Use case for group payments in Messenger: I planned my brother's entire bachelor party in Messenger last year. I paid for the entire thing with my credit card and split the total 8 ways after it was over. Everyone sent me Interac email transfers, which worked well; but had I been able to just pop the total into the group chat, which I already had, to get paid, it would have saved a step.
