First, I'm glad that the Three Farewells postlude was so well-received. ^-^ That was one of the more emotional stories in the set, whereas the next (titled Distributed Orgy) will be one of the more sex-focused. It occurs to me just now that I've placed two Yarra stories in a row, but the second one is really more about the entire harem. That's for next week, anyway.

This week, I regret that I need to announce a shift in one of my core projects. I don't like to do this, as I want to be consistent and focused, but I think this is necessary to be consistent in the long term.

Stepping Back: Omnipocalypse

Specifically, I have decided that I need to set Omnipocalypse on the back burner for now. I've done some financial projections for how much the art phase would cost and the totals are daunting. In retrospect, it seems overambitious: the very first build had twelve different party members, each with a ton of skills, and so many of those characters would have needed major variants due to player choices... it would have added up to a lot.

I also worry it would have been a bad test of such an investment, because the loop-based gameplay is relatively experimental. Modern urban settings are also not common for retro RPGs and my market research... well, it makes me feel more cautious.

In general I've had some disappointments on the business end of things. The publisher deal that turned out to be a poison pill, losing the artist for a side project, and several other hopeful collaborators who disappeared. I'm not making this decision emotionally, just reflecting that I am a mostly solo dev with modest resources and I need to be careful that my ambitions don't exceed my reach. Not that Omnipocalypse would have bankrupted me, but it could potentially have set my career back instead of launching it forward.

I still hope to return to the project one day, likely even using the same foundation many of you played. I regret this especially because people never got to see the majority of the plot, including so many reveals that were the reasons for the initial setup. Poor Devin and Alice, getting set on the back burner again. T-T

Stepping Forward: Four Liars

My new plan is to pivot to another one of the interim projects I mentioned in my Dreams for the Future post. This will be able to use the majority of the tech stack that I built up for Omnipocalypse, so I'm not starting from scratch. It should also be faster and less expensive to finish, and hopefully a better test of this sort of investment in an RPG.

The WIP title for this one was Four Heroes, though I'm going to refer to it as Four Liars in general, and the title will probably be stylized as "Four Heroes Liars". It will have a tighter scope and, I believe, a potentially safer audience. In some ways it's similar to TLS, in that it takes a familiar fantasy concept, breaks it down, and builds it back up again.

Now for some good news: this isn't a vague future aspiration, it's what I've been working on intensely for a while now. I hope that I will be able to deliver the first build of this game to everyone before too long. I can't say for certain that I can hit the upcoming Friday, but that is my first target goal.

2026 has not been the year I wanted in many ways, despite my best efforts. But I'm still extremely grateful to have this career and thankful to everyone supporting me. I hope you all will enjoy the things to come.

While I am saddened to hear about Omnipocalypse, it is certainly understandable. I will certainly look forward to a new build for Four Heroes Liars though! I continue to very much appreciate the transparency.

Oh no I was really looking forward to the next build of Omnipocalypse. :( But you know I am always willing to try out something new from you so I will give this one a shot whenever it comes out.

Do the central characters of 4 Liars ride horses colored white, red, black, and pale? Like another famous quartet? Just curious, I will check them out either way. ;)

sierralee

No horses at all, so far, nor apocalypses. =P

That's unfortunate since I really liked the concept of Omnipocalypse, but I'm confident whichever project(s) you decide to focus on will come out great.

I respect your decision, but that is a hard pill to swallow, tbh. Specially because, I think that there was genuine interest for a spiritual successor to Ouroburos. For me personally, it was probably the project of yours that I was most invested into, so... yeah. It's going to be harder to be fair to 4HL, but I will try to. I'm not sure that giving these kind of news and announcing a new project in the same post are the right way to do things, but you know best, ofc. Lastly, a small suggestion/request: if there are any other projects that doesn't make financial sense, try to avoid doing things like you had done with Omniapocalyse.

sierralee

That's still a question of timing and technology. I like the idea of this, but it only makes sense if it's done based on new technology, which is beyond my reach at the moment.

Believe me, I regret this too, but ultimately I need to make the decisions that I think will allow me to continue as a creator.

It is truly disappointing to see Omnipocalypse get shelved, I was quite excited for it. I suppose it’s inevitable that this happens sometimes. I appreciate your transparency, and you’ve always delivered consistently, so I trust this won’t slow you down. I simply mourn for what could have been.

Hopefully at some point you simultaneously have access to the finances to justify the risk inherent in such an asset heavy project, and an art team with the time to devote to making it happen. It was a lot of fun digging into those early Omnipocalypse builds. The Four Liars definitely sounds like a project that will live or die based on the writing. I recently played In Stars and Time, which is in a similar wheelhouse to what I imagine the project to be. I don't recall if that was recommended by a comment here or if it was just steam throwing it at me randomly, but it was a great example of clever ludonarrative harmony. I think there's a lot of space for more explorations of adventurers as people, rather than focusing on their conquest of the big bad. You certainly have the writing chops to pull it off, and I think because of how rare it is for teams to have actual writers at the head of projects, it's a genre that will always be underserved.
