Hello, everyone!
Batcat Update
We are extremely close to a final render on Batcat! I didn't quite manage to get it all ready this past week - I had some pretty bad insomnia strike me over the past few days, and my efforts to rectify it slightly bungled the work schedule. I don't trust myself to do any finalizing work on 30+ hours without sleep, and there are good reasons for that.
I expect to have all of the jittering done by Wednesday, though. I also didn't realize that I apparently didn't complete the expression animation pass, so I will need to do a once-over on that too. It isn't too difficult or time-consuming - it's mostly just throwing in eye blinks, and general facial expression shapes. Similarly, I need to quick throw in some final hand poses for the idle animations, which is just a quick curl. All of that shouldn't take more more than day to do, two absolute tops.
Then there is some hair clipping I need to fix in spots (like in this week's preview image). All in all, I expect to have it all ready to render by Friday at the absolute latest, and Wednesday at the earliest. I think I've got the insomnia under control, so we shouldn't have any more issues pop up from me reenacting Henry Cavill's Geralt in the Netflix Witcher adaptation of The Last Wish.
And rather serendipitously, the sound designer I brought on for the project, PornSFX, sent in the final mix of the sound design just last night. All of the stars are aligning for a prompt post-production schedule. The only major hurdle left to do is for me to finally just cough up the 20 bucks to buy Gas Station Simulator, so I can capture some footage for Selina to be playing. I've already gone through and set up all the screens for planar tracking in Resolve, complete with neutral blank screens to draw over, and high-contrast markers for the tracker to... well, track. I also put together what few other UX elements are necessary, such as Selina's phone when Barbara calls her at the end of the video.
And yes, Innie explicitly name-dropped Gas Station Simulator in her manuscript, so I will be buying and playing Gas Station Simulator. Do you think I could write it off as a business expense?
Demonseed - A Micro Series
With all of that in mind, I am very excited to share with you the unplanned fruits of the aforementioned insomnia. As much as I hate the experience, I can't deny the fact that my creativity absolutely thrives when I am sleep-deprived. Enter Demonseed, a 36(!)-episode Micro series.
And to be clear, by "Micro series", I mean "a series of Micro videos." There is nothing Micro about a 36-episode saga, split across four acts.
And then for further elaboration, this is going by the justified definition of "Micro video" that I established last week - videos that are quick for me to make, not necessarily videos that are short. A perfect example of this is I have drafted together the first two episodes of Demonseed - the first episode is 50 seconds long, and the second is 3 minutes long. Both of them took me about 4 hours to build. Just by the nature of them, the second one came together much faster.
I suppose that example kinda gave away the big reveal, didn't it? Yes, I have already assembled two episodes of this series - I plan to assemble another two, before I start shopping it around to get voices. I already have specific voice actresses in mind for each of the characters, but I haven't talked to them about it yet. As is par the course for me, I won't drop names until I have them hard-confirmed and on-board.
You can watch both drafts right here, right now! Just click below to stream them!
Keep in mind that these are early drafts - importantly, there is no voicing (as mentioned earlier), minimal lighting (only lighting effects important to pacing), and no scenebuild yet. This is all minimum viable product.
As you can probably tell from the second episode, there is a plot to all of this, and the characters have a surprising amount of depth and backstory to them for being hallucinated amidst a sleep-deprived stupor.
Very briefly, Galwyn is an amateur witch who had the bright idea that, instead of learning magic the normal way, she'll just cheat her way to the top by stealing a devil's power. The catch is that, in order to do so, she has to get pregnant with a devil's child. Her plans to seduce a devil almost immediately go awry when she inadvertently summons a devil queen, Nal-Azoth. And while devil queens are just as capable of impregnating mortals as male devils, they are notorious for sadistically toying with their mates. What follows is the utter and complete humiliation, subjugation, and domination of a witch whose equal parts foolish and stubborn. She could break the pact at any time, cast the she-devil back to her infernal realm - but she is determined to gain power, no matter the cost.
I should note that when I say it's a 36-episode series, that is a very tentative number. I have 36 episodes currently written out, but it is very likely that it will end up growing beyond that. Once I started translating my sleep-deprived writings into well-rested animation, I immediately began expanding out the ideas I had written. What was written as two episodes has since split into four - which is why I am drafting 4 episodes rather than my original goal of 2. And the reason for that is that it is the original second episode where things start getting extreme, with Nal-Azoth literally skullfucking Galwyn unconscious, and then slapping her back awake. I want to use that as sort of my litmus test for the voice talent, make sure they're okay with that kind of content, since it's notably more extreme than most of the work I've done thus far. And since that original second episode is now episode 4....
Once everything is greenlit and voices are brought on board, I am aiming for a release schedule of an episode every 3 or 4 weeks. And that is including the 4 made episodes, even though they will all be finished in tandum, just to set expectations. I might release the first 2 episodes closer together to one another, just because the first episode is a real tease and doesn't really do anything. I haven't decided on that yet.
I want to explore other Micros in between releases of these episodes, since I have a whole slew of them written out, and a fair few drafted and ready for voicing of their own. And then of course, all of this Micro work is alongside the existing Short/Long production schedule.
I will probably have the next two episodes drafted out by next week's Progress Report. I say probably, because my plans for the story have shifted around a lot since the first sleep-deprived draft. As a quick example, Galwyn's sister, Veryna, was originally slated to make her first appearance on Episode 19 - she now makes her first appearance in Episode 2. As such, when I put these characters together in that sleep-deprived binge, I focused on Nal-Azoth and Galwyn. Veryna is assembled, but she has unpolished rigging and no faceposing, and isn't ready to be put into Source yet. And importantly, none of them have clothes yet - a big reason why I was able to get them into production so quickly. But with the changes to the story, I now need both Galwyn and Veryna fully clothed for the narrative flashback in Episode 2.
I, for one, am super excited for this project. It is the culmination of literal years worth of ideas and general frustration, ideas that I had but no characters they could apply to. I've wanted to make a rough-and-tumble please-step-on-me futa-dommy-mommy project, with strong psychological-sexual domination/submission & slave/master themes, for a really long time now. I've flirted with it in various forms over the years, with Refuge and To Breed & Bond skirting around the edges, but not even those projects were able to go full-tilt into what I wanted to do.
So to finally have the perfect project to fully explore those ideas in is really liberating. As much fun as act 1 is going to be, as just these two episodes so far hint at, the later acts are going to really be a roller-coaster. And I won't lie, I'm just really excited to get to the ending of it all, because 😙🤌 is it powerful and impactful. At least, in my mind's eye it is.
Conclusion
At any rate, that's all for now! In summary: I know I've said it a few times now, but I think Batcat will finally get rendered out this week! The sound design is done and ready to drop in! And I've got a fun and exciting new Micro project in the shop!
Until next week, everyone!
