New update available on the blog:

https://the-last-sovereign.blogspot.com/2019/10/tls-0462-public-release.html

Expect the next weekly update to have some interesting developments. Though I'm mostly focused on TLS, some stuff I set in motion a while back should finally be finished soon.

Here's a "fun" change of pace set of chronology questions for you: 1. How many years have elapsed since the start of the game when we talk to Altina at the start of Ye Olde Fucklord Fracas? I'm asking relative to her throwaway line "But it makes me wonder just where I'll be in another five years... life can be so strange.". Since it is discussing her life since the start of the game it would seem to imply that 5 years have passed since the start of the Prologue. My estimate had been 4 years. Since Orcent's transformation just before the start of the 3rd Arclent War was ~2 years after the Prologue, and Ch4 started 1 year after the end of the 3rd Arclent War. My current guesstimate is that Ch4 lasted 1 year, but if Altina's line indicates that the Fracas happened 5 years after the Prologue, either Ch4 or the 3rd Arclent War lasted a LOT longer than I think. 2. IIRC, we never sorted out what Sarai's actual age was at the start of the game was. Lostone had an age of 38, which made her 13 at the time of Wendis' being turned into a newt. (She got better.) I picked 58 as a good enough guesstimate, but it'd be nice to get an accurate number in both her wiki bio and the Timeline. 3. I've officially decided we'll find out how old Woofy Head Lady and Mr. White are when you tell us.

sierralee

1) Your timeframe is correct. Unless I really miswrote the Altina line, she's speaking in general terms, not suggesting that five years have passed up to that point. 2) Yeah, I never nailed down anything. Sure, she can be 58. 3) It'd be pretty hard to accurate guess their age based on information given so far.

I'm fairly sure that my original guess of Ulrissa being fit in her 60s or 70s is wrong. (The initial introduction to her said she was mortal and had been an adult during the 2nd Arclent War, so that seemed reasonable.) I still think that Ulrissa at least must have been born after the 1st Arclent War, otherwise her self identifying as being of Givini ethnicity doesn't really make sense. We don't have any guidance on Tanurak except that he was presumably active before the time Ivala got stuck on the mountaintop, and that the time he was existent before Ulrissa Sith Apprenticed him was greater than the lifespan of the late lamented Great Sage of Ghenalon. Plus pedantic speculations on the rate of decay of draconic skeletons in the Aram desert, but I think we've agreed to believe that the magic particles Tanurak eliminated were used in draconic bone growth, and the elements constituting the bones are not as vulnerable to decomposition and erosion.

Jeffrey Lebowski

Honestly, I'm getting a really ominous feeling about whether Ivala will actually end up being on our side... I mean all we know about her is that she's been manipulating Simon's fate for a troublingly long time, and we don't know is Simon's long term plans even mesh with hers. I'll just be sitting here hoping that the Doomed King's titular doom hasn't actually been planned for longer than we thought... I think this paranoia stems from the fact that Simon is a subversion of an evil overlord, and evil overlords tend to die in fantasy narratives, so I'm increasingly worried that you are gonna sucker punch us with a tragic ending.

Darthjake

I'd say Ivala chose him as the best of all evils, but he's not evil. So we'll go with he's her best choice in a bad situation. Especially because the chosen are so screwed up. Me, I just hope that Simon eventually puts the Mother in her place, facedown in the forest ready to receive...

Quiet Stranger

What marvelous timing, maxing out Trin moments before a divine avatar asked my Simon whether he'd come to love her. The scene rather answered itself for me, didn't it? I haven't commented before on how beautiful I find Mithyn's design, I think, but I do look forward to the close encounter she seems fated to have with Simon. The reveal was excellent. I am pleased to finally have my suspicions confirmed, after all these years. My money is on the Anak as our jailer, based on the comment on "harvesting" from the introductory dialogue between Xerces and Xestris. He also seems much more ambitious than he lets on. But if I could take a second guess, I'd wager on subtle, sly Hester; I wouldn't have thought of her if not for the harem believing that their enemy had to presently be on Arclent, and now that I do, it makes more sense the more I think about it... I am pleased with the idea that Ivala set Simon on his path and particularly by the gentle insinuations by her "daughter" or by Mithryn that the goddesses had an abusive relationship with the original Lustlord—that they might like one with a better man, with a man perhaps like him, kind and wise. It ties together the themes of the story nicely. I also think you have chosen some especially excellent soundtracks lately. The Fucklord's Tower had a tempo that was very fitting, even more so once it effectively became Tanurak's theme. And it's probably my imagination, but I was sure that I heard Ivala's motif in the Deepwilds Shrine...

