There's enough stuff going on, I'm going to divide this post into appeals and thoughts about the upcoming period.

Support Me (if you want)

That animated cover up there? It's for the upcoming audiobook for The Brightest Shadow. I'll say more about it in the future, but for now, Podium wants me to spread it around. If you're interested in pre-ordering it, you can do so on Audible.com or a specific country link.

Meanwhile, I'm eligible for the r/fantasy Self-Published Novels contest. Anyone with a Reddit account can vote, though do note the rules:

https://old.reddit.com/r/Fantasy/comments/jabxs3/the_rfantasy_top_self_published_novels_voting/

I'm not going to win, but I have some votes already. Because the sub has over a million members, even getting lower on the list could bring new readers to my work.

There's other stuff that will be happening over the coming weeks/months, but those two are the only ones that are time-sensitive. On to general thoughts.

Taking a Break

As I've implied at various times, I think I need a break. My effort in 2020 to finally knock some long-standing projects off my plate had mixed success, in some cases recoiling on me by adding new continual draws on my time (mostly communicating with new artists). DStP is actually delayed primarily because of me for the first time since the project began, but I kept it on the backburner because I recognized I was near the limits of my bandwidth.

Unfortunately, a true break is impossible because I've just put too much in my schedule. I have three different book launches coming up soon, some of them determined by publishers instead of me. Handling that isn't hard, just draining, but dealing with all of it while trying to complete significant creative work is another thing.

What I think I need is a period of time where I can follow my creativity more freely, while dealing with all the communication and promotion that's been scheduled. I'm going to try to give myself significant freedom to follow my muse, but I'm not going to begin anything new. That is, I'll work on TLS/OEA/DStP at random as I feel like it, but not start anything new that will require work from Future Sierra.

The one exception might be trying to write some short stories, as they're generally done in a short period of time with no future obligations. I have some semi-experimental ideas I've wanted to explore, and maybe getting into them might be refreshing.

Following my creativity will likely involve working on TLS 0.55.0 some too. Launching into the whole update, especially updating so many NPCs, doesn't sound like fun right now, but some other stuff? There are investment returns, new harem scenes, and numerous little consequences. ^-^ It's nearly certain that there will be times when I feel like working on those, so I'll take pieces out of the open world update until I eventually just finish it up.

So there you have it, that's my plan. You can look forward to hearing from me in the regular weekly updates, but maybe some of them will just be a new piece of art or something, instead of an essay.

Belly97

Which of your books are self published?

Charred Heretic

A few weeks of art updates sounds really good, to be honest. I hope that work is as trouble-free as fate or fortune allows! Edit: Also, that lightning effect is super pretty.

Belly97

Also, I hope you have a good break/rest.

SYH

Huh. I know a Mikael Naramore who does audiobook production & narration. Neat.

Zaq Reman

I misread that at first as hoping she has a good breakfast and found myself in confused agreeement.

Dubsington

I see you have my wife's definition of "break": working differently for a while.

sierralee

I shall partake of the finest of breakfasts!

sierralee

I do intend to do some other stuff as well. I haven't done much gaming recently, and there are shows to catch up on.

snusnumrik

Resting is important! You deserve it.

SantaTheHutt

You know its OK to take a break and not do any work at all, right? You're not a machine. Relax, take some time for yourself.

Dubsington

Good!!! You need to love your job, and that means taking enough time off of it!

DukeLeto7

Quick POSSIBLE error report. The absence of an empty slot in either the non-combat or leader category is causing people on the wiki forums to speculate that Elleani is one of the 4 remaining tower walker other persons. I'm fairly sure there used to be another non-combat slot, and the Harem script is complicated and prone to causing errors... so I thought I'd apprise you of that line of speculation.

sierralee

An error in the script is likely, but I'm also okay with misdirecting some people.

DuckTogo

Mercy for Future Sierra.

Stijn Van Hove

Enjoy the break. 0.54 was great. Looking forward to the rest, whenever you feel like it.

Q-Riff

I have a question for the 2nd gathering. What was Hilstara doing? I checked no mention of her no dialog at all. She wasn't on the defence team, nor the infiltration, negotiation or Anak Team

sierralee

There is no ultra secret role Hilstara is playing, so if she really isn't on any of the teams, it's an error.

