The midday sun burned high overhead, white-hot and merciless. Anya was visiting her new boyfriend Mark’s home for the first time—a humble house on his family’s farm. He had recently moved back in with his parents, and Anya didn’t judge; she’d had to move back in with her mom, too.

She was taking a walk around the property. The fields stretched out endlessly, the tall grass swaying in the dry breeze. Then she started to feel weird. She sat hunched, her body trembling, burning.

Her skin burned. A deep, feverish heat rolled through her muscles, making her tremble. It started as an itch, a subtle prickle along her arms, her legs, but then it crawled, spreading in waves of fire. She scratched at herself, her nails raking across her skin—only to feel something soft beneath her fingertips.

Fur.

A strangled cry left her lips as she yanked at her shirt, her fingers fumbling with the buttons. Too hot. Too tight. The fabric clung to her damp skin, suffocating. She tore at it, ripping the thin cotton open, exposing her heaving chest. Beneath her trembling hands, patches of short, bristly fur spread like wildfire over her stomach, her ribs, creeping up her throat like a living infection.

“What the fuck is happening to me?” she whimpered, her voice hoarse.

Her jeans were digging into her thighs. Her legs ached, pulsing with a pressure that built beneath her skin, stretching, reshaping. She cried out and wrenched the jeans down her hips, her breath hitching as she saw her calves—elongating, muscle and bone warping like melting wax. She kicked her shoes off and saw her feet distort, toes fusing, blackening, hardening into cloven hooves.

The grass brushed against her exposed body, the sensation unbearably sharp. Her skin wasn’t skin anymore—it was a coat of soft, tawny fur, spreading over her arms, her stomach, her breasts.

Now her face started to hurt.

She reached up, fingers grazing something that shouldn’t be there. The geometry was wrong. Her stomach turned.

Her nose was big.

It jutted from her face, large and soft, stretching wider than it should, her nostrils yawning open with every shuddering breath. The skin was thick, damp, textured, something not human.

She gasped—”Mmmrph”—but the sound came low, vibrating deep in her throat.

Her hands flew back to her nose, desperate to press it down, to flatten it—but it only flared wider at her touch, her breath dragging in deep, snorting pulls she couldn’t control.

“N-no—” Her voice warped, thick on her tongue.

Her ears twitched, flicking at unseen noises. She reached up and felt them—longer now, furred, alien.

Then came the pressure.

A dull ache bloomed at the top of her skull, pressing outward, heavy, solid. She whimpered, clutching at her head, feeling something push through, two hard, smooth points curving gently from beneath her hair.

Horns.

She was growing horns.

Anya shook her head violently and snorted. The movement felt natural, like shaking flies away.

“No, no—MOOOO!”

The sound ripped from her throat, loud, throaty, uncontrollable. She clapped her hands over her mouth, horrified. Her massive nose twitched, her nostrils flexing wide. She could smell everything—the dirt, the grass, the sweat on her own skin.

The thought came unbidden: The grass smells good.

She shuddered, forcing herself to her stand—only to stumble. Her balance was off, her body heavier. She turned wildly, searching—and saw him.

Mark.

He stood at the edge of the field, watching her.

Not running to help. Watching.

Her nostrils flared again—deep, instinctual, desperate—and she smelled him, too. But the scent didn’t calm her. It sent a cold bolt of dread through her stomach.

“You knew,” she bellowed, voice thick, barely her own.

Mark stepped forward, his face unreadable. “I’m sorry,” he said, but there was no panic in his voice. No shock.

Anya staggered toward him, her own body betraying her. “What did you do to me?!” she tried to scream, but the last word dissolved—“M-MMMOOOOOOOO!”
