Update time! New version link will soon be below.

Version 0.48.1: https://mega.nz/#!jhVXBIAb!Buvc5oNYZqq-lVPB53CsieM-arUMYQnf3uCulP4RIJ4

TLS 0.48.0

 - New section covering Eustrin and more.

 - One new scene.

TLS 0.48.1

 - Assorted typos and minor bugfixes.

 - Tweaks to the optional enemies. Mostly nerfs, but the easiest method of cheesing them is now gone.

So... I feel like this update has some good content, and I've spent a decent amount of time testing, but I also think that the chance that I screwed something up during my final changes is higher than average. I should have done another run through the whole thing, but I'm burned out due to a number of factors. I'm afraid that a link between maps will have broken or a scene route is blocked or something. This might be one to wait on if you only want to play once.

(Edit from the future: That paragraph appears to be a false alarm on my part. People are finishing the update just fine.)

Having said that, I hope people enjoy this one! I look forward to everyone's thoughts about some of the revelations, which will hopefully include a few you didn't expect. There's also an optional combat challenge that I'm afraid may be too easy, so I welcome feedback there.

That is all for now. If you've sent me messages about any other subjects, I hope to get to them during the bugfixing period, but please be patient as I work on everything.

Ah the ol game of trying to remember which save is for which route. And I'm not sure if it's a starting in the 'end room' bug, but didn't get a full heal inbetween updates.

DukeLeto7

Minor Spoilery Question: How far back did Neranda Learn that DK = Simon? I don't recall the conversation ever happening previously.

WaxerRed

Come on SL, you tellin me Simon's Dominate skill isn't super effective against the Spider Matriarchs? What is he spiderphobic?

WaxerRed

"Afraid an optional challenge might be too easy." Yeah, would not...be to afraid of that. That last boss fight is near impossible.

ECD

In my view...not at all too easy.

aosdh

Excuse me for one second whilst I give my thoughts on Dwarfgest nightmare spiders *incoherent rambling*. That said Robin Qum disrupt+Hilstera made work of them. In terms of balancing them for underleveled players they're way out of their league but they are after all optional. Also I couldn't help feel it was jarring when you got to spoiler character, her art feels so out of place compared to all the other characters, some nice reveals in the end though.

Edward Culham

Ok, finished my update and felt it went pretty well. I am going to say this that I disagree that the spiders should be made easier. It felt like they were a threat that was imposed by the person that I believe is dead now. Speaking of, the update made it feel like he was possibly alive. However, it felt like I should have been able to do more in Eustin to raise the political and economical conditions of it, but nothing could happen as far as I could see. Anyone else feel like the mage actually has a minor shard that he is hiding from Simon.

WaxerRed

Uhhh I think the spiders might have fryed my brain. Where the heck do I need to go in the second tower visit after finding the third barrier? Rialia says we need to go deeper but I keep just walking in circles.

StormyAngel

This was a fun update! I definitely wasn't expecting to run into...said person, at least not right up until I ran into the final barrier. Neat revelations abound and now we're all set to dive into chapter 5! Should be interesting. :) I spotted some map related shenanigans so here's a link to the snapshots I took: https://imgur.com/a/ZF5z9fw Also, on a completely random side note I loved the Dwarven pastries gone stale interaction (yay realism!)...but the ones in the Tower are fine I guess? (Conceptually fresh! Now there's an idea!) Lol.

Captain Hair

Well, the trip to Eustrin didn't go quite the way I expected (I was expecting the Eustrin Independence to overshadow Tower shenanigans) but it was definitely fun. Except that optional boss. Fuck that thing's chain attacks. If it wasn't for the above mentioned Disrupt combo I'd probably still be banging my head on it. I will say the enhanced enemies in that area are tough, but barely manageable. Our special guest's apathy and mocking was amusing to say the least. Hopefully she'll be less... vague.... as things progress. Although I wouldn't be opposed to her getting to turn it on the Lustlord at some point. The tantrum alone would be glorious! Oh, don't know if it's an oversight or not, but she's not on the harem screen. Looking forward to more scenes with her in general. After all, Yarra still needs to get some peeping in!

