Oh, what timing! I had only just signed in to my email account when this notification appeared.

Seeing Michael O'Hare in this so happy breaks me. In Season 1 he rapidly developed paranoid delusions, psychosis and even hallucinations, they offered to pause to stop filming but O'Hare feared that would kill the show in its first season so he insited they push through so Warner Bros the Straczynski and him agreed to a managed treatment plan. Straczynski promised to take the infos to his grave but O'Hare said to only take it to HIS grave and after his death to explain it to the fans of babylon 5 (which was 2012) it was quoted that O'Hare was literally "Holding on by his fingernails". Babylon 5 Creator J. Michael Straczynski rly handed the whole thing with grace.

kris

just think... you have more processing power on your phone now than they had when making the cg of this series

Cody Thomas Sinclair

The fact that this show was done on a fraction of the budget Star Trek was playing around with at the time, I can only imagine what they could have done with The Next Generation's budget.

John Miller

I'll be honest, when I think of Walter Koenig now, I think of him as Bester. What an amazing character.

Over50Gamer

Hugs and backpats... yeah, hearing Walter's voice and seeing him hosting hit me too. 🥲

I've been a fan of B5 for almost 30 years, and I only last week found out that Peter pronounces his last name JUR-a-sic, emphasis on the first syllable. JMS told the story that when Walter Koenig first sat down to eat lunch with the B5 cast, Michael O'Hare stood up and got everyone else to stand up. When Walter asked why, Michael said "in the military, everyone stands in the presence of a superior officer."

Stephen Collette

The CGI that they used was truly cutting edge. They made up some things on the fly and those approaches are still being used today. You will notice that the CGI continues to get better each season. They got a little more money, the technology got better, and they kept taking more chances that worked out. If you pay attention, you will see actual images taken by the Hubble telescope used as the background for space shots.

Mark Ten

I first became aware of Peter Jurasik as Sid the Snitch on Hill Street Blues, a character he described as one of his collection of fruits & nuts he portrayed in the 80's & 90's. Sid will never convince anyone he is a high born alien ambassador, I thought. Oh boy!

Simon Healey

always remember a ep of a certain star trek series ruling out cgi of course that didn't last long !

Paul Hess

I enjoyed enjoying this with you! Various hidden tidbits "I never caught that before" <- this is one of the many reasons Babylon 5 is amazing the second, third, and Nth time!!!!

Angela, if you aren't familiar with Dorothy Fontana, she was the script editor for Star Trek TOS. She took the role very seriously, and she was the one that made sure there was consistency on the show with the way technology worked and the Federation operated. Basically, she is the reason Star Trek was more than just a show, but a consistent universe that made sense. Without that consistency, Star Trek never would have expanded in the way it did. I consider her one of the most important figures in science-fiction history, and it was great that JMS brought her on to work on Babylon 5. Babylon 5 often gets framed as the anti-Star Trek, and people like to play up the rivalry between the shows, but JMS showed a great deal of respect for Star Trek in the people he brought on board.

What timing, watching this right after Walter's passing....

Fr. Brench

Cool, I never saw this BTS video before. Thanks for sharing it with us!

dean worrall

Angela said she was watching episode 1 of the next season right after watching these, assuming that was a few days or more ago due to editing, there are no spoilers that Angela isn't already ahead of..

James Fleischman

Wow that is a gut punch seeing Walter talking straight to us. And especially with the news of Sir Patrick as well. This has been a heavy week for B5 and Star Trek fandom.

dean worrall

Peter Jurasic was in Tron too... just a little interesting tidbit you might be interested in later..

Crismac

Huge fan of Christopher Franke, a big part of Babylon 5's success.

funnylilgalreacts

Everyone should stick to the rule " Only post comments on the episode we just watched" There are people experiencing this show for the first time with us.

Tom Smith

Probably more than the supercomputer they assembled the episodes on. I said it on the other episode, but they used Amigas for the CGI, it was crazy.

I heard a story of the origins of the Centauri hair. I'm not sure how accurate it is, but here goes: -JMS asks for the Centauri to have "big" hair, probably thinking like 17th century European aristocrat wigs or something. -Peter Jurasik decides to prank him by asking the makeup crew to make it ludicrously big and silly-looking, like a giant sideways crest of hair. -Peter then goes to find JMS to show him the hair thinking he'll just laugh about it and ask them to tone it down. -JMS is in a hurry, glances at it quickly and goes: "Yeah yeah, that looks fine, let's go with that" and runs off. -Cue Peter Jurasik and all the other Centauri cast members throughout the series, stuck with that ridiculous hair

David Boyd

Walter's death is obviously the most recent. It's a bummer how many of the cast we've lost over the years. If you get a chance make sure you check out what JMS had to say about Walter after his passing.

Ryan Fisher

This is why we can’t have nice things. Even if Angela watched others might be experiencing it live with her. Don’t post about things beyond the video.

Josef Schiltz

A mention as to one of B5's writers who is mentioned, David Gerrold. He created the Tribbles!

John

It's difficult to describe just how groundbreaking and amazing the CGI effects were for the time. Sure, some of it looks dated today, 30 years later, but for the 1990's, nobody had done it yet.

Brian Pickering

"This would have been crazy in 1994." Yeah, I knew that I loved the bits I saw, my biggest problem then was 1) the network kept on moving the schedule around, combined with 2) my teaching schedule changing every semester. I didn't get to see the full series until it went into syndication.

Josef Schiltz

As with the insectoid character in B5, the Sea Devils, in Classic Who, also wore the head of the creature as a hat and saw through little peep holes in the Sea Devil costumes' neck.

Wild_Lee_Coyote

Babylon 5 didn’t have a traditional sound stage. They had an old hot tub manufacturing building. It was hot and it stank of old chemicals. It was also off the normal studio lots so the whole production became a tight knit group. I think it added to the feeling of a Station all alone in the night.

Dresden Valareo

I imagine the reason you don't see Peter (Londo) and Andareas (G'Kar) without makeup is there would litterally be no time to. Prosthetics like what they wore would take hours to put on then take off them. I believe Andraeus said he would show up for makeup at 3-4am and wouldn't be our of makeup to go home till 11pm-12am Sleep is a illusion for that kind of work lol. The actresses for Na'Toph doesn't have as many scenes or even in every episode (lots of times, the actress was there just as a background extra too)

Drake

in what world is it a spoiler to talk about what happened during season 1 after she finished season 1 ? i did not mention anything beyond you project your own knowledge into this. and his death is years after babylon 5 long finished
