I walked briskly through the narrow alley, eager to get out of the sketchy corridor and back to the main street. A door slammed open just a few yards ahead of me. Out stumbled a woman, her silhouette jagged against the faint glow spilling from inside. She wore dark clothes—a hoodie and pants that blended into the shadows—but it was her face that stopped me cold.

Her nose was enormous, protruding unnaturally, the nostrils flaring wide like those of a panicked animal. She snorted, a guttural, wet sound that echoed off the walls. Her blonde bangs clung to her forehead, stuck with sweat. Her eyes locked onto mine, wide and desperate, but there was something wild in them.

“Run,” she rasped, her voice low and urgent, trembling with fear or effort—I couldn’t tell. She took a step toward me, her hands shaking. “I can’t stop it. You have to go—now.” Her jaw ripped forward, dragging her huge nose and mouth with it.

I stumbled back, my heart pounding. “What’s happening to you?” I shouted, but she shook her head violently, her snorts growing louder, more animalistic.

“The transformation,” she gasped, her voice breaking, deepening. “It’s too late for me, but you—you can still get away. Please!”

Her words hung in the air, heavy and final, as her nostrils flared again, and I heard a crack, like her bones were breaking. She screamed and dropped to all fours. I didn’t wait to see more. I dialed 911 as I bolted past her, her desperate cries fading behind me.