Ripe

WOW... that was certainly unexpected. Loved the explanation and new character seem like it will be a lot of fun to have around. Just one very, very minor thing... in your message we got in waiting room you said that you started "2019 with a bang". I assume that should have been 2020...

Censuur

Disruption turns the spiders into punching bags, which is so far removed from fighting them without disruption that it feels almost like cheating. At the same time fighting the boss normally is just an RNG nightmare where the boss can just randomly delete your party no matter how far you got.

Jeffrey Lebowski

Yay, I was looking forward to this! This update was really interesting, and provides a lot of new possibilities to think about. I don't know when Neranda was let in on the mostly closely guarded state secret of the DK's domain, but it would make sense that Simon would have brought her into the loop at some point since they have been working together very closely. Are there any other leaders that have been brought into the fold off screen? Elleani? Tyna or Biyue? Since prior to this we only had one section with Neranda present and that was stiffly formal, I didn't truly understand how much of a goddamn powerhouse she was until she punched a tower entity on her first visit. I think our new gues will turn out very interesting, though it is unfortunate that Simon has to take the expedient path despite the personal cost. He hasn't been pressured to make a major moral compromise this hard since recruiting Trin! Given her demeanor and age, I'm thinking about past cryptic lines and once again realizing that this may have been foreshadowed way longer than I thought. I'm glad we got to briefly return to the Deepwilds and learn a bit more. I'm also very interested in the revelation about the Lustlord. I doubt that will have much practical relevance but I'm sure it would throw him into a fit. The Dwaregasts were fuckin' hard please don't make them harder, at least not the miniboss. The Lonely Path felt like a good map to me. Not complex, but its sheer size gave it its own sense of unease and barrenness (not to mention constant worry that I was accidentally going the right way instead of exploring all optional paths first). I can't wait to start seeing divine politics get dragged down to a secular level as Simon and Co. start allying with and opposing them as they try to affect meaningful and imminent change. Also, I hope we get to see Orcent and our new guest have a conversation, not to mention Orcent and Neranda. You know what, just everybuddy should want to be buds with Orcent. Actually, I really would like to see a conversation take place between Orcent and Vhala. They are two very thoughtful companions who decided to join Simon without the "benefits package" the others get and have both undergone significant soul alteration. I bet they would have much to talk about. Is the inevitable Eustrin Final State going to be the end of the major political conflict with Aram, or is Aram as we know it going to go through some death throes anytime soon? I'm just noticing that we are playing Kingmaker in basically every nation worldwide except Aram, and those controlled by hostile Tower entities. Anyway, very good update and I am looking forward to further developments. I'm definitely curious if Ginasta is gonna pull a Kalant or double down and try to destroy metaphysics as a whole. I hope you are doing well!

Trevor

A great update. Gonna sleep on it a bit before I comment more, but it scratches that TLS itch I've had for awhile. Our special guest is a great treat. I wonder how the odd little girl in the tower base will react to her.

Quiet Stranger

The nightmare spiders were tricky. Ultimately, I was forced to win the final battle against them through attrition; Simon, Hilstara, Vhala, and Carina were my winning combination. Vhala's covering file and Carina's secondary revival were necessary just to survive the welcome. I am a fan of our special guest. I enjoyed her coldness, actually; aloof is a good look on her. I hope to see more of her depth as she rediscovers her long memory of regrets and traumas. And it has made me only more curious, of course, about the other guest stars to come... ...particularly our headliner...

DankPotatoes

Man i was glad to find out that TLS actually takes place in the same universe as Wheel of Time! "The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again" On a sidenote, i'm beginning to suspect that you are setting the experience gain from fighting up so that we might end the game, exactly at level 99 or 100, Sierra. That would be so OCD satisfying.

Seil

So, played the update. Tertia is great. I really really like her. Overall update had a decent pacing, we had a return look at the Eustrin. The Broom Joke and new silly ways you take it to never stops being funny. Also i can't wait to see what would happen during the meeting between Tertia and Totally Ordinary and Normal Girl™. P.S. ><i>There's also an optional combat challenge that I'm afraid may be too easy, so I welcome feedback there.</i> Excuse me, but what the fuck? Because either i missed something really obious, or it's was way overtuned. You can't kill 2 adds quickly, they can potentially oneshot one of your party members and Simon was basically Support Allies spam bot. That super damaging, party hitting web attack is nasty.

