First, look at Skater Yarra! This is more unexpected fanart from Annikath's twitter. ^-^ But aside from that, this post is a good news and bad news sort of situation.

Bad news: The TLS update still isn't out, despite how much effort I've been plowing into it.

Good (?) news: I've decided against splitting the final battle into two updates. When TLS 0.74.0 releases, it will be an extra large update resolving the entire battle - the majority of plot threads, the "end of chapter" card, and even one ending of the game.

There are a number of reasons I've made this decision. One is that I've spent so long focusing both conscious and subconscious attention on this that the idea of setting all that down to go through the release and bugfixing process just sounds exhausting. I want to do it all now, while I'm most excited about it. I'm fairly sure this will be fastest overall.

Another is that I don't think the mid-battle break would have likely benefits (other than supporters getting content sooner). It's not like I would pivot much based on feedback: everything has been leading up to this, so most of what happens in the final battle is locked in.

Whenever I take a long time on an update I always experience some anxiety that I'll hype up players too much, but in this case after so long, I'm not sure another month can really increase hype all that much.

Nevertheless, I ask that you temper your expectations. I'm making the best final update I can, but it's not like it will be a ten hour experience featuring a dozen dungeons and a hundred sex scenes. Now, obviously in a game this long, the final battle shouldn't be just 30 minutes, so it needs to have some heft to it, but there is only so much I can accomplish, even working all out for this long.

In past weeks, when doing fundamental planning, I found myself reflecting on this on a design level. There's a temptation to make this battle insanely long, with dozens of different variables and mind-boggling complexity. But the goal of TLS has never been length or complexity for its own sake; the goal is for everything to feel substantial and consequential. I want the gameplay to feel like the summation of the player's choices, the narrative to fulfill all the promises I've spread across various plot threads, and the two to intertwine meaningfully.

So anyway, the final battle is coming. I can't promise it will be a perfect update, but it will be the right conclusion, so far as I'm capable of creating it.

EDIT: This post has been made public so that more are aware of the announcement.

Skater Yarra is amazing! Now I'm curious what other members would look like in modern dress. Makes sense, I think this is more or less what I was expecting. It's been a while since I've played TLS, so my plan is to start a new playthru anyway when it's "done", so this doesn't bother me as much as someone who is continuing their present save. You've been doing this a long time, so forgive me if I'm telling you what you already know, but: As a programmer who has decided to skip milestone releases for reasons similar to yours ("I'm in the zone, man!") , the one caution I will give is that you're going to need to allocate some additional debugging time. Finding a bug that you created 4 months ago amongst 1,000 changes is much, much more difficult than finding a bug you created 2 months ago amongst 500 changes. So in a release that is twice as large, you'll have twice the bugs (as you'd expect), but you'll also need quite a bit longer to fix many of them (which is less intuitive). So it's great for riding the creative wave, but be prepared for an extra-grueling test/debug/rebuild loop afterwards.

As much as I totally think you are right to be cautious about people's expectations running away with them, but based on your previous posts it also sounds like this update is already objectively big, just with more width (or depth? Not sure how to classify conditional outcomes) than length. This is the capstone, it doesn't need to be the largest section of the game. You should absolutely be proud of what you've built over all this time, and even without seeing it I know you should also be proud of what you're building now.

A possible ending!? I have some predictions on what it could be. 1. The flower festival merchant from chapter 1 reveals himself to be the final boss. If you did not invest in him he declares, "These flowers, ARE FOR YOUR GRAVES" and kills everyone in an instant. 2. Qum takes off her mask and reveals herself to be Ivala the whole time. Ivala takes off her mask and reveals herself to be Qum the whole time. 3. Simon and the party steals the broom from the Unperson HQ in Aram, and beats the shit out of the maid sweeping things up in the Steinford Magic Academy in order to steal her broom. Simon sells the first broom and gets enough money to retire, and attaches the second broom to his penis in order to have the ultimate broom sex with everyone forever. 4. A necromancy ritual from Wynn goes wrong, and Carina's dead men come back to eat everyone's brains. All those who did not save them in Chapter 1 perish. 5. FANCY SEX ENDING. The true ending. 6. The Anak and Hester offer Simon 27 ProN to surrender, unable to resist how that will improve his investment spreadsheet, Simon agrees.

Not splitting it seems to be a sound decision. It may be a bit bold generalization, but from what I've seen from fans and patrons, everyone seems to be highly understanding, rather than suffering from waiting. The game has been in development for a long time and everyone is excited, but the game has also taught us the sexyness of delayed gratification. My expectations mostly rely on good characterization and dialogue, which leaves me pretty confident this will maintain the quality. As always, good luck!

Captain Hair

2 endings you mean. Unless you're already counting dying and getting a game over screen. 😆

Succubus flexibility leads me to think that Skater Yarra would be very good at slalom tricks. She just needs to lose the heel brake and we'll have her doing Eagle Cross in no time.

This is already going to be a tricky one just because of how many different factors get involved and how many variants there are. >_< But I am committed to getting this all polished, so I just won't promise a public release until it's ready. I will feel significantly less pressure after I've made good on all these promises.

sierralee

Right now in the middle of everything, it's hard to judge how long or complex it will feel to players, honestly. But it's meant to be the conclusion of everything, so there's a lot to include.

sierralee

All 100% accurate predictions! Somehow you've guessed six of the nine endings.

sierralee

I'm not counting that, actually. The final battle will have several non-combat game overs and I'm not counting those either. I mean the first thing in the game that is a true conclusion/resolution, albeit not the one everyone will be aiming for.

7. The true hero of the game is revealed to be Notice Board Guy. After doing a 100% completion run of every "quest" in the game, he unlocks the legendary Broom-Calibur and SWEEPS aside Hester, Xerxes, and Simon with his 1337 skillz. He then sets up his ideal world of endless menial, but oh so satisfying, fetchquests.

"Feel to players" being the operative phrase there. Totally understand worrying about that, but no matter how it ends up you will know the amount of work and care that went into it. And all of us are cheering for you!

"it will be the right conclusion, so far as I'm capable of creating it." caught me in an unexpected place. I definitely know that feeling. You've done an excellent job so far in making the mechanical complexity serve the narrative, and I anticipate the same will hold true here. You've brought many projects to satisfying conclusions already, and you've always done good work on TLS itself. I think what you're capable of is definitely up to the task of ending this in a way that feels right.

Argo The Ratfolk

For what it's worth, you have my complete confidence and support that this next update, whenever it does arrive -will be excellent and a truly satisfying conclusion to the story and game. ^~^

Dubsington

Yeah, you have a ton of credits in the bank.

Barissia

She was a Skater bus, she said 'see ya later' cus, he wasn't good enough for her!

Abso Haram

Sierra, been looking forward to this for a long time. Knock it out of the park. I've never been disappointed by anything you've released. Been itching to start a new playthrough.
