That leonine creature should have been a Tharil, since they are already part of the Whoniverse. Maybe, originally, they were meant to be.

Jason

My fav part of this is a throwaway line from 12 when he refers to Leandro's as 'Lenny the Lion'. Lenny the Lion was a hugely popular ventriloquist act that ran on British TV and theatres from the 50's through to the early 80's. I remember Lenny from my childhood. But its when I look at big, strong, fierce scary warrior Leandro and then an image of Lenny, that makes the Doctors line crack me up- https://nostalgiacentral.com/television/tv-by-decade/tv-shows-1950s/lenny-lion-show/ I have always wondered if Capaldi improvised that line or if it was in the original script.

I think it's a really interesting take on immortality, that you live forever but your poor brain still has short term and long term recall and after so many years it has to just rewrite itself to keep functioning so you lose those memories that make up who you are. It's really tragic to live forever, and they did a great job of impressing that weight on us

James Christie

He’s a bit over 2,000 years old. 906 when 10 regenerated. By the time we were at series 7 he was 1,200 years old, then 11 spent over 800 years on Trenzalore

Clare W

i’m such a sucker for the tardis scene at the end, like in other episodes, the moments with the doctor and clara just having a normal-paced conversation, a gentle moment, etc. it’s something that always stuck out to me as such a great emotional touchstone in this era, helps ground the characters

James Christie

I’m not sure if you reacted to/watched the minisodes during 11s era but there were quite a few (especially with river and the trio). If not maybe thats an idea for a little fun bonus reaction at Christmas or something if you so wished 🤷‍♂️

Ronan

Well it’s hard to know for sure. That’s what he says his age is in the modern show, but at some point in classic, 7(?) says he forgot his age and started over. Who knows how old he really is?

Ethan Lewendon

Fun fact given all the immortality talk. Struan Rodger, who plays Clayton the servant in this, voiced the Face of Boe!

MaxValPlatt

Yeah, "Life with Ponds" is a nice seven parter of micro length episodes :) Also a whole bunch of 11th+River minisodes themed around the word "night" - first night, last night etc. They really are something :)

Skyruff Creative

This episode illustrates that The Doctor has the Superman problem. Because he has great power every time something happens he does not prevent, the people who know of him, hold it against him. You have a Time Machine, why didn’t you save my children, etc.

MaxValPlatt

Well, Eighth also kinda done that, wyrn he said that he is around 1100 years old but can't be sure , he personally restarted his age by his incarnation. Also, different incarnations on Classic Who generally say their age almost randomly, because going by this logic, their were like 9 Doctors before 9th (1-8 and War) who lived for 900 years, and then suddenly 11th spent 300 years in-between meetings with Ponds and around 800-900 years on Trenzalore (which would make 11th the most long - lived incarnation ever). Math isn't matching up.

Tristan Reynolds

Fun fact! Peter wasn't the only person in the fires of pompeii episode that came back as a different character. Karen Gillan played one of the priestesses. :D

Jbb

11 said he is always lying about his age. And is it Earth years or gallifreyan?

Chris Padwick

The Doctor's age - does he count his age in Earth years or Gallifrey years? The fifth Doctor once said 'Never ask a Timelord's age as 'they only lie to you'.

James Hoffmann

It is actually pretty realistic imo. The human brain has limited memory capacity. It would be physically incapable of remembering stuff over hundreds or thousands of years. Heck, most humans start forgetting stuff after a few decades. But the concept is interesting that you might live thousands of years but the last few decades would be the only "life" you actually know and remember.

Clarine

That first half of the season is the easy part imo 😅. We enter the emotion rollcoaster part. I am looking forward to many Doctor speeches ❤️‍🔥

Mark Ten

The Doctors age is one of those things you just accept or reject. We know the First Doctor was 300 when he & Susan left Galifrey, so him being 900 or 700 or 1200 now really doesnt make sense. Its just one of those things written for convenience When Madame Vastra describes him being there at the birth & death of the universe its implied that he lived eons, not just a visitor... and since the 8th Doctor's adventures became canon when he said farewell to his audio companions (Night of the Doctor) ... and 8 lived thousands of years... Welp, I try to accept whatever age he says he is. Who am I to argue?

William Huebler

Ashildr didnt want to see Lion man was deceiving her I suspect.

William Huebler

When 12 is talking about her wearing a "mask" - Im forcibly reminded of Madam Vastra telling Clara in 12s first story - "The young man fell away, the mask came off ..." Perhaps, Its not just 12 is the doctor without the mask, its he's the one who wants to take the mask off?

matt

I saw that reaction to Captain Jack. When are you going to start Torchwood?

MaxValPlatt

I'm all for watching Torchwood! )

Robert A.

Never thought of this before -- this could've been the Tharils earlier in their history. Now I gotta read Warrior's Gate again (the novelization is better than the televised episodes IMHO)

Robert A.

Watching your reaction to this, I've thought of a bunch of questions that...I can't ask here. Yet. Off to Reddit!

Josef Schiltz

Before they became the enslaved time sensitives. Yes. Warrior's Gate could be their future.

Josef Schiltz

Now, thing is, have you seen this early appearance of Tom Baker from 1968? 'Tom Baker Brief Appearance in George & Dragon 'The 10:15 Train' 1968'

Matthew Hunter

@everyone - can we try really hard to avoid any spoilers. Thanks

John

12 said he was over 2000 years old in "Deep Breath." But always remember Rule 1.

Justin Harris

Literally why I subbed. I couldn’t wait to see Angela see these speeches.
