Okay, two items of business this week!

First, I was unaware until recently, but someone put up an entry for TLS on the GOG Dreamlist, so if you use GOG please consider upvoting:

https://www.gog.com/dreamlist/game/the-last-sovereign

Back during the crisis regarding adult games, I actually jumped through all the hoops to apply for GOG... crickets. I don't know whether that means soft rejection or if they just haven't gotten to it. In any case, it can't hurt to have higher numbers showing that people are interested, so if you want to help me get my games backed up in more reliable places, please vote for TLS!

Second, I guess I should talk about TLS DLC in greater detail. Some general guidelines for DLC based on my overall goals:

No balance-changing content, especially anything that could be perceived as pay to win.

Nothing that makes the core game feel incomplete. I promised that TLS would always be free and I want to stick to that, so I can't lock away major content.

The goal is to give people who don't want to use Patreon a method to give me money if they enjoy TLS.

Right now I'm looking for DLC that can be completed prior to launch, not massive expansions that would require a ton of time from me or Annikath.

This is the overall plan for DLC:

Yarra's Thanks: Pure donation DLC that already exists.

???: I'd like to have something else to capitalize on the launch.

???: If I did create a substantial expansion, it would have to be scheduled many months after the launch. This is possible, but not certain/promised.

Ultimate TLS Companion: In the future, when TLS is not just complete but wrapped up, I intend to make a final DLC that includes all the bonus artwork, a developer's commentary, and other things that would appeal to hardcore fans of the game. This requires a lot of time to develop and wouldn't be appropriate now anyway.

I hope that makes the scope and limitations clearer! Some pointed out that there may be no DLC options that actually fit my restrictive requirements, and it's possible that I've put myself in a corner here. Nonetheless, I do think there are some options to consider.

By far the simplest option would be to bundle the higher resolution artwork as a DLC. I had considered making this part of the final "companion" DLC, but there's enough content that perhaps this would be justified. Unsure on price, as it's similar to the art pack here.

I think "Broom DLC" is a funny idea, but I'm not sure what effect it should actually have. I don't want to remove the running joke, I just think people might chuckle over a cheap DLC that lets you interact with all the broom requests.

One of the most obvious ideas would be custom outfits, the problem there is just avoiding it getting out of hand. Someone suggested specific sets, for example a "succubus outfit" DLC that would give Yarra, Qum, Nalili, and Riala new outfits. I think that makes sense conceptually, though even there it would be more of an investment than you might think due to all the battle busts.

Of course, there's an additional limitation: I haven't done involved DLC before and don't know how it works. DLC that just includes art assets goes in the game folder and presumably I can figure it out. DLC that launches a separate executable (like a bonus/side episode) should also be possible. But having the game check for DLC and then make changes? I honestly have no idea how to do that or if it's even possible in RPG Maker, much less VX Ace.

So yes, that's the situation overall in greater detail than I gave last post. If anyone has brilliant ideas that navigate all the variables, fire away, but otherwise I am inclined to go for the thanks/artwork/companion model I described above.

That's all for this week. Please vote for TLS on GOG if possible, and I'll see you next time!

Considering all the scenes that still lack art in Chapters 4 & 5- the game is playable and great as is, but that art would make it better and could easily be installed as a dlc without affecting gameplay much. But you might not get it done by the launch window you want, and you might not want to put it behind a paywall for all fans. Especially since I’m not just talking about the adult scenes but ones that are earmarked for wholesome content like Vhala’s quest conclusion. If you need something to take up a collection for, it could qualify I guess.

TBH

Oooh, talking about costumes, I think it'd be funny to have a 'swap clothes dlc'. Having Hilstars and Qum swap outfits just seems too funny

Captain Hair

Any Grynyth scenes in the art pipeline? She and the final member are the only harem members lacking art, if memory serves.

