New release is out! Get it at the blog:

http://the-last-sovereign.blogspot.com/2021/01/tls-0552-public-release.html

You can find links and release notes there, but I wanted to copy over some thoughts that will be relevant to patrons, plus a question.

So, this release... I think it's a pretty good broad update, with a ton of content of many different types. However, I think that it should be better. There were a few ideas I didn't implement, patrons made some good suggestions that weren't easy work, and there are some potential improvements that I have in mind.

Therefore, I think I'm going to break my usual pattern with this one and put out a version 0.55.3 later with expanded content. I feel this is better than trying to flesh that stuff out into its own update (it'd be too small) or put it off until version 0.56.0 (it'd over-extend the dev period). Hopefully this is the best way to maintain momentum and people enjoy the new content, which I'll try to list carefully so everyone can find it specifically.

Until then, enjoy! I don't intend to change the balance of current events, but new opportunities in the update might change what choices you make, so I'd suggest keeping an earlier save.

Completely unrelated: has anyone seen Crimson Gray show up anywhere lately? Recently it's started selling an unusually high number of copies and I can't figure out why. The analytics show direct navigation from Steam instead of outside links, but I wonder if a YouTuber or somebody covered it. I figure there must be some reason it's suddenly selling like a new game again.

Sounds good. Any idea how long it will take to put out 55.3?

Malidica

So for those of us that scoured 55.0, is there anything new we should know about other than a few RP additions?

sierralee

I'll be frustrated if patrons don't have it by next weekend, but I may be frustrated. It's been a rough week.

sierralee

That would be 0.55.3+. This one is just cleaned up for the public release (though there is the new map).

Malidica

Ok, and i assume you fixed up the bugged smuggling investment? :)

Decanter

That was already fixed in 0.55.1.

Dark Art

Hey Sierra, you are describing TLS as "Hours of Gameplay: 40+". Well, I gotta say that you are nasty, nasty liar. I just finished my run of 55.0 and I my playing time is over 110 hours. Sure, I tend to wander around, talk to every NPC and revisit everywhere after each major update, but still.... I think you do TLS a massive disservice by saying its only measly, pathetic 40+ hours long.

sierralee

All objective bugs/typos should be fixed in this version, though I could always have made an oversight.

Malidica

Right, but we never saw 0.55.1 :P It was fixed, cute scene with Nalili :)

Treeman4

Get it out if you can, if not, no need to be frustrated. We know you try your best

Malidica

Yeah, from my first (88) and second (81) runs i think that should be updated to say 80+ by now.

Decanter

That little plus sign is doing a lot of ass-covering right now.

Decanter

SL updated the 0.55.0 post with the new links to 0.55.1. This should have generated an email notification, though it's possible you aren't set up to receive those or your spam filter catches them.

sierralee

At some point I tried to update it to 50+, but there are a lot of descriptions. In any case, there's actually a potential negative to putting the number too high: players might assume the game is a grindfest or otherwise padded. I've seen a number of people who already expressed disbelief that their hours were spent on content, having expected worse. My hope is that 50+ will communicate "game big" without triggering disbelief, though I don't really have any strong evidence of this.

DutchieD00dle

Dude, I'm on 157 hours, and I'm still on my first run. Granted, there's quite a number of AFK-hours in there, but holy hell there's a lot of content.

Malidica

If the goal is to not dissuade folks who enjoy long games but prefer to avoid grindfests then shouldn't the solution be to say "80+ hours of ACTUAL content, not grinding." I know if i read that it'd grab my attention in a very positive way cause yeah, i don't enjoy grindfests, but big big games with big big story, sign me the fuck up!

Aris Katsaris

the text on your blogpost says "TLS 0.54.1", btw

Dark Art

> ... potential negative to putting the number too high: players might assume the game is a grindfest or otherwise padded.... Ah, I see. I think its definitely worth mentioning that TLS became not just a game, but an interactive epic saga, maybe mention something like "40-60 hours", but I see what you mean. I guess 40+ is good enough of a bait to get someone to give the title a try and get hooked :)

Runcible Technician

I've been looking but I have no idea why people spiked getting the game. Except that it's good, you know. Glad that other people are seeing that too.

Starbomba

Well, your post just reminded me that even though i got Crimson Gray a looong time ago (roughly 2016? I dunno), i never got it on Steam for those achievements. Also, i only got one of the routes out of it IIRC, so what better time to get that now, and the sequel of course.

Decanter

Malidica: Even if you say that, many people assume marketing copy will be dishonest to some degree. Even if they don't assume that, there are different degrees of "actual content" and a long game (or book, show, etc) is sometimes long because the creator didn't know which parts weren't so great and should be cut, even if they weren't intentionally adding filler. There is also a mindset out there that goes "I don't want to commit to something really long unless it's really good" and for them too it's better for the length to be a pleasant surprise. Also, if you overshoot your estimate it feels more dishonest than if you undershoot. Though this is more of a concern for games that cost actual money.

Desertopa

As far as Crimson Gray goes, there were Let's Plays (I don't know if you followed them or they contacted you,) but the most recent one seems to have been about half a year ago, so that doesn't seem to explain anything. Some quick googling only seems to confirm that it's *not* anything obvious on my end either. Do you have any information on what countries you're getting hits from? One possibility is that something brought the game to the attention of a foreign language audience, and you probably wouldn't be able to uncover that unless you knew what language to search in.

JWaterdoc

What is the difference between the Public and Paetron? I've upgraded to Paetron and haven't played the new stuff yet cause you suggested maybe I should wait for the next launch. But I used to play the public 53.

JWaterdoc

Also for Crimson Gray; Steam Reviews from new customers and reviews from other titles namely TLS recent public releases, are what garnered the attention and consumption. Reviewers are saying things like "Worth the price" "Offers a lot of choices" etc. Oh and "Get the patch"

WaxerRed

The only difference between public and patreon is patrons get to play a week early. Which was last week, now the two versions are the same.

sierralee

I do have country information, but in this case it's overwhelmingly American. It's also not completely inexplicable (in that it coincided with a big sale), it's just much more than I expect for one of the annual sales.

sierralee

WaxerRed gave you the right answer. Expect to get emails about patron-only versions!

sierralee

Yeah, hopefully! As I mentioned above, it did coincide with a sale, so maybe this time the game just took off in the algorithm for some reason.