Decanter

Hilstara has dialogue around the Ravaging Conqueror scene and near the beginning when she says (ironically) that she's working out potential teams. The teams are: "Primary" - Robin, Ginasta, Uyae, Altina Investigation - Yarra, Aka, Dari, Qum Anak detail - Orilise, Vhala, Varia Empire negotiators - Riala, Megail, Lynine, Carina More limited roles are played by Orcent, Balia, Nalili, Iris, Wynn, Trin. Balia can't do much that isn't orc stuff, Nalili is busy liaising, Iris works on the culinary event, and I think the others are sort of on the "primary" team even if they aren't listed as such in the beginning and aren't always seen to be doing things. But Hilstara does nothing except get fucked by a Ravaging Conqueror, which is sort of out of character for her.

Charred Heretic

I figured most of the military stuff was just going to be orcish war-games. Orcent's got that sewed up nicely. Hilstara found a good niche for herself managing coordination among the various teams (I think that's she was doing, anyway. I could be wrong.). Personally, I'm just glad she's learning to delegate.

Anon

Good luck and enjoy your break Sierra! Don't want to overwork and burnout! Taking a break now and then from a creative project is so important for one's health.

sierralee

She may have failed to get on the team lists I put together while organizing, so I neglected her during scenes. Most likely she belongs on the primary team, but I don't know about making changes.

Decanter

Maybe she could hang around our chambers and react to things like some others do, something relatively token like that. Heretic: I think Hilstara is fine with delegation, else she couldn't have become second-in-command of a good merc outfit or led successful ops for Simon. Rather, I think what she struggles with is doing relatively nothing about important matters while others are actively working. Even veteran soldiers can struggle with that.

werewindle

Just have Hilstara greet the team back at the base with "yea sorry I couldn't go, but I had a succubus orgy promise to fulfill back in the Chalice States".

sierralee

I'm not going to radically alter any of the events, but I might give Hilstara some comments and/or throw her into one of the teams.

Seriathus

I'm sorry if this isn't exactly the right place to ask, but I was meaning to pose you a question: are there trans people in the world of TLS? And how would the shards work with them? The gender binary seems to be a metaphysically concrete thing in TLS. What of nonbinary people?

Decanter

Is there any way to answer this that won't upset someone?

DukeLeto7

The simplest solution might be for her to be in charge of physical security at the Doom King's quarters.

Lamsey

Patty will SMASH anyone who won't acknowledge his fabulous existence! Given that Esthera was able to bend a "male" shard to accept her female anatomy, I don't think that the fundamental forces of lust and purity are as concretely tied to gender in the TLS universe as they might appear on the surface. Another example would be that succubi are beings of lust while goddesses are beings of purity, yet both are exclusively female (as far as we know, unless the Anak's using all those Theosons to make himself into a goddess and further expand the list of characters who have secretly been Ivala all along). Speculatively, there might actually be some advantages for transsexual people in the TLS universe, since magic could offer a better approach to reshaping bodies than real-world surgery? I guess there might be limits to how many people would have access to that kind of high-end magic, though, since Aka and Wendis's transformations require a lot of research.

Seriathus

In a sense we could say that gender essentialism is baked into the current rules of the TLS verse, but they are vague rules that can be bent. (also, Patty is not trans, he's a man and identifies as a man, he just likes to dress like a maid :P ) I think that changing the shape of an existing body, working on easily available templates, would likely be easier than creating a new one from scratch to house a soul in (like with Wendis) or changing the fundamental substance a body is made of (like with Aka).

Finch

To add to Lamsey's speculation, there are some more commonly available body transformation stuff we have seen. Futa spells come to mind, and I know the Trin-like mage who was working with the Fucklord mentioned being threatened with genderbending spells. Those spells aren't quite what trans people would be looking form, of course. Being trans is not a fetish, and these seem to be more fetish focused. But I would imagine it wouldn't take too much work for a sufficiently motivated theoretical mage to create a gender-affirming version of those spells.