SerEaglenose

Don't know how feasible this would be, but one that wouldn't require more art, change the balance, or its absence subtract from the story could be a "slice of life" dlc, a series of small events spread throughout the game of the Harem living their lives, like the Ocrent bar conversations, like say when you leave Stinneford for the first time you hear a meowing from your pack from a Kitten Qum grabbed that you make her give to a child, because a mine is no place for kittens miss succubus. (I know the pass isn't actually a mine, but Lord of the Rings reference is going to reference) You could put an event in the post game for people to view them all who don't want to replay the entire game, (maybe even frame it like the pencil episode of Community or Morty's Mind Blowers episode of Rick and Morty, a clip show of things you've never seen before) but it would also be a fun little bonus incentive to see them in context for long time players too.

genericname12345

Would something like an in-game art gallery be possible? To host fanart and memes? Might be somewhat 4th-Wall breaking, but got the idea from Epic Battle Fantasy 5.

Besrodio

This would probably be well exceeding the threshold of effort, but implementing Fuckball as a sidegame with no tangible rewards outside of joke weapons/equipment. Probably as more of a management sim than any direct controlling of games.

sierralee

Not sure if there's confusion here, but art will continue to be added to the game as it has in the past. The DLC would be an additional option to get the same art as files at higher resolution.

sierralee

Pff, that's a funny concept. XD I would be inclined to put that into a comic or fanart over a full swap DLC.

sierralee

Hmm, that's potentially a good argument to move them into the next set of scenes. Not that I'm promising one scene per character much anymore, but it would be more variety.

sierralee

Self-contained DLC stories would indeed be possible! That requires some effort on my part, but not an unreasonable amount. I think my main concern would be building this in such a way that people feel it's worth the value.

sierralee

There's no technical reason it couldn't happen.

sierralee

Hah, I have to nix the idea of a full Fuckball minigame, sorry.

Revy77710

I had the idea with the Broom DLC because of all that you've mentioned here. It shouldn't be all to much work (I think), compared to different char clothing, which means adding more combat busts. Plus the answer to "... I'm not sure what effect it should actually have.". Nothing much other than being a joke, that was the point. Since it doesn't add any Pay2Win mechanics, and it isn't too substantial that people without the DLC feel missing something. There is just one single problem I see. The game is fairly long, and I'm sure I play it more than once... but not everyone wants to play a long game multiple times. But the DLC would be mostly for people which played through the game first, or else, the joke wouldn't make too much sense.

AchtungNight

There was confusion, clarification appreciated. Now in the postgame btw, after a marathon session last night. Enjoying it. :)

AchtungNight

While you’re at it- Death needs a portrait.

Martin caballero

This might conflict with the very first point, but what about making your own a tip guide? With how easy it can be to fall behind in hidden values, (Basing this off how you mentioned you felt like making a big rubber banding investment.) maybe a official tip guide would be possible? Of course, there will always be the wiki that are available for free, but those go really into detail and can at times take away from the magic off the game if you follow them. Yes, i know there are other less detailed guides out there. But the appeal of an official, less hand holding version of a guide sounds nice to me. Especially since you could add insight into certain choices/paths or maybe "Funnel" people into habits you want them to have while playing TLS. I'm just spit balling here while on a bus back home, but i thought I'd throw my idea into the ring. Maybe it might help your own ideas, or something. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Captain Hair

It would also give you the excuse to write that Grynyth affection scene you were waiting for art to do...... Or you can get out art for the "Fuck the entire elven race" scene for the Bertricia/Potion Hermit/Misc. Elf fans.

sierralee

I'm not clear what your idea actually is.

sierralee

There's discussion of this deep in the comments of last week's post. While I get the desire for this, I would indeed be concerned about duplicating all the community resources. I'd have to figure out an angle I felt had a lot of added value, which isn't impossible.

