Jenna’s scream tore through the empty studio, echoing off the cold walls like a warning siren. She clutched her face, eyes wild, nostrils flaring wide and glistening unnaturally. Her nose was swollen, throbbing. A hard ache pulsed between her eyes as the bone shifted beneath her skin.
“What the hell is happening!?” she shrieked.
But the words already sounded off—thicker, slurred, like her tongue was too big for her mouth. Her pupils flicked from side to side, trying to process her reflection in the mirror: her ears had pushed outward, splitting with tufts of bristly hair and reshaping into stubby, velvet-covered cow ears. The sight made her stumble back.
Then came the horns.
They popped through the sides of her scalp with a sickening crack, curling upward slowly, her scream peaking again into a high-pitched wail. She grabbed one, tried to yank it free, but it only pulsed warmly in her grip like it had always belonged there. Her breath hitched—shallow, frantic.
She was losing it. Her voice broke into furious, guttural shouts as she stumbled backward, fists pounding her forehead. “STOP—MAKE IT STOP!” she shrieked, thrashing like a cornered animal. Her blue eyes burned with rage and terror, darting wildly around the room as if she'd find an exit from her own skin. She punched the mirror. Screamed again. Her face twisted into something beyond fear—pure panic, primal and raw.
But then something inside her slipped.
Her jaw went slack, opened too wide. Drool began to leak down her chin. Her hands trembled.
The pressure in her head changed.
She blinked hard. Her lips twitched.
Then her gaze drifted… a little off.
She tried to focus, tried to speak again, but instead her tongue lolled out, heavy and wet. It hung there like it had a mind of its own. She moaned, confused. Her eyebrows twitched with one last flicker of panic… then softened. Her eyes rolled back.
“Uh-huhhh…” she mumbled, voice hollow.
She went cross-eyed slightly as she stared down her swollen nose, nostrils twitching. A thick strand of spit dangled from her lip. She tried to raise her hand to wipe it—but only half-lifted it before letting it flop back down.
“Mmmrrrhh…”
Her thoughts—sharp only moments ago—had slowed to sludge. She felt warm. Her heart no longer pounded. She blinked again and giggled—though it came out like a half-snort.
There was still a large shard of the broken mirror there. She could see her mutated face. But it didn’t bother her anymore. Her tongue slid out again. She swayed slightly, nostrils flaring lazily.
There was no rage left. In fact, she had almost no thoughts at all.
