Angela, when you mentioned the people Vision killed in the hospital, you seemed to have forgotten all the mercenaries Vision killed in Fiona's pub. Javis even said "the old you would have responded with measure" to which Vision replies "let try something new".

You asked about who's behind this series. That would be Terry Matalas, whom I mentioned in a comment in the first full length episode post. One thing I learned about him from his work on "Picard" season 3, is that he's not afraid to pull random and obscure references from franchise history and make them part of the story. So the mysterious figures in this series could really be anyone from the MCU or even the greater Marvel Universe we haven't yet met. Theories on who hired Paladin: ~Wanda - I very much doubt this one. I feel like if it was her trying to find Vision, she'd have much different and more "witchy" ways of doing so. ~Agatha - Same as Wanda, very unlikely IMO. ~Billy - This is more likely and would fit with fairly typical Marvel story formulae. As far as financing the hire, there are plenty of "witchy" ways Billy could get the money. And the voice, while modulated, did seem to be higher pitched, indicating either a woman or a younger man. Meanwhile, the figure in the painting, whom the AI's referred to as "The First of Us": ~The Human Torch - I hesitate even mentioning this one. It's a suggestion I saw online and frankly I think it's rather silly. For one thing, nothing I know of Johnny Storm suggests he's capable of hacking a hacker. ~Mephisto - I think this is one of the more likely ideas, though if so it might drastically change his nature and origin from the comics. But he's been mentioned and theorized about in connection to Wanda since the first episodes of WandaVision aired. But it isn't just the painting that is a clue: When Tommy described Vision said he looked like a demon, which might also foreshadow Mephisto. Why he would be "the first of us" for the AI's, though, I don't know. ~Dr. Zola - This is my personal favorite theory. Dr. Zola, the Red Skull's scientist in the first Cap Am film, appeared later in The Winter Soldier in the form of his consciousness uploaded to a giant computer, which would make him the first AI. The fire he's standing in would be from when the laboratory/bunker was blown up, and "somehow he survived". He also could end up being behind the hiring of Paladin. The only part that doesn't fit is why Vision and Jarvis would speak so reverently of him. But then, Vision is pretty reverent with Ultron even knowing how evil he is.

I think it's interesting that Ultron said "Wouldn't have been my first choice" and "He was a good guy" when JARVIS sacrificed himself. It's exactly what Ultron said the first time he killed JARVIS.

I really like your comment. I'd like to add something though, about Human Torch - you mentioned Johnny Storm, but he isn't the first Torch in Marvel universe. If Terry Matalas really likes to go for obscure references, he could use the very first Human Torch (who has a distinction of sharing spotlight of first Marvel super person with Namor). That "Human" Torch was an Android who was created in the very beginning of 20th century, and ad an Android, I think that this theory about it being that very first Human Torch shouldn't be discounted. After all, while first Torch is definitely a very niche superhero who's spotlight in comic books is far gone, thematically he as an adroid might be introduced in this show about synthezoids :)

And Jim Hammond (first Torch's alter ego name) is the first of synthezoids in Marvel comic books. So, the only reason why we shouldn't consider him is that he kinda non-relevant since 1950's and only hardcore nerds remember him :) although, I, personally, come to know him through magnificent Alex Ross's mini-séries "Marvels" from 1994 :)
