So, Michael O'Hare leaving was a surprise to everyone except him and Joe Michael Strazynski. He was ill and had spoken to JMS and asked him to keep the details secret until after he died, which he has since. After his death, JMS revealed that Michael O'Hare was schizophrenic and was experiencing psychosis and hallucinations brought on, at least in part, by the stress of being the lead in a 22 episode show. JMS offered to delay the second season to give him time to get treatment but Michael declined, not wanting to put other people's jobs at risk in case the delay got the show cancelled. So they wrote him out between seasons and recruited Bruce Boxlietner to replace him as the commander of the station.

Am expecting a solid 5 minute rant from Angela about Jeff *peeks*

Texas Anla'Shok

Oh, I've been waiting for this! As in love with Sinclair as you were I could not wait to see your reaction to Sheridan.

Buck Rogers

When I start a rewatch I always find Michael O'Hare to be very stiff, almost off-putting, but I miss him towards the end of the season. I have never seen anyone take to Sinclair so fast and so deeply as Angela did. My own end of the season feeling started immediately this time.

Moricant

The Agamemnon is an Omega class destroyer, the heaviest type of capital ship in the Earth Alliance fleet. It features rotating sections to provide gravity and is heavily inspired by the Russian ship from 2010.

MaxValPlatt

Yeah, Sinclair was a good character. And kudos to O'Hare who managed to pull it off while suffering from hallucinations, I suppose that shooting a fantasy show with multiple practical effects while also being prone to slips in perceived reality would be tough. Everyone around might be either a real person in makeup or a hallucination from your brain.

Mara

A man experiencing strong, frequent paranoid delusions and psychosis playing a person who was suffering from missing time and 'a hole in the mind' is not a healthy mix, poor guy.

Chris Bruneau

Angela, I know you are upset about Sinclair, but here is the sad truth. After Season 1, Michael O'Hare left the regular cast voluntarily. Straczynski later disclosed he told him privately he was suffering from mental illness and couldn't continue on. There are a lot of real life tragedies around this show; much of the main cast have passed on; many of whom died pretty young. those gone include: Michael O'Hare, Jerry Doyle, Mira Furlan, Richard Biggs, Stephen Furst, and Andrew Katsulas.

Mark Ten

Angela's intro, she knew everything was going to be fine... Oh boy!

Dylan Humphries

Babylon 5 did so many things for the first time, and so well, that it's always easy to overlook some of them. One thing in particular that it handles very well is the impact of real life events on it's cast. These days you have these long-running franchises that demand long-term contracts but at the time the idea that you would be telling a single contiguous story for five years on television was basically unheard of and it was not accounted for in a business sense. The way the writing manages to accommodate various necessary absences, temporary and permanent, is really one of the lesser appreciated aspects of the craft here. The whole story about Michael O'Hare at this point is his life is truly heart-breaking and the fact that he was able to do what he was able to do under those conditions is a testament to his commitment and determination.

starting my morning with this. love the recap, where your head is at, and all the thoughts. SO looking forward to the first couple minutes of the reaction. (sorry, seeing someone else go though that suprise/pain is cathartic even after all these years) couple of fun things: (no spoilers, I promise) - Remember the 'Soul Hunter' episode? Now you know why that was such a big deal to Delenn. - Episode 'And a Sky Full of Stars' was a very challenging episode for Michael O'Hare. He has scenes where there are people appeared and disappeared in his mind. He was having paranoid delusions that were progressively getting worse. Tragic to think about. - Captain Sheridan (Bruce Boxleitner) was a huge get for the show. He was well known for Scarecrow & Mrs King, as well as the movie Tron. - Don't forget anything from season one.....hehehe Soooooo much will come back throughout the series. - There are so many rules! This is only because of technology now. When this came out, we had to make sure we were home in front of the TV at the right time. Miss an episode and you missed it. Reruns that first year were not very common. I started taping episodes on my VCR (I'm old) about halfway though because I wanted to see them again to make sure I caught everything. And the wait between seasons?!?! don't get us started. :P

Moricant

Sorry, thought that was sufficiently vague to be classed as simple reassurance rather than indicating anything specific would happen. Will delete.

stephen Hopkinson

He had schizophrenia from it was not until the actor went beyond the vail we found out, if you see a beauitiful mind with russel crew you may get idea what it feel like

Cei Stockport

The 'Alexi Leanov'. The Omega Class is the most powerful ship in Earth Force....and would have lasted about 15 seconds against a Minbari cruiser.

Imzadi

Same for Sinclair. I liked him later but he was never a favorite. I was always predisposed to like Sheridan as I grew up watching Scarecrow & Mrs. King and of course Tron. But I never really missed Sinclair and preferred Sheridan.

Freja Corbinne

@Cei that's a person's name. Spell it right. Alexei Leonov.

Freja Corbinne

@stephen wtf is it with people spelling names horrendously here? Russell Crowe. jfc

bloodyshadow1

you know, she took to john better than I thoguht she would. normally reactos hate him until the second episode when they're told why the switch happened. Good on her

Rime Pendragon

Why do people feel the need to write comments that spoil stuff ?

DC42

Dammit, I have a meeting that I can't get out of, and it cannot be over soon enough!!