Runcible Technician

I also think Tertia was fantastic, the conversations she has with Simon show a subtle and interesting personality. I like her. About the other stuff; those spiders yo. I have an optimized run and I was eating it even when I drank my best potions like a thirsty sailor. At least the secret harbor had a trick to it, it was the first area that made me realize the circular breathing of succubus magic. Are we just missing something here?

Rachnera

Social policy, I punch spiders; religious policy, I punch spiders; foreign policy, I punch spiders. An evil so old it predates most goddesses tries to throw the world downright a spiral of death and destruction? I. Punch. Spiders. On another note, when did Qum meet Tanurak? She knows he has no face, but I don't remember Tanurak actually showing his no-face to us directly at any point.

WaxerRed

I was to pre-occupied with the spiders to say it before but really great update SL! Neranda in her first update really did just feel like an angry Janine, but in this update she really came into her own. Not just with the punch, but also with the dialogue upon reaching the surface, and her comments with Yarra. The 'other' character was very interesting to say the least. I find it increasingly impressive how you can have such a large cast of characters and each feels unique. Even if the facesets were turned off I feel like most people would be able to tell who was who just by the personality in the dialogue so great work. Only one minor nitpick (Well two still no yaoi with Mestan) but I think when Neranda is asking Simon to impregnate her and there's talks of making her a human incubator, I really think cock crazy Altina needs some lines on the matter. Preferably, "Get in line hussy! I was here first!"

Roy Cabaniss

I imagine you're going to get a lot of requests to nerf the spiders. They have a point - I've been keeping my party maxed, and it still took about 2 hours to beat this (Vhala, Carina, Robin, and Simon, if anyone's interested). I don't agree, but if you DON'T nerf it, make it very clear that this fight is optional, more optional than most others (a throwaway line of "Can we return later? Yes" or something). TLDR - please don't nerf, but do make leaving it alone an obvious, acceptable option.

Fulminato

great update, i like the new character very much. and finally a section with neranda shine of her own. i wait a lot more from her (the soon the better), in many category. i poke (as usual) in the code, this seem intentional, bit i am compelled to ask/say, the variable [0315] doesn't have any "resolution check" and the switch [3739] is never set.

DankPotatoes

Hey Sierra. Random thought occured to me, half a day after playing the update. In it, Simon describes the Lustlord very matter-of-factly as the "oldest but not the strongest" of the current Incubus Kings. How sure of this everyone appeared to be surprised me a bit. The Lustlord is no weakling, and we have never seen him go all out. Does that mean that the Anak is undoubtedly stronger than him? Or the Empress? Could Simon himself already have surpassed him, or did Simon refer to someone else as the strongest?

Long time fan of this game since I discovered it on ULMF forums of all places, decided to become a patron to properly thank you for your passion, dedication and superb writing you put into making this game.

(Reposting since Patreon appears to have eaten my original post, apologies if this shows up twice) And so the first steps have been taken towards completing the final page of Yarra's roster. More and more pieces are becoming visible on the board. It's going to be fascinating to see how they move, assuming Tanurak doesn't just flip the table. Looks like Tertia's going to be an intriguing character. Not so much world-weary as the-entirety-of-past-present-and-future-existence-weary, but it seems like Simon's kindled a little spark in her yet. It'd be interesting to see a conversation about immortality between her and Esthera. The use of her faceset's #8 expression is hilarious; it's fun to see Simon's benevolence being mocked in equal measure to other Kings' cruelty. It's also good to see Neranda getting out of her chambers and getting stuff done. The extra flavour she adds to some of the Eustrin interactions is good - I'd like to see more of that kind of thing, since it makes re-exploring old areas feel fresh and rewarding. Punching an uncooperative goddess in the mouth also seems appropriately irreverent for a feisty leader of a pragmatic people. I guess it was probably in the stomach or similar, come to think of it, given the difference between Neranda's diminutive stature and Tertia's long-long frame :-P I was expecting a bit more involvement with Eustrin's political problems, so it was quite funny for Aram's agitations to be basically dismissed as irrelevant given Simon's power over the continent. I'm sure there's more to come on that side of things, but it's a good reminder that the party now has bigger fish to fry than mere geopolitical tensions. Combat balance seems OK to me with the exception of the much-discussed boss spider fight. The monsters in the Lonely Path aren't especially challenging, but they're kind of fitting for the territory, like a faded echo of Tertia's nature. By contrast, the spiders initially hit hard but go down fairly easy, which prepares the ground for the harder fights against the Tanurak-twisted ones.

