I don’t know how long I’d been staring at the bathroom mirror before I realized I’d stopped breathing. My mouth was open, lips parted in disbelief — no, in horror. The reflection that looked back at me wasn’t entirely mine anymore. It still had my eyes, wide and trembling, green. But everything else…

I touched my face with shaking hands. My nose had swollen, stretched, pushed forward from my face. It wasn’t a nose anymore. It was a snout. Fleshy and thick, with wide nostrils that flared every time I exhaled. I could feel every movement of it — the way it jutted out, how the weight of it changed the balance of my whole head. My skin felt tender there, sensitive. The cool air stung against the bare, pinkish edges of the nostrils.

I gave an involuntary snort, and the sound echoed too loud in the small room.

Fur prickled along my jawline next. I clawed at it — light brown, soft but coarse — pushing up my collar to see if it was spreading. It was. My skin felt tight, itchy, and wrong, like it was being rewoven from inside out. As I watched in the mirror, a fine fuzz raced up my neck and bloomed across my chest. It shimmered under the light like velvet.

I wanted to scream, but my throat caught on the sound. Instead, a harsh bray escaped me. Raw and bestial.

And then my ears…

Oh god, the ears. It felt like my skull was splitting open. Not from pain — not sharp pain — but a horrible stretching. A pulling. My ears pushed upward with a force that seemed to yank on my whole scalp, and I could feel them grow. Longer. Thicker. Furred. They twitched on their own. I could hear the soft rustling of my hair brushing against the base of them. I could hear everything more clearly — the hum of the bathroom light, the faint tap of a distant pipe. My ears pivoted instinctively, and I whimpered.

I looked at myself again.

A donkey’s face stared back, still me in some buried way, but transformed. And the worst part?

A part of me… liked the way I looked. The way it felt.

God help me. I don’t know if I want it to stop.
