This was a significant week! I've gone from chipping away at pieces of a looming update to feeling like I'm moving on a linear path toward a clear endpoint. Though I feel good about the work I've finished, I worry about the overall process so far.

Specifically, I haven't yet built up momentum and reached a state of flow in my work. Now, I can still finish via discipline, as I did with the previous update, but this has a cost. In the past, if I cleared away distractions and focused on something, I usually reached a highly rejuvenating state of work. I can think of reasons why my progress so far hasn't been as smooth as I'd hoped, but I can't be sure, and the simple fact is that it's still slow by my standards. I like this less than anyone else, believe me.

Not sure how to conclude. I don't want to switch gears but I don't like the idea of beating through another update with my skull. I intend to keep focusing for now and see how much I can get done, but since the week after that would have distractions again, I might have to shift gears.

Weeks when my primary work isn't going well often mean more time spent on past reports. Thanks to Innocuous, WaxerRed, and thisgamething for reporting issues and Decanter, Lamsey, and DukeLeto7 for helping reduce the amount of my time these ate up. Though not hugely noticeable, this sort of work is essential for making the game feel more polished.

I would say do what's best for you, while I would love to see an update soon, that may not be the most productive use of your time. If focusing elsewhere, and then coming back around makes for a happier and more productive SL, then I'm all for what works.

WaxerRed

Not liking the idea of completing your goal ala bashing your skull through it? Well best maid Patty probably would disagree, but hey whatever works for you!

BleBle

There's another option for you, taking a week off. But do what you must. I wonder what you woud do if you change gears. Changing maps in OEA wouldn't be very exciting for me. Good luck!

Mycroft

Forgive me if you already answered to this before, but why such a hurry ? It's not as if we cannot wait a month or two before the next update. I do not remember, since I started backing you up, seeing you taking hollydays. At least not for more than a week. In france, two week of consecutive hollydays a year are mandatory. And it help a lot to be more efficient once we come back. I'm sure that most of your baker will agree that you deserve hollydays, given the impressive work you already have done. I think we can wait.

DankPotatoes

Honestly, shoutout to those guys you mentioned. Their volunteer work often doesn't get enough appreciation

Mycroft

You're joking, right ? If not this comment is kind of rude and very insensitive. An update a month, especially given the size and quality of the update is a LOT of work. The previous one was especially complex. And there is also other projects. Sierra Lee work a lot, and the deadline she set for herself seam hard to meet. I think that those deadline should be extended.

sierralee

I suspect that taking a week for something else might have been wise a month ago, but that time has passed and I'm afraid it would only distract me.

DukeLeto7

I just want to reiterate that I'm always impressed with your work ethic, and wish I were more capable of emulating it.

sierralee

I promised that 0.58.0 would come soon, back when I was hoping to roll directly from one war update to another. I'll be happy to reach that point, since the next several updates after that will be less complex and thus easier to juggle. Maybe setting a slower schedule would have been wiser, but I publicly committed myself to this approach. I've never really taken holidays or weekends in part because I love my work and in part because I've needed to push hard to make a creative career work. Possibly some unexamined Protestant Work Ethic in there; it's rare for Americans to get two weeks of time off. Usually working is rejuvenating for me, so this last draining period was (I hope) unusual. JJS, it's not accurate to say the last update came out in July. The weeks of bugfixing and polishing that lead up to the public update may not be exciting for you, but they're busy weeks of work for me. That said, I hope the update will be out in September.

Mycroft

I know that you love your work, it show, and I can only imagine how hard it is to make a creative career work. But believe me when I say that one can love his work (I do) and still need to do something else from time to time. I'm a staff representative and as such, I have seen some of my colleagues having a burnout. Most of them loved their work. I hope you are not there, but please take care of yourself.

Lamsey

Sierra's idea of "taking time off" is "spending time working on another project", from what I can tell. Don't forget that this year has also seen multiple new versions of OEA and DStP, not to mention multiple book launches across two different series. I'm beginning to wonder if SL has some sort of time compression device to allow her to keep so many balls in the air. Come to think of it, that's a neat setup for a dystopian story... the invention of time compression technology meaning that everyone needs to work multiple jobs to keep up, so we end up with less free time, not more :-/

Sion

Totally understand not being happy with pace by your own standards but I gotta say it's really impressive the work you accomplish and I'm more than happy to support the work you do

DukeLeto7

I just noticed something I hadn't previously in the Warden of the South logic while reviewing the wiki page. (Fulminato took point on that update.) In the Tak'Kan Hall of Order you talk to Grubbak about acquiring legitimacy, there's a check on self switch A that dings you -1 Legitimacy if it is on. Self switch A is flipped to on by the mandatory vote tabulation scene in the Erosian Prelude, and is therefore always on unless someone does something truly bizarre with a save editor. This looks buggish. It appears Fulminato documented it but didn't ask you about it. (For reference, event 019,014, code page 4, last conditional branch before Grubbak gives a verbal evaluation of their contribution.)

sierralee

Known but never mentioned publicly. This is more an oddity than a bug, effectively just an irrational way to affect the difficulty of that check because I didn't notice it was required at first.

DukeLeto7

I'm not sure integer variable math can be truly irrational.

DukeLeto7

I'll just show myself out.

Innocuous

Just wanted to say thanks for all the work you put into your games, I'm glad that I'm able to help in some way because I don't have the same technical knowledge as some of the others. Definitely the community of people here is cool, and I also appreciate all the people who are contributing their expertise to these projects. I'm looking forward to the next update whenever and whatever it may be. Thank you.

Donastray

I'm sorry you are down and out, even though you are doing a really impressive job and you are, in my opinion, absolutely spectacular! I don't know if things have changed much in the past week, but I hope you are doing better.