Rachnera

Fun fact: When, in the sanctuary, someone asked Simon to just "call in his wife", I thought they were talking about Janine at first, which, in that context, was a bit puzzling. For a moment, I imagine that maybe Janine was a really good psychologist or something like that.

Definitely My Name

Skittering Nightmare fight notes in case anyone is still struggling: Simon / Vhala / Carina / Hilstara for the easiest fight without the disable synergy imo due to Hilstara soaking hits decently and freeing Carina to mass heal Vhala should be going first and wearing a Savant's Cloak for a relevant damage bump, ~100 per AoE to all 3 targets adds up Simon should be wearing IK Glove and Lustplate, which boosts his heal significantly. This is noted almost nowhere, as far as I can tell? Carina should be around 300 defense if possible, which allows her to take one (1) hit when your engine of buffs and debuffs is running Hilstara should be on buff maintainence (hold the line AND tactical eye) and Aegis Assault Vhala should be on debuff maintaintence and Arrow of Abstinence Carina should be mass healing or reviving Simon Simon should be mass healing or Incubus Striking or using King's Aura when you think someone might attack and not die Turn 1 success on Defensive Rain in at LEAST lowering agi on everything is critical, just reset if you don't get it tbh

DukeLeto7

Total trivia: On the Lonely Path map, some of the piles of rocks on the ground are being treated as foreground objects such that the player sprite steps on them they appear over the top of the sprite's feet. Kind of as if the rocks were a mist. I think map coordinates (079, 075) are an example but I don't have time to play through again to get a screenshot just now.

Zyrus

So I'm stuck at the point where the game asks me to 'untwist' the last door somewhere un the 'Eustrin section' of the map (lower half) and I cannot for the life of me find anything out of place against the visuals. What am I looking for?

cooke

So, is there any side content with Galvia? There seems to be some with Sx pillars, but i can't find it anywhere.

David

Very good update, it started a bit slow in the first part but the plot twist in the last half was as sudden as it was good. I don't really think the fight with the spiders needs to get nerfed, you just need a specific party and sinenergy skill to win it easily: it just took me three hours to figure it out.

DukeLeto7

I'm confused by the event code for the enemies in the Deepwilds Shrine map. It looks like it's encoding for the enemy groups available when you first explore the area are to be removed, and for two new groups to be added, but the switch being used is 3601 CHAPTER FIVE, which is always on when you first enter the Deepwilds Shrine. This may be me being stupid.

WaxerRed

Replayed some of the key moments in 48.1, spiders are still far and away the most challenging fight in the game so far, but no longer did I feel I was getting smeared on that first turn without a chance to fight back so it's probably a good compromise! Also I'm glad to see breeder Altina not only got a little dialogue but a full on little scene with the other elves, glad the girl is getting some love! Or...is rather not getting some baby making love from SImon but still.