Rachnera

> But having the game check for DLC and then make changes? I honestly have no idea how to do that or if it's even possible in RPG Maker, much less VX Ace. The script you use for Steam achievements apparently already contains a function that can be called to check if you own a particular Steam DLC: https://github.com/GMMan/RGSS_SteamUserStatsLite/blob/r7/steam_user_stats_lite.rb#L157 So, **in theory**, should already be usable, without the need to add or set up anything else. Standard VX Ace condition, script option, and a syntax like "SteamUserStatsLite.instance.is_dlc_installed(app_id)" where app_id is the id of the DLC. You can probably test it right away by trying to add a dialogue checking if Yarra's thanks (1032050) is installed.

guillaume nguyen

Frankly a DLC where we force Simon to collect all the brooms as a requirement for completing the game is just too funny XDXDXD Especially since he would grumble all the way ^^

Desertopa

It might be more work than you'd want to go to for a piece of DLC, but I remember when I mentioned feeling bad for the Fuckball players, because they'd just had their roster of prizes hollowed out at a time when the game was most needed for national morale, you talked about the possibility of a Fuckball revival sidequest. I could also totally see Ralph committing himself to making his way to the top of the Fuckball league. Personally, I think it would make for some fun role-reversal to have the party offering castoffs from their own inventory as epic prizes for competitors to fight over.

Revy77710

My idea was a DLC which puts a broom into the inventory of the party. And because of that, some NPCs comment on it. Or the chars comment on it, when interacting with the questboard. It's an item that does nothing other than provide flavortext for certain things. Like, a char gasping, saying "I can' believe your found one!" or something like that. You can go a step further and make it an actual partymember, which would require one single combat bust of that thing just standing there. It't like having an empty slot, but it's attackable... so it acts as a decoy. But since putting literally every other char in that place would be a better idea, it wouldn't be P2W if the Broom is the worst option to have. There are a few places you can go with this idea, without breaking your own rules, since it is a worthless item meant to get a chuckle out of the hardcore audience.

Abso Haram

Depends on how much work you want to take on, but a tiny side adventure of two chosen smashing their way through a map to defeat the Doom King only to die like idiots at the end could be fun as a DLC. Reward could be an extremely powerful sword that makes you act like an idiot when you pick it up, so nobody wants to. Or a little side adventure where the Incubus King attacks the Fucklord and they kick each others ass, with the reward being a powerful sex toy or something Simon can find later on that is too gross for anyone to want to use. I like Vunne and it's a shame she gets so little screentime, so maybe a side story about her escaping when the Fucklord dies. A little more complicated due to having to tie into hidden values. Reward could be a giant Lustlord portrait or statue you can display in your base. You could do a side episode with Nerissa before she removed herself from the world. It would be about attending a political event and making sure everything stays neutral and apathetic, which would involve politicking in Old Givini so everyone involved has to come to an unsatisfying compromise that solves no issues. Reward could be an accessory that raises defense and hp by x 100 and attack, mp, and agility by 0, something along those lines. You could also do a Goddess Trainer for Wilhemina, except it would be a Kingdom Runner event where she would go around and try to fix her kingdom's bureaucracy and fight against the council. Reward could be some of the color changing plants for your base. A Wendis story for the base could be fun. Just have her interacting with all the other harem members and hitting on them. Reward could be a new sex scene, though that might be out of scope. A Grubbak adventure to set up an Orcish Navy through the Senate, or Sho trying to optimize orc pools could be fun. Reward could be an Orcish Navy counter which never gets used in game, or in Sho's case a handsome orc that can be posted in you base that won't go out to fight because he's worried about scars. A Trin episode where she tries to set up a secret Fuckball league because it would bother Simon would be funny, and you could do it in the same way as Wynn's companion currently works. Reward could be a fuckball, a sextoy ball covered in dildos that takes up 3 item slots (hand, hand, armor.) All the assets and frameworks are pretty much there already, and integration could be by interacting with a trigger you put in the world. All are things you won't go for unless you already like the game. Looking forward to whatever it winds up being.

