Character Portraits - Kaylan (Patreon)
Content
Ms. Kaylan. Such a cutie. Consistently one of the most popular characters in To Be A King, Kaylan was the first character I wrote the character description for (besides the MC). She was also either the first or second character model I ever created for TBaK (Cassia may have been first).
Unlike many of our leading ladies in To Be A King, Kaylan has plenty of real world experience. She is also not royalty or wealthy. For some unknown reason, her father never became wealthy or exploited his fame as an outstanding general. In fact, she grew up modestly in the mountains with her mother (who passed away some years later). Kaylan is also one of our few previously married love interests.
Spunky is how I would describe Kaylan. She seems meek and calm most of the time. But oh boy, I do not recommend making her angry. Who knows if she ever picked up any fighting tips from her father. Oh, and don't make any short jokes. You'll get to see this spunkiness very soon. She is forced to use it a bit, depending on your path.
Loyalty is one of Kaylan's strong suits. She sees safety and familiarity in our MC, and she is all ready for that. After the death of her first husband, Kaylan has wanted some security in her life. If you remember ALL the way back to Chapter 1, Kaylan is the first one we had the opportunity to romance (Valentina objects strongly to this story direction). She also values loyalty in others, and her friends know her to be someone who will stick by them. With her biological clock ticking, she also desperately wants children. Will she be the first LI to give them to you? Only Goddess Anna knows for certain.
Kaylan's tolerance for bullshit is modeled after my own: extremely minimal. Curiously, she alternates between clamming up and not speaking, even if she has a problem with something, or loudly voicing her opinion. She is especially open, as are many people, when she drinks. Have you seen Kaylan drink yet? Oh, you haven't? Well, Kaylan does not hold her wine very well, so maybe that happens at some point. We already know Valentina can't be trusted with wine (though she did over indulge that night). Bottom line: Kaylan should be kept away from Princess Aelinia at parties. If Aelinia thinks everyone has her tolerance for wine, we are in for trouble. Though I get the sense that Aelinia doesn't really want to share her wine - ever.
Kaylan's bullshit detector is also excellent, and I'd say it is better than even the MC's. She can quickly read people, and she goes with her gut. If Kaylan tells you that someone is suspicious, it is best to listen to her. If you aren't feeling the love for Kaylan and have avoided her path, fear not. There are at least two other characters in the game who have similarly good judgment in evaluating people.
If you've learned anything about Kaylan, it is that she is well endowed. If you've learned two things about her, it is that she hates the heat. She wants to freeze in her mountain home. Caudium's capital (also called Caudium because ancient civilizations were confusing) is not known for its mild climate. It is hot and miserable in the summer. The lake by the city helps, but not a whole lot. What the future has in store, I cannot say. However, Kaylan is going to prefer going somewhere much cooler. Maybe there is some land to the north where someone else is from that is known for its cold climate?
Did you ever wonder if Kaylan has any friends? She has mentioned that there are not a lot of people she knows in the city, but she does have friends. You will get to meet one or two within a couple of chapters. One of them is going to very much surprise you, as she just doesn't seem like the type of person Kaylan would hang out with (and no, it is not a character you have met or even seen in the game).
To close out our portrait of the ever popular Kaylan, let me inform you that Kaylan expects mutual support in her romantic relationships. She gives a lot to you, and she will want the same in return. Especially if she ever has problems in her own life or other relationships. Oh, and do not even think of leaving her behind, if you go on some journey. Her first husband died on military campagin, and she will never make the mistake of letting someone so close to her be away for very long.
