She tugged you by the hand through the trees, past thorny brush and into the shadowy quiet of the woods. You stumbled along, tripping over roots, guided only by the sound of her giggling. It was dusk when you heard the chirp of frogs and the gentle lapping of water.

“Okay,” she whispered. “This is it.”

You blinked at the pond in front of you — in a strange little clearing brimming with lily pads, fireflies, and thick green reeds. The air was humid and heavy with an earthy scent. She stood at the edge, her bare feet sinking into the mud. She began to undrëss.

“I used to come here a lot but it’s been awhile,” she said. “It’s where I first… changed.”

Before you could ask what she meant, she stepped into the pond.

The water reached her knees, then her waist. She closed her eyes, let out a long breath, and made a strange sound, like a croak echoing through her throat. Her body began to shift.

You gasped as her skin shimmered green, freckles multiplying over her shoulders. Her face pushed forward subtly, nostrils widening, lips parting to reveal a long, slick tongue that slipped from her mouth like a ribbon of flesh. Her eyes bulged outward, wet and glassy, catching every shimmer of light.

“This is what I am,” she said, her voice now low and rounded, with a gentle rasp like rain on leaves.

You were frozen, not out of fear, but awe.

“You’re beautiful,” you blurted out, catching yourself somewhat by surprise.

She blinked those massive eyes and smiled, her tongue slipping briefly back in before flopping out again. “I had a feeling you’d think so.”

Lily pads floated around her shoulders. A drop of water rolled down her nose. She leaned closer, and her tongue flicked the air.

“Stay with me awhile,” she said. “There’s more I want to show you.”

You stepped into the pond, the mud cool between your toes, the water rippling as you moved toward her strange, amphibious embrace.