lostone2

Somehow related to this conversation. There is any time-skip between chapters 4 & 5? According to the dialogue, I would say that not much time has passed at all (maybe a week or something around that).

sierralee

As much as I'd like to encourage people to expect sucker punches, I've been upfront about the fact that TLS will have a positive ending. This is competence porn about making a difference as much as other types of porn. No comment on the fate of anyone in particular, nor will things be 100% happy.

sierralee

It took the characters around three months to find the location of the Deepwilds.

sierralee

Glad you liked the reveals! If you liked Mithyn, I think you'll enjoy a lot of the content in the last chapter, and of course many questions will finally be answered.

Jeffrey Lebowski

Oh good! I wouldn't expect everything to be idyllic; harsh realities are a main theme after all! But I'm still relieved that this is not going in a tragic direction such as Simon getting ultimately outplayed or having Simon slowly become overambitious and actually becoming some sort of enlightened but still overbearing despot/god as he walks the paths of ultimate power.

Hakkira

Howdy Sierra :) Love the update but I have run into what I am hoping is a bug. I'm at the part of the Erosian War where Tanurak Strikes. I carefully planned everything out to make sure my prep score was able to reach 12 so to nullify anything he does. Problem is that even though my score is 12 (thanks to Tak'Kan Tower being higher than 4) he still succesfully strikes [T - Erosia]. Now I'm only following the fantastic wiki guide so perhaps it is wrong and there is no way to avoid him striking at least one place? Any and all help would be most appreciated as I really want to get the best outcome possible (seeing as you made me care about this world and it's characters!)

WaxerRed

Are you sure you have all FOUR of the incubus pieces of equipment as well? The armor from devil's pass in chapter 1 The Helmet from the vaults in chapter 2 The Shield recovered post war in chapter 3 The Pin recovered from the 5.mil pron ruins of chapter 4. You need them all to get the perfect score.

sierralee

There are a lot of details that could make a difference, but I can tell you that none of the strikes are guaranteed. Glad to hear you're invested in the story. ^-^

Hakkira

Wow thanks I just looked and for some odd reason I don't have the armor which is super strange as I have been making this my perfect playthrough so I have been using the guide! After looking it up I realised I had done the optional dungeon and had gotten the Lustplate but for some odd reason I don't have the ceremonial armor even though I remember the dialogue about it... Very odd the guide even says you can't leave until you loot it so something must have gone wrong! Anyway thanks for the heads up on where it was going wrong and thank god for having a save editor otherwise this perfect playthrough would be doomed!

Hakkira

Love the story and have to say this game is tied no.1 position for me which considering it is tied with the Witcher 3 shows how much I rate your game. I bet Simon and Geralt would get along rather well though Geralt might be a bit jealous of Simon being able to have a cool harem! Also after travelling the game world before the war starts I saw how much work you put into the little details by having random NPCS comment on what choices and outcomes came from major events. This greatly impressed me once again so I've upped my pledge by another $10 to show I appreciate the little things you add :) The only further way to impress me at this point is if you go join Bioware and steer them back into the right direction of great rpg making just in time to save the next Dragon Age entry as currently I am fearful of EA destroying another IP i greatly love! R.I.P Mass effect and what were they thinking Anthem!

WaxerRed

One way to might have missed the armor is to have a 'suspicious' amount of EXP or SX during chapter one. Just as a tax collector will come for Geralt if the game thinks he's cheating, certain items or events will be changed in TLS if some tomfoolery is suspected... Or less interestingly if you go through the ruins in chapter 2 instead of 1, then it'll be gone as well.

DukeLeto7

If you need to relax, I'd concentrate on selecting a carpet for HQ that really brings the room together.

sierralee

Glad to hear that you rate the game so highly! I certainly try to put work into making the world feel responsive to your choices, so I'm glad you appreciate that. I can make games like TLS thanks to everyone's support! There was a time when I really wanted to work at Bioware, though given the state of things now it's probably good that I never did. Though I won't be able to make a AAA game, I'm trying to slowly increase the production values of my work.

