It started in my face, my nose. A burning pressure, like someone just grabbed it and started pulling as hard they could. I tried to cover it with my hands, but the flesh just kept pushing, lengthening, sagging down. I could feel every nerve firing in it, especially when the sensitive tip brushed against my clothes. It was getting hard to breathe.

My jaw ached—sharp pain splitting at the corners of my mouth. I screamed, but the sound broke into a choking sob as hard ridges forced their way forward. Tusks. I could feel them jutting, dragging the skin of my lips tight. Then my ears stretched wide at the sides of my head, skin flapping down past my shoulders. I could feel them moving on their own, twitching with every sound, air rushing across their broad surfaces. All I could hear was the heavy thud of my own heartbeat.

Then the weight came. My arms swelled, muscle and hide stacking over bone. Wrinkles creased the new bulk, folds pressing together, damp with sweat. I dropped to my hands because I was getting too heavy, I physically couldn’t stand up anymore. My trunk dragged across the ground, smearing tears and mucous in damp streaks.

And all I could think about was my boyfriend. What if he saw me like this? Would he even believe it was me anymore, crawling on the floor, streaked with mascara, elongated nose dangling? My face—my body—everything he loved is gone. Replaced by a fucking beast.

The pain was one thing. The weight, the twisting, the burning stretch of skin—I could endure that. But the humiliation… the thought of him seeing me like this, of him recoiling from me, never touching me again—that was worse than any of it. I wanted to hide. I wanted to disappear. But where would you hide an elephant?
