I had the opportunity to speak with Nil Köksal of As It Happens on CBC Radio One today. The show is available now, and you can find me around the 38-minute mark of the above link, talking about the hard science that has powered the last three-ish years of ranking NES games. Thanks to Jonathan Ore for connecting me with them on this important topic.

Hard to believe this project is almost finished, it's been a very long road to get to this point. I keep wondering if I'll have anything "smart" to say about this once it's finally done and I'm just not sure. There are plenty of really interesting observations that I've stumbled into along the way--the large cluster of games that sound like they fell out of a C64, to name one--but I think you've probably heard most of those by now.

The science will continue. It must. Thank you all for funding this incredibly important science and I hope to see you there next Friday when we wrap up this first chapter. As someone who has had decades of "you must cover the new releases" beaten into him by The Job, it's been very enlightening and rewarding to see this through.

The journey began with the simple question "Are NES games still good" and I am curious how exactly one answers that question. How many people in 2026 would call Mega Man 2 a good game worth playing? Is it just us oldheads?

I remember listening to As It Happens at the dinner table as a kid; I would have been a lot more engaged if they had guests talking about ranking NES games.

I was driving from Calgary to Medicine Hat earlier today and caught the interview. It was a little surreal to say the least. You went to Cut Man first, as an example for gaining the power from a robot king Interesting 🤔

Great interview! Now did I miss it when I searched the Science page or is Super Mario 3 one of the four games left? 😮

Funny how Captain Skyhawk wound up landing right in the middle of all this.

You hardly need my approval, but I always appreciate how you comport yourself in these more “general audience” settings. You do yourself, and the industry, credit.
