Let’s talk about Fumes, it’s in Early Access! Also: Shadow Labyrinth, IGN’s big user study, the Roblox nightmare, the new PS5 firmware beta, Donkey Kong, Sony going after Tencent’s Horizon: Zero Dawn clone, and yes, even more.

Robloxs is fucked! I’m pretty sure the state should take my child off of me for letting him play it.😂 but if I didn’t I would never get any quiet lol

It piss me off that he plays it so much because I have all the “good” video games for him to play but he wants to play with his friends

Edit: never mind, somehow my podcast app switched my feed from the Patreon feed to the regular feed. Unfollowing and refollowing the Patreon feed is back to being ad free. Weird.

Jeff, your Roblox talk is so on point. It’s taking over gaming with the youth and the point your brought up last week about what that means for the future of gaming a decade down the line is scary. For the past three weeks all my kids have talked about is GROW A GARDEN. We have a switch 2, a PS5, 3 gaming pcs, a steam deck….but no lets play Grow a garden. My kids also have the ability to play Roblox on a console or on a pc but NO. They must play on their 5 inch screens twisting their fingers into pretzels. It looks so miserable but they love it. I also teach middle school. None of my kids were talking about Switch 2…they didn’t even care about Fortnite coming back to iPhone which would have been a huge deal with my students 5 years ago. But no, they’re all talking about the latest “oby” or “tycoon” that they’re playing. As a 45 year old dude that started playing on the NES in ‘85 Roblox makes me feel like I’ve lost the plot. It doesn’t even feel like gaming? In someways it feels parasocial because much of it is connected to popular YouTubers as you said. With that said, my kids have been playing Roblox for years and I’ve never once been asked for robux. I do think Covid played a huge part in Roblox’s growth. I saw it first hand how Roblox turned into the defacto communication and social media platform for my 7th graders during that time. Wild stuff.

I’m in the same place with my 3 kids brother. As I said above it’s almost like Baby’s First Social Media Platform as opposed to gaming. I feel like they use the same psychology to rope kids in and keep them locked in. And where parents are mindful about children accessing social media(most) I know many responsible parents who don’t see Roblox in that light when it really is. Roblox is also communist. Everyone has access, it runs on your palm pilot, etc.

The entire entertainment and collectables industry is moving into a gambling/pay to play style. Companies are abusing the addictive personalities they've created.

Very interesting. Always curious to hear from teachers who tend to have their finger on the pulse a bit more with what the children are up to. 'Roblox doesn't feel like gaming'. Huh. I see what you mean, you're kinda right 🤔 There's probably a difference between the kids who play Roblox (as more of a 'social space'??) and the kids who like "Video Games"? I suppose there's still plenty of kids who want to sit in front of a big television and play some very authored content with high production values, but perhaps the lure of what Roblox offers is becoming stronger these days? I think Jeff sort of mentioned this in another episode, that maybe a lot of the kids who eventually grow out of Roblox won't go on to 'real' video games, they'll do other stuff, like play football or something 🤷‍♂️

Michael Palmieri

This is an accurate take. All kids play Roblox not all kids play Borderlands.

Children continue to be just as stupid as ever, and sadly companies have started to take advantage of that even more.
