I totally get the frustration and disbelief you felt with the orphan comment! In no way do I think the number of biological parents you have with you should be a factor into your personality and who you are as a person. But unfortunately that is a very old fashioned mindset, even in the brown community. Kids who are from single parent households (regardless if it's because of a death or divorce) are seen as "incomplete" and have flaws. Its portrayed even through media- if a child ever does anything bad and people find out they don't have a parent(s), that's what they blame. As someone who comes from a single parent household, and who has relatives that are very traditional, it's stuff that I've experienced first hand.
