Because next week's update will be a quiet one, as is tradition, today's post is a real grab bag of assorted issues and thoughts I want to get out before the end of the year.

First of those is that we have some more fanart commissioned by Argo! This is Theo and Senka from TWC, in an imagined future scenario that will make sense if you read the most recent book. Very cute little moment for the holidays. ^-^

This past week I put out another art preview for $10 backers. As I said there, the plan is to continue commissioning art at the usual rate, but big art updates for TLS will come out somewhat less frequently, because there won't be much to them other than art and bug fixes (since revisions like Eustrin won't be that common). Maybe every three months or so, though I reserve the right to shift this around as benefits my schedule.

TLS is up to 988 reviews, and still clinging to the Overwhelmingly Positive distinction! It's nice to see that the new reviews weren't entirely a flash in the pan, and it looks like we'll get to 1000 sooner rather than later. ^-^

Patreon and Pricing

Man, Patreon is really pushing me to add new features, increase pricing, and do other random stuff. When you consider inflation, my total support has actually been declining for a good while, which is another example of how sticking to a niche isn't sustainable long term.

That said, I'm not going to increase pricing and I'm going to keep turning off everything I don't like (when they let me). When all is said and done, I'm not a starving artist anymore and I'm doing fine financially. I know inflation and all the same pressures are hitting everyone else, and if I can afford to give a little, why should I push that onto others?

I might eventually change tier pricing, if inflation goes far enough, especially if there's a way to grandfather past patrons at their current rates. But for now, I stay the course and focus on creating things.

Maybe this is getting too political, but I don't like this trend. I've read that now over half of spending in the USA (my biggest market) is driven by the top 10% wealthiest. This is actually nothing new: China's global spending is likewise dominated by an upper tranche that leaves everyone else behind, and from my understanding India is even worse. Lots of markets are just ignoring the majority of people to continue chasing the money.

Now, it would be silly of me to pretend that my little games and books really matter much compared to serious economic factors. But to the degree I can, in my own fields, I wish it could be otherwise. For example, when it comes to books, I'm leery of how the market is increasingly focused on expensive special editions and the cheap editions are all dying in favor of Amazon-controlled ebooks. There's a saying that goes "reading books and buying books are two separate hobbies" - I agree, I'm just not laughing about it. =/ I am a lifelong reader, not a lifelong book-buyer.

This has probably been mostly irrelevant, but it's an extract of some of my thoughts lately. Thanks to everyone's support and my steps over the years, I'm in a position where I can make some decent creative decisions, and if my work brings anyone a little happiness, that's at least a grace note in a difficult world. ^-^

Breaks

Some people have been urging me to take a break after TLS, but unfortunately that isn't really an option. As I've discussed in greater detail previously, a free game has no surge of income on launch, and a period in between projects is the worst time to take a break. That's why I actually took a vacation earlier just this year, so it's fine if I don't take another for a good while.

Thanks to so many of you for not leaving the Patreon, though. People here supported me up to this point in my career and I'm still grateful for you all. ^-^ The money goes not only to fully illustrating TLS, but toward my future projects, which I'm working hard on.

As usual, the end of the year will be quiet, but I'll be working away. I hope to have some fun announcements for you as soon as the holiday season is over!

TBH

Things economically seem to be going worse and worse for most people, so I appreciate you being forthcoming with your thoughts when it comes to this stuff In a personal manner, things have gone better this year, so patreon subscriptions haven't worried me for a while. Even if it was the contrary, however, the amount of enjoyment I derive from what you create is truly priceless, so thanks again for all the work

Eldritchreality

I can't speak for other people, but I did want to get the sentiment across that I'm on your patreon to support you as an artist rather than to pay for any specific project. I like how prolific you are and how you're able to write and explore so many different types of things. Some of them land for me, some of them don't, and the fact that you have the breadth to have that effect impresses me to the point where I want to do a little bit to enable you to keep having that creative freedom. That's why I'm on your patreon.

Eldritchreality

I should clarify that the stories that haven't landed for me have been because I'm not in the target audience and not in any way because they were bad.

Waffles

Thank you for your continued work in producing all the various cool pieces art of that you do. May you have a Merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Seriously, Senka and Theo are such a couple ^^ Though knowing them, they're both too awkward to bring the subject first, so it'll take quite a while until we reach the handholding milestone XDXDXD

Yup, I hope we all have a quiet and fun Christmas and New Year. I've been buying more books on Kindle then real books, just because of well... Space. Most of my bookshelves are full of gaming books that I don't play much anymore, and my real books are a lot of worn paperbacks amidst my few collections of hardbacks. Jordan's Wheel of Time, Sanderson's Path of Kings... Just to name a few.

sierralee

I'm very grateful for everyone who supports me this way, and I hope that my projects over the next year will repay that investment!

sierralee

To be clear, I'm supportive of the ebook part, just not the dominance of the Amazon ecosystem. It's the books being made to look good on BookTok that strike me as a bad omen for reading.

Argo The Ratfolk

As others have said, I'm here to support you across all your mediums of entertainment, be they books, games, or anything else for that matter! (Not that I expect you to suddenly get into the movie business too or something, as fun as one directed by you probably would be! XD) I only wish I could afford to support you more and consistently than I do already! While it isn't the primary goal, a part of me does also always hope that others coming across some of the fan art I commissioned (even if the vast majority of it is not Canon and only from my own ideas) will get inspired by it and to check you out and support you as well. Like a sort of soft advertising without it explicitly being as such -especially since I know how soul draining you say marketing your content is for you!

sierralee

Just books and games for the foreseeable future, but I really appreciate that support! And I'm always happy to spread your fanart on every channel I can, and of course you can feel free to do the same. You never know. ^-^

I'm a little sad that the ledger function bug reports have slowed down and we're just getting duplicates. They were an OK way to procrastinate working on my horrible passion project. I don't mind pitching in with my Patreon support in addition to volunteering time on cool game functions, even if it is, as I told my therapist, "technically worse than slavery". (But not really.)

Argo The Ratfolk

Indeed, I imagine neither of them are big on the "mushy" stuff, but they show affection in their own ways, perhaps as using soul crafting itself as a form of love language? xD

guillaume nguyen

That's why I hope Theo secretly/subconsciously kept the lover's petal ^^

JunkoUesugi

Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays, Sierra! 🎄

JunkoUesugi

I'm so grateful for another year of TLS! Your work is incredible and I'm so excited to see what's next! ❤️

sierralee

Thanks! I wish you the same, and the same to anyone who happens to be reading this. ^-^ Big things in store for next year, I hope everyone will enjoy them!