Seriathus

Oooh, right, good point. Could this mean that someone's metaphysical gender in the world of TLS is something that can be changed, and there would be theoretically some spell that could change one's gender even by the criteria of the laws of reality? So a woman could, rather than do what Esthera did and rewrite the essence of a shard to make it submit to her, change her own metaphysical gender to become an Incubus King? And a man a goddess? And potentially, would there be a way to create an entirely new gender?

sierralee

The universe of TLS is ultimately based on playing out the consequences of hentai logic, and that logic isn't kind to nuance. For example, intersex people are born at the normal rate for the population, and if they live ordinary lives it probably wouldn't ever matter, but if they run into sex-based magic they have a worse time of it, because the magic process is looking for duality. I haven't said it explicitly in-game, but Esthera actually did change herself along with changing her shard. With Tower magic, you can bend the rules, but generally not break them. Changing someone's metaphysical gender would be difficult up to a tipping point, then very easy as the natural system tries to put them in the opposite category. Creating a brand new gender would lead to backlash, however, given how it contradicts the universe's assumptions. As for a process to change sex without high end Tower magic, the closest equivalent is actually the Unpeople. It would be an expensive magical process with some risk, but you could change your body and then get reclassified as far as sexual magic is concerned.

Seriathus

So the laws of metaphysics of TLS are gender essentialist. Gotcha. Heh, maybe part of the massive changes Simon will do to the world, it might actually make it possible for nonbinary people to exist fully.

Aris Katsaris

(written before I saw Sierra Lee's response above) My headcanon: Exactly because gender seems to have a metaphysical basis, there's probably *more* ways that trans people exist than in ours. If in our world, "trans" means (simply put) that the biological and psychological senses of gender don't align -- causing dysphoria or even just a desire to be recognized at the opposite gender... In TLS's world: there are three factors to be considered, biological expression of gender, psychological expression of gender, metaphysical/magical expression of gender E.g. what if there are people who both *look* and *feel* male, but metaphysically/magically register as female? Or the other way around, the Empress may have made herself metaphysically/magically register as male to acquire an incubus shard, while still remaining physiologically and psychologically female? Any of the three aspects falling into disalignment with the other two (as the Empress perhaps is) would make a person 'trans' of sorts.

Dark Art

Please, please, please, please, pretty please with a cherry on top and ice cream at the bottom do not let TLS or other titles degenerate into political correctness for the effing sake of political correctness . I am sure I am not the only one who is very tired indeed of SJW aggressive "progressiveness". You've been extremely realistic with your approaches, maybe even conservative, well, as conservative as one could get with magic, succubi, orcs and the rest, but still. The world wasnt possible, but it was plausible. Thats why it is so much fun do dive into. Please keep it that way.

Seriathus

Dude, I have no idea how you managed to be so utterly blind to the themes TLS has, but I suggest you go replay it and ask yourself if you may have missed something.

Dark Art

Purely out of respect to our host here, I'll not reply in the same tone as you have and very politely ask you to take your suggestions, roll them up tightly and put them in your pocket. If you wanna start the usual SJW shitslinging - please do it elsewhere.

Seriathus

You're the only one who came in complaining about the fact that people dared even talk about this. We were perfectly civil before you started complaining that we were talking about trans people in the game, trying to police what WE are allowed to talk about because you don't like it. And you have the gall to accuse me of shit slinging when that's literally all you've done?

Dark Art

*Facepalm* SJW's world famous ego.... It never stops to amaze me. I'll just leave it as "no comments" and my bad for forgetting the old saying: dont wanna smell like "it", dont touch "it". Sapienti sat.

Pheebor

Seriathus, if gender questioning/nonbinary were incorporated now at this late hour, it would feel a bit out of place, I believe. It would look tacked on. That is because there have been no hints of any character who showed any signs of not identifying with their actual biological gender in all the 40+ hours of gameplay so far. So I think what you're asking is that it be included now. But unless there is a compelling case that that theme would improve the story, I am not seeing a great reason to do that. There are already many, many balls in the air. I'm not saying its a bad theme, by any means, but it is one that can introduce many complexities of its own, and thus it probably deserves its own game with the bandwidth to really explore the issue.

Seriathus

I didn't demand Sierra to put in a nonbinary/trans character in the game RIGHT NOW, I just asked for a clarification of how transness would work in the TLS world. I would've been okay with just a "dunno and I don't feel comfortable with tackling the subject because I just don't know enough about it", I only got confrontational with one jackass who decided that even just mentioning the word was somehow going too far. If you'll notice, I didn't blow up at Sierra after she clarified that the way that the world of TLS itself works is not particularly friendly to nonbinary people.
