In the end, it was decided that Kuroka would share a room with Lucia for the time being. After all, it was impossible to let her roam the house without something to keep her on track. No matter how sad her story was, they had yet to reach this level of trust.

"Basara-sama, I believe it's time we work on expanding the house with space magic."

Expanding and changing the interior of a house was no problem for devils who had a certain grasp over space magic.

This was something that could be done pretty fast even if one was careful. In fact, there were many companies that specialized in such things under the control of the Gremory house.

Lucia had always wanted to change this house. After all, this was no house for a noble devil such as Basara.

She couldn't understand why Jin and Sapphire, despite all their wealth had chosen to live in such a simple way.

Was it perhaps because of the humble Japanese spirit of not showing off too much?

Lucia didn't know and she wasn't particularly interested in knowing either. After all, she was not interested in living in the same way.

All that mattered was to create a house befitting Basara's status. A king should live in a house worthy of a king and act like a king.

Some said that clothes did not make the man and it was true. A king wearing rags was still a king and a beggar wearing royal clothes was still a beggar. But an in this situation, the beggar would be treated like a king and the king like a beggar.

This was the sad reality.

Hearing the timely proposal of Lucia, Basara's finger taped rhythmically on the table as he thought for a few seconds before nodding in approval.

Like his parents, Basara was not particularly interested in showing off his wealth. He honestly thought that house was not bad as it was now.  Still, he would surely need more places if he was to increase his peerage.

There was no rule that stated that peerage members had to live with their King. But it was more or less a given.

‘This is indeed the perfect occasion to work on that.’

Since currently Kuroka as she had to go erase all trace of her presence in the house she was previously occupying, Lucia and Basara could talk freely,

"So, Basara-sama, far from me the idea to fight you over your orders but, I believe you are putting us in a very dangerous situation."

Lucia was blunt. She believed that the job of a maid was to be as submissive as possible. But submission did not equate with stupidity.

A maid had to follow all orders. But a maid could still give some advice if she thought it was necessary. A

"I do not know nor care to know if Kuroka told us the truth. In fact, from the information I have, the chance that she was truthful is extremely high. But… Excuse me for my bluntness, the reasons behind her actions change absolutely nothing to the current situation"

Lucia continued, "Kuroka is a SS ranked criminal because she committed the crime of murdering her master. Plain and simple. The devil society is unforgiving. Even if her situation was explained, few people would take her side, and not even the Maou can change it.”

The situation in the devil world was pretty complicated. The Maou were not in the strictest sense the ruler of the Devil World.

They were more of a figurehead, a symbol of the power of the new regiment.

The true power was the government composed of the many old elders led by Zekram Bael, the first Bael and the grandfather of Sirzech as well as Rias.

Unlike the ancestor of the Gremory, Runeas Gremory [1] who simply liked sleeping and only woke up every few centuries, Zekram Bael, as a second-generation devil and one of the oldest devils alive had an influence unmatchable in the devil world.

In a way, Zekram could be called the true king of the devil world. [2]

“Basara-sama, as you know, the civil war was a war between the Old Maou faction and the new Maou faction which ended up in our victories. But you see, there is no such thing as eternal allies in the front of interest.

“After the victory, the New Maou faction was divided in two factions, On one side we have the Four Great Satans with Sirzech-sama as the leader, and on the other side we have the Great King Faction with Zekram Bael as the lead.

“While the Satans have great popularity with the new generation, the one with the influence is still the Great King faction.

“When Kuroka committed her crimes and fled, little Koneko was nearly executed under the order of the Great king faction and it was only after much debate that Sirzechs managed to take custody of Koneko.”

Basara frowned before nodding. In a way, it was like how nowadays the royal family in countries like England were more like figureheads while the political decisions were made by the government. A crude analogy but one enough for him to understand the situation.

“So you mean to say that the Great Kings can send people after me without listening to Sirzechs, right?”

“Indeed. Furthermore, it isn’t just them. Kuroka is a subject of interest for the remnants of the old Maou faction as well. They will stop at nothing to get her.”

Basara stayed silent. This was another truth.

Of course, he could confidently say that he did not fear them. But then, what about Asia?

“So, what do you think I should do?”

Lucia shrugged, “I believe that your sense of justice will not accept to leave Kuroka alone.”

This was indeed the case.

“But it’s impossible to accept putting ourselves at risk for a complete stranger. Even though she is Koneko’s sister, this is no reason for us to suffer for her.”

This was why.

“Since you decided to shelter her despite the risks, why stop simply here? Let’s go all in.”

A daring and impish smile floated on her usually expressionless face,

“Let’s add her in your peerage.”

[1]: I believe I already mentioned her but she is canon and was introduced in DX short stories.

[2]: Just a personal rant of mine but I hate Zekram. I believe he was first introduced in Vol 18 during the revelation of the King piece and so on. Ngl, the dude is alright. But what I don’t understand is his power level.

Like we are supposed to believe that this dude with the power of destruction, second-generation devil, first Bael, king of the devil world is only a high-ranked devil? Like bruh. At first, I was like, perhaps they are speaking of his nobility rank? But even that doesn’t really make sense. Anyway in my setting, Zekram will be Maou level. Low Maou, weaker than the current four Maou but still Maou level in terms of power.
