When I returned home, there was nothing left.

I stood in the middle of an unrecognizable street— the dull gray color of concrete stretching out as far as I could see. There was no grass. There were no trees. And there was no color, but that of the flashing signs atop the towering buildings.

A crowd bustled around me. Each and every one of their figures wore unfamiliar clothing. The once blue skies were now permanently overcast with dark clouds of smog, and rain poured unceasingly into the world below. I strode forward, entering a gated enclosure.

Even though I had escaped my damnation, I found no salvation here.

I arrived at my destination, coming to a halt as my ragged clothing blew with the wind. My gaze landed upon a small monument of stone. I read the words inscribed on its surface. And all around me, these tiny monoliths uniformly littered the level ground.

I closed my eyes as I raised my head.

A moment had passed for me, but the world moved on. Nothing here remained.

And I was gone once again.

Author's Notes:

I am strongly considering adding this as a chapter 0 to start off the ebook/audiobook version of Amelia. What do you guys think?

No spoilers in the comments beyond chapter 70.

37s Chapter 0 for the level 0 hero

Wensber

I liked it. It answered a few questions on whether she could go home.

Alexey G

Though, it might be better to be part of vol 2 in some way or form. As it is in this volume this subject is touched. In vol 1 people thus far believed that she couldn't travel between realms.

Falcon

I like keeping it vague and revealing it later. For sure would make an interesting start to a later volume.

Kevin Caffrey

I wasn’t too bothered by it, but I had found myself wondering both why she seemingly had no motivation to go home and whether she could if she wanted to. I think this chapter at the start would have avoided those issues!

Neil Foster

So is this before or after she came to Vacuos? I'm a little confused.

Aclys

This is really cool, if put at the start of vol 1 then it answers questions people wont know to ask for a while. Putting it at the start of vol 2 works also.

Raquna

I could see it either being a good inclusion for the first chapter, or having it be something she reminisces about in a fairly early chapter during some downtime

Cold_Fischl

A short but sweet view into the depressing tale of Amelia. I’d say you could put this either at the beginning or as something you read during an interlude.

Kristeen Livesay

Seems good, clears up a few inconsistencies on why she doesn’t go back to earth and establishes that she is indeed a worldwalker.

Josh Cothran

I like it. Because she’s so convinced there’s nothing back at Earth for her. Now we know she actually *knows*

lenkite

Can't she get some [Modern Stuff] from earth by going on a [Shopping Trip] ?

jacob

honestly i think its a good thing to have but it also changes the perception of her and her actions her knowing out right that her family is dead is very different then her thinking that it is a real possibility

Josh Cothran

This also opens up the possibility of her just opening a rift for Kal back to Earth if that’s where he’s from?

Sansvoid

It solves the problem of how she knows earth moved on, but creates a new question of why/how she went to vacuos
