I don’t believe that Damon would let Bonnie die, he does care for Elena happiness too, and the scene on the dance floor between Bonnie and Damon proves that he cares for Bonnie too, at list he admire her. His statement to Elena “I will always choose you” it is a declaration of complete devotion. He will do everything to prevent anybody get hurt, as he did this time, but if he will not let Elena to die soul circumstance get to have no choices. He is very honest about the reality of facts, doesn't beat around the bush he is up front about the truth that if the situation demanded him to choose between Bonnie and Elena without any other option then he would let Bonnie go. And it’s natural he doesn’t have any attachment to Bonnie as he has to Elena and it's Bonnie choice to use her power to do what needs to be done. That doesn’t mean that he doesn’t care for the people around him like Jeremy too and it's not because of Elena. He has this facade of bad ass person, though and rough but we saw that hiden inside his has tis side that is very tender and caring, he just doesn't like anybody to know, as Bonnie doesn't want anybody to know that her power comes with a price, because it's a weakness and people could hurt her, same think for Damon. This episode establishes very effectivelly the great difference between the brothers. Stefan seems to be the one that respect Elena’s choices, and Damon is the jerk that doesn’t care about Elena’s wishes, but is that so? It would be difficult to respect her wishes if she is dead, and she has no fear of losing her life if that means to protect the people she loves. That is because she is a very loving person but at the same time she suffer from survivor guilt, which make her a bit of a death seeker. Damon knows about it and Stefan too, since her knowledge, told by him, of her father being alive in the car and wanting for him to save her first, and died because of that, triggered it. There is the measure of the impact of their love and devotion for Elena and what motivate the brothers and their dynamic. Stefan is a “yes” man, he doesn’t fight Elena, he doesn’t do the dirty work, he could never let people ate him for doing what is necessary to do, he lets Damon doing it. Stefan primary instinct is to preserve his reputation as a good person, and that priority is a danger to the people he loves because it makes him week, incapable to what is necessary worrying too much about collateral damage and the impact of what people would think about him with his conduct; that is what guide Stefan’s actions, he cares what people think about him, first and foremost. Damon on the other side doesn’t care what people think of him, he has no hesitation in doing what is necessary to do, even at the cost of being hated. He is very clever and can think on his feet, he learnt to masterfully use his dark side to get things done at everybody’s advantage and safety, including preserving his brother’s precious reputation by taking all the heat for everything, but people can blame him because thanks to him figuring things out, they are all alive and Stefan can play the hero part, while Damon does all the work. and that impact also certain auience that put Damon in the bad person list, looking at reputations, at words said, at other character judgements, rather than facts, substance, and all good the deeds he does all the time and never brags about them. But this time the plan was so obviously smart and effective that he stole the hero spot and Stefan did not like it, one bit.

I love how Elena glances at Damon’s bed for a second before she leaves his bedroom. You cannot tell me she doesn’t feel attracted to him.
