As Sega gets mired in expansion hardware and the Saturn, Nintendo tries to make themselves cool again by yelling at a 16-year-old boy for a couple of hours and attempting to throw game journalists onto a train for several days. Jeff Gerstmann and Glenn Rubenstein discuss all that and more!

I totally understand when you said "when I went to Vegas for a week, that as the last time I wanted to go to Vegas." I had the exact same experience. Three days at most, that place is so weird and sad if you aren't drunk the entire time.

Along with Nintendo of Japan having a more iron grip on what gets done I think also the core Nintendo developers were way more well rounded when it came to making games that justified tech. I'm not the biggest Starfox person but it could have easily been another run of the mill shooter with SuperFX tacked onto it whereas Sega feels like they would just throw the tech to the wolves and hope that some third party would pick up the slack. Or rather their in-house developers were too spread thin to build a library. Everything at Sega just seemed really rocky, willing to take a lot of risks but also scattered between US and Japan. I will say Sega developed some really cool IPs during the Saturn/Dreamcast era. It's very easy to imagine rebooting a lot of them and they have in a sense but really just are banking on Sonic.

Nintendo flying 16 year old Glenn to their HQ just to yell at him is maybe the most fucked up thing I have ever heard about any video game company. And that train ride junket sounded kinda terrible. I had always assumed it was an awesome experience for the people involved. 90s Nintendo PR had some idiots on the payroll.

I'll say it again. Love the pod. Hate patreons video player. Lame paying 15 cad a month so i have to watch on a shitty player with broken resume and no ability to cast to any device. 😔

The remake of Space Quest 1 came out in 91, I still have my OG box I bought at Radio Shack :)

Jeff Gerstmann

F it, I'm going to put all these up on youtube as unlisted videos when I get a chance, seems like too many people are having trouble with it.
