I feel like I'm missing something, since I don't know what he's talking about. Not sure if something was mentioned earlier or if it is yet to be revealed. Guess I'll have to reread this part of the story and/or wait and see, lol.

France has been at war for the past year with the Dutch. Hughyes is Dutch and so I would assume feels pretty conflicted about living in the country attacking his people. If I'm not mistaken the French didn't win that war.