DC42

I've come to appreciate Sinclair much more over the years, but I still say that Sheridan was so much better for the show!

DC42

His stiffness was almost certainly due to his condition; a common symptom of psychotic disorders is what they call "restricted, blunted, or flat affect," i.e. a reduced ability to express emotions effectively. It's so freaking tragic and heartbreaking; O'Hare sounded like such a wonderful person!

Literaltruth

There is nothing spoiled here. She's watched the episodes, had them edited and posted them. There is nothing in my comment or any replies that spoils anything that she hasn't already seen.

Kieran Elliott

I enjoyed Sinclair way more on rewatch than I did at the time, but Sheridan remains top in my heart.

DC42

She really needs to see 2001 & 2010!

Garrick Smalley

Not a spoiler Yes she will grow wings. Snicker

Paul Hess

I'm looking forward to your reaction to this. I've been an enthusiastic fan right from the original broadcast days, and was especially invested in the deep and atypical "captain" portrayal of Sinclair as the lead. I recall vividly resenting JMS at this point for my belief that he was giving in to stereotypes and ratings grabs, even while still loving every moment of the show.

Paul Hess

p.s. I was deliberately avoiding spoiling the larger context which none of us knew at the time this happened, but I see lots of people have explained it in other comments .... I eventually changed my mind about JMS for lots of reasons even before learning these other factors about O'Hare

Moricant

I edited the comment to delete the sentence in question.

Enskipp

By the end of Babylon 5, Walter Keonig “will always be Bester” to you

Garrick Smalley

The possible spoiler in the opening credits is not there.

Chris Biebel

One thing about the change is that we go from having Sinclair having a prior connection with Garibaldi to having Sheridan having a prior connection with Ivanova. At the time this was filming, Bruce Boxleitner was married to Melissa Gilbert. He used to play a spy on the TV show "Scarecrow and Mrs. King" starring opposite former Charlies Angel star Kate Jackson (who played a single mom who got caught up in the spy game).

DC42

What spoilers?

D Scott Howard

Discussing the "Soul Situation" in the middle of C & C didn't seem like the best way to protect the secret! Typical humans. LOL!

John O'Meara

Bruce Boxleitner is NOT from Tron. He IS Tron.

Michael Kemmet

I just realized two things after 30 years of watching B5. First, the beginning of Sheridan's speech referencing the Dalai Lama(perhaps the most famous current example of supposed reincarnation of a specific soul) was specifically there to get the audience prepped for the revelation later in the episode of Minbari souls being reincarnated into human bodies. Second(and I may have noticed this before and forgot it), the collars on the Earth Force uniforms button opposite ways depending on male/female. I guess that's because current male/female shirts button opposite and the costuming department decided to keep that tradition going for the 2200s. I wonder if current military uniforms also do that, or if they all fasten the same way regardless of gender?

bakamitai

Everyone I've talked to about it was shocked when Sinclair was reassigned. And everyone had reservations about Sheridan. You're not alone. But the Babylon 5 universe is vast, and there are only so many minutes per episode to tell its story. Please be patient.

John

All I will say about Sinclair's departure is this: Trust in JMS.

John

Sheriden destroyed the "Black Star." That's why they call him "Star Killer." About Jeff and Dukat's soul - we now have learned enough to know that Dukat and Sinclair were alive at the same time. Dukat's death started the war.

John

Discussing the manner of O'Hare's departure can change expectations for future episodes.

John

The spoiler that people are freaking out about in the early Season 2 intros does not exist in the Amazon Prime videos. There was one in a DVD release, but it's fixed on Prime.

TheUndeadFish

Bruce Boxleitner indeed had a prominent role in the original TRON movie. But as an additional fun fact, Peter Jurasik (Londo Mollari) had a small role in that movie too (as the program that gets deleted during the bouncing ball game).

Roy Graham

Not all change is an evil. Not all goodbyes are farewell. We all feel the same about Koenig. You're with your people. Be comforted by the knowledge that you haven't yet seen his best work. Fun fact about Clark's swearing in scene in the previous episode, the framing is nearly identical to the famous real world photo of LBJ's swearing in following Kennedy's assassination. The soap opera comment is funny because most sci fi actors from this era came from soap operas.

Tranquil_Gnome

Yea! Season 2. Just wait and see. And you got answers! Or some at least. Let's got episode 2!

DC42

And they're such whiny little bitches about it a decade later.

James Fleischman

Ivanova: I can only conclude that I'm paying off karma at a vastly accelerated rate.

Aaron Wright

I can say they are different in the Australian military if the female wants the female style. They can choose male shirts however if they desire.

Aaron Wright

I really like the change of command. Real world reasons aside, too many shows like Next generation have officers fixed in rank and position for 5-7 years, talk about a stagnant career. In the military senior officers are only in command of a particular posting or ship for 3-4 years max before being moved on. Other people need to get experience at those postings and you dont want people to become too familiar in one area for corruption purposes.

Aaron Wright

It was announced that he'd left the show at the time B5 was airing this season (even before.) Knowing he's no longer on the shows payroll is the exact same experience as in the 90s when i watched it air live.

Rob Thomas

so.. it really begins.

Geoff Richards

From the last episode of S1, Sinclair: "Nothing's the same anymore."