Hakkira

Ah I see I guess it was due to the "taxman" then due to the *ahem*ahem* generous SX donation of an outside entity known as "Save Editor".... he holds tremondous power greater than Tanurak :P As for AAA games it is a truely sad day when despite having 1000 times more resources than you do Sierra that Bioware released 2 hot pieces of garbage (Anthem, MEA and dishonarable mention ME3 ending) story and narrative wise compared to the masterpiece you have created :) You had previously asked your patrons in which direction your future projects go and I think you should make games that have a Mature ESRB rating as opposed to fully NSFW as then more people could play and talk about your games. In the best of both worlds you could do what adult games on steam often do and release a SFW version with the option of a NSFW patch from elsewhere :) Anyway keep doing what your doing and I look forward to future projects and future TLS content!

Jeffrey Lebowski

Shit, I would have loved your take on Dragon Age if you were one of their writers. You would have written some great political quagmires. Then again, you are *currently* writing some fantastic fantasy politics so I can't complain.

Hakkira

Perhaps we should start a Patreon or kickstarter to force Bioware to make Sierra their Narrative/Story director to prevent the next Dragon age going the way of Andromeda!

sierralee

Haha, if only. =P It would have been interesting to get to be part of a much bigger production, but the outlook seems grim. I'm afraid DA4 will be a mess and then EA will close what remains of Bioware. Doing games with a Mature rating isn't entirely out of the question, though it's also not certain. Though the ability to treat adult issues without fading to black appeals to me, I'm afraid that would give me the stigma of NSFW games while turning away the NSFW audience.

Decanter

If SL really still wanted to get hired by - or direct - a studio like BioWare, I suspect the most likely path to success is to have an impressive portfolio of successful narrative work. For example, she could write something like The Brightest Shadow. A lead writing role would have been nice though. SL seems capable of keeping worldbuilding more consistent than Dragon Age does. For example, I cannot count how many times that series ignored its own lore about the Chantry and instead treated it as stock Catholicism with the label filed off.

Jeffrey Lebowski

So true. Dragon age continuity is always an absolute mess and they don't make the Chantry nearly as interesting of an organization as it could be. I still have naive hope (or is it faith?) that DA4 will still be fun enough to play, but this is coming from a schmuck that enjoyed Andromeda for janky, poorly acted mess that it was. SL could definitely be at least more incisive on the social and philosophical issues she tackles than Bioware, though I suspect that many themes like theology would be forcibly toned down for marketability and maintaining a consistent lore would be more difficult with a larger writing team. Still, a man can dream that SL will get bigger and bigger opportunities.

Hakkira

Indeed Decanter though their last few games broke my heart as a long time fan I still also have the naive hope that DA4 will be a good game! But considering that so many of the core team from Bioware has left it is unlikely :( Ah well at least I still have CDPR and Sierra to count on for good games :)

sierralee

BioWare's hiring practices were actually a bit unusual back when I looked into it, though I don't know how things are today. Notably, being known for writing did work out for RA Salvatore with Kingdoms of Amalur. In any case, I'm not holding my breath. My copy of DA:I is sitting unplayed because I haven't had time, so I'm a bit behind. I hope the best for DA4, but my expectations are set low.

Hakkira

DA:I was okay but Bioware is not good at doing open world games as they just pack MMO style sidequests which drain any fun out of the exploration. Also in DA:I it has a habit of making sidequests and other content have zero impact on the endgame or main narrative which is odd as a lot of the side content is based around making your inqusition force strong but whether you made your faction invincible or spent no time on it at the end you get the same cutscenes with your soldiers wearing silly hats. The castle was also a waste of time as you could not really develop it in a meaningful way. Oddly enough the best version of having a castle I have seen is in Neverwinter Nights 2. DA:I is a good game but sadly not a great game as these type of RPGS will now have to compare to the likes of the Witcher 3 which in my opinion is a masterpiece as still to this day there are still scenes I have yet to discover. I really hope Cyberpunk turns out well as CDPR is under a lot of pressure to deliver now! Ah well hopefully the next Fable and Overlord games will be good but god knows when they will be released and oddly enough the next Fable is being made by a company that has only made racing games in the past so who knows what to expect lol!

2026-11-01 13:00 Hey, Sierra, is it just me, or did those arches in the Wilds look similar to the one at Tyria's shrine for a reason? Was this the place in the Tower that belonged to the Dwarven Goddess? It feels odd - considering how the dwarves are about the stone so much, rather than the green... But those little bell tower things kept making me think of them for some reason.

While this is not a critical plot detail, I'm also going to no comment this one.