Trisk

Another idea that might fit all the criteria (if it isn't too much work): Bonus scenes that don't fit into the narrative of the game. Outside the narrative to avoid feeling like they're cut content that should be in the base game. Maybe accessed from a crystal in the HQ or something like that. That could include things that happened but we weren't there for it. Like it was before game, or away from where any of the protagonists could see. It could also include fully non-canon scenes. Like showing us character's fantasies, or "what if" scenarios like "What if Simon hadn't escaped from Riala at the beginning?".

An_Insane_Rogue_AI

Of the many ideas I'm reading in the comments here, the side story following another character is definitely the one I find most interesting, I'd find it especially interesting to have some content where we get to actually know some of the other Incubus Kings better before we stab them.

steve

so, if you wanted to do a short story with either Xerces or Hester, about when they first started pursuing research into their plans to basically become gods might be interesting. It would reframe their end game evolution as a tragedy, as you could show how they had lost track of the truly important things. The challenge would be keeping it small, so its not too much effort, but I think it would be in an interesting way to bring a new perspective to those villains. However, if that's a bit much, I would second the suggestion to make a slice of life dlc. I would just love to have a few more moments to enjoy with the characters if I did a replay.

Dillosauras

upvoted and shared the gog thing, happy to help out especially with this stupid censorship bs, dlc sounds cool ill def get any and all when they come out

Lord Forte Games

Yeah, I use an implementation like this to give my DLC rewards in Noblesse.

Lord Forte Games

For whatever it's worth, I've implemented both DLC-triggered effects and art swaps based on a setting in Noblesse, so it's definitely possible to do.

Jens Mikli

Megail's contempt DLC always set at x100 times the price of Yarra's thanks. Could also unlock shittier investment opportunities and other annoyance features!

Martin caballero

I see what you mean, It would be pretty hard to not duplicate community resources huh? I won't expand on this idea since it means potentially rehashing the other discussion that i am ignorant on, so I'll digress. What about a smaller donation option? "Simon's Thanks" for like 5$ or something like that? I know its no effort at all, but it would fulfill all the criteria heh. Plus, i know some people irl that hesitate to even spend 7$ on a discounted games, so why not lower the barrier of entry for donation when the game release? It would be by far the easiest option as well, and without the fear of not providing an adequate enough "DLC experience". Idk if its been talked about yet however, so forgive me if its another fully talked about idea!

sierralee

A smaller donation actually hasn't been discussed! There are games that just have many different donation packs, so it isn't out of the question. I'd have to think about how to implement such a thing.

sierralee

I never imagined that it would just work out of the box like this, but it did! Well, not in an actual build, but the test worked the same way that the achievement test did. Thank you for looking into the documentation. ^-^

sierralee

Really appreciate you boosting the GOG campaign! TLS has avoided censorship so far, but it's better to be careful.

Langy

A broom manufacturer DLC investment that's not economically beneficial but maybe pays for itself - and thus clearly not pay-to-win - would be kinda hilarious if you could figure out how.

Chad McChadington

Lahmi Mahmi DLC. But in all seriousness a short Hester dlc that takes you through various stages of her life so you can see her background and changes in her world view that lead her to doing what she did would be dope. Or...and hear me out here you pull the trigger on Fuckball.

Chad McChadington

Or Alonons story for that matter. Both him and Hester are probably two of my favorite characters that I wish got a bit more screen time. I would love to see him "break" as a man. Going from a well respected king who was admired to the "senile" old man he is when the game takes place. That could be really interesting. You could also do a small dlc around Simon and Wendis when she dies or through parts of the war up until her death but personally I'd prefer dlc based on other characters, like Alonon, Hester, Xerces etc, who's backstories are only glossed over.

