink Floyd, from their legendary album The Dark Side of the Moon. And to top it all off, I love that even with how pissy and cynical as she is, Faye came to try to help him.