Actual Personman

Greetings! The patch was great, but I had some feedback about the nightmare spiders and bosses more generally. When the bosses reach this level of difficulty, I feel as though I'm essentially playing at the Dragon Quest Casino. The bosses hit so hard that it quickly becomes obvious that you have to buff your own defense and debuff their attack. But that requires two turns of setup, during which time the boss must distribute his attacks just so, or they kill one of your party members and you're done for that run. Sure, you can try to stabilize again, but the other side of the coin here is that bosses now punish you extremely hard for trying to revive party members. Most difficult fights are a combination of being out-performed in terms of action economy, tankbusters (attacks capable of OHKO), and sweepers (high damage, all targets) - but of these, I think it's the liberal use of sweepers that might be the issue. Essentially, when the boss hits all targets every turn, and you have to be buffed and at full hp to survive it, getting someone back on their feet and staying on their feet becomes all but impossible (this is also exacerbated by the fact that healing spells get bonus turn speed, so getting a rez off before the heal is more difficult than it should be). Because recovery is all but impossible, I can only win if I don't lose anyone, and must now wait on the boss to distribute his attacks just so, letting me squeak by to turn 3 with everyone alive and all buffs up, and with enough HP to survive any combination of attacks. Essentially just pulling the lever and waiting for the 7's to line up. And, to a certain extent, I understand that this is RPGmaker combat and RNG is the spice that makes the savor. I don't have any problem with RNG. I guess I just feel like with recent bosses and content, you only get the one bite at the apple and then you're done. My guess is that bosses kick you in the shins for reviving because Simon has a spammable party-wide revive, but that's just conjecture. The work you do to make the fights in the game interesting and unique is obvious, so please don't misunderstand. I enjoy TLS, but redoing the same fight ten times in a row for the perfect run gets old at run 5.

Lamsey

Just finished a 0.48.1 run and didn't spot any new issues. I noticed that Tertia's sprite looks a little blurry, though. I may be able to do something to sharpen it a bit - I'll try to experiment with this tomorrow evening. The additions are good, but the thought occurred to me that there's a missed opportunity for an interaction where a Dwarren citizen says something which he definitely wouldn't say if the queen was there, leading to a subsequent reaction from Neranda once they're out of earshot. It'd be kinda like the inverse of Nalili's obliviousness when she's being not-so-incognito in the Orgasmic Capital. I'm not sure what interaction would best present such an opportunity, though. One thought I had was that the ore salesman says that the queen has banned the Aramites from the shop; if Neranda's in the party, maybe Nalili could use all of her usual brick-like subtlety to prompt him into praising the queen, and unwittingly make Neranda super-uncomfortable in the process. There are probably better possibilities, but hopefully that illustrates the idea at least. Music - the Eustrin dungeons in previous chapters have used "Dungeon2 RTP", and to me that track seems more fitting for Dwaregast-infested ruins than the current one. I think Dungeon9 would probably be the next-best fit out of the available tracks. I didn't notice much of a difference with the boss spider fight, but I did manage it on the second attempt, which was a lot quicker than previously. Not sure if that's due to the nerfs or just lucky RNG combined with prior knowledge. I logged my thoughts as I went through it, in case that's useful in terms of gauging the experience. First attempt: Simon and Robin are killed by multi-attacks in the first round; Carina is fine, Vhala's at 50%. Carina revives Simon next round, but he is instantly killed again, along with both Carina and Vhala. Game over. Second attempt: Simon and Robin are one-hit-killed in the first round by Dwarfkillers; Carina is at 50%, Vhala is fine. Carina revives Simon before being knocked out; Simon and Vhala survive. Simon then revives Carina and Robin; the former survives, the latter does not. By this point, Vhala's defensive rain has managed to land a few hits. I then manage to get everyone up to full health with a combination of Support Allies and Mass Heal, and Vhala manages to finish off the weakest enemy, but the boss' AOE attack still kills Robin outright and everyone else is left on 10-50% health at the end of the round. This is with full attack debuffs applied, but Vhala is the only one with any defensive buffs because everyone else has died at least once and Carina's been busy reviving/healing. From this point, it's a case of constant healing/reviving/debuffing, with Robin or Vhala occasionally getting to fire off a lance or anti-sex arrow to try and knock out the weaker enemies. It's difficult to get any buffs up because of the constant deaths, and the boss resists debuffs sufficiently that it's liable to get back to normal unless Vhala constantly spams Defensive Rain (I observed as many as five hits in a row without debuffing ATK). Eventually I get down to just the boss remaining, with party buffs and enemy debuffs fully applied. It's manageable from that point forward, but it's a tedious wait to get there. I actually had to use a *mana potion* on Vhala mid-fight. Jimmies status: rustled. TL;DR: it's still very hard to get buffs and debuffs up reliably, so survival is heavily dependent on lucky RNG, particularly in the first few rounds.