Dubsington

An idea that would meet the first 3 requirements but might fall down on #4, depending on what you'd consider "a lot": Fan-servicey DLC that leans into the porn aspect, since that would be (a) fun and (b) not impact the balance at all. (If we're going to lean a bit mercenary here, let's have some fun with it!) Basically, I'm thinking some very small DLCs that just unlock a repeatable sex scene or two, although they'd have to be gated by certain story points. If these cater to some specific taste group you'll probably get modest but reliable monetary yield, as all the fans of X will definitely buy the relevant DLC. You could run some polls and find what kinks people would pay to see that didn't make it into the main game, or which intra-harem "ships" people would pay to see in detail. For example, I'd be thrilled to pay a few bucks for a DLC that unlocks a sequence of escalating scenes building to a repeatable Carina x Robin H-scene; this should probably be gated by both girls being affection-locked so as not to screw up the story. You could price it on the cheap ($5-$10?) with text-only lead-ups and a single "payoff" CG, or charge more but players would expect CGs on each scene. I'd be fine with paying $20-50 if I got a series of sexy, illustrated scenes following that particular "ship".

JD

I love GOG, DRM-free games are great, but their selection process is not very transparent to say the least. I don't know if they don't have enough people to work through the process, GOG is tiny compared to Steam, or if it's some problem with EU/Polish law, but sometimes good indies or actual old games can't get on GOG while low-quality NSFW and big budget titles get through. They don't have a problem with allowing NSFW games (many of them on GoG are very... basic to be polite) in their shop and TLS is at 160+ votes already, so let's hope it works this time.

Jan Dietrich

As some have already mentioned, creating a Xerces (or Philon?) / Hester - focused DLC seems definitely like a worthwhile idea. Especially Xerces always striked me as a fundamentally tragic figure, despite a century old layer of emotional detachment. I would be very interested in exploring his background. As for the companion: also full support, I'd love to see how the game evolved.

Jan Dietrich

Other characters I'd love to explore more are actually the Incubus Emperor and the Fucklord. Who where they before the shard, from what did they come from etc. Sometimes it's better to show and don't tell of course, but if you'd be willing to create character-focused storylines as a DLC anyway, why not those two. :D

Ark Tolei

DLC that converts every broom into a mop. It's difficult for me to really judge what would make a good DLC that doesn't impact the main game balance aside from scenarios of some sort. I could see a scenario angle that either follows a specific chosen as they gather all the brooms in the world to unlock some ultimate power (that turns out to be a cosmetic for the base when they drop when they inevitably attack the party). If the goal is to not impact the main game balance, I do prefer silly over serious. A scenario pack with a small number of fairly simple scenarios with low stakes writing (i.e. you don't have to worry about the plot implications of every word very much) but which maybe let us witness stuff we know that happens from the perspective of a random chosen who tries (and ultimately fails) to impact the plot. The world lore definitely implies that the chosen are always up to shenanigans everywhere but are largely ineffectual.

sierralee

This sort of thing is possible, but I wouldn't feel right putting so much of Annikath's time toward it while core scenes remain unillustrated. We'd have to revisit the idea a couple years down the road, if the game still has support.

Elena Tyler

Maybe something for Death. Maybe Death could get a bit of an upgrade. Maybe she needs something to move away from the old scythe business. Maybe she needs something else to clean away the souls of the dead. Maybe she needs... A MOTHERFUCKING BROOM

cathulion etharn

megails disgusted face staring down her nose at you replacing all her regular face? Shut up and take my money

AchtungNight

Uh, I think the postgame Bloody Spire has her covered. Heh.

AchtungNight

1 complaint. I’m enjoying the postgame but I went to the slime dungeon in Climax, and when I left, I can’t get back there or to the training grounds. And I had not visited the training grounds yet. :( Oh well, another replay reason, I guess.

sierralee

Well, good/bad news: the training grounds should not be accessible in the postgame because there's nothing new there.

genericname12345

In that case, I will hope and pray that we get an in-game fanart gallery complete with character commentary.
