HI! I spent a lot of time trying to compress my feelings on 2023 into a couple of opening paragraphs at the top of a Top 10 list but it never felt right. It always felt too dismissive of the realities that seem to be facing the game industry right now. So rather than fret over it and put out something that didn't feel like it was conveying the internal conflicts I've been having about it all, I decided to sit down and just kinda get it all out into a microphone, exclusively for all y'all on this here Patreon. Thank you all for your support.

Here's a podcast about my top games of 2023, some other things that happened during the year, and an attempt to wrap it all up into something hopeful for the future.

Let’s go Lies of P game of the year!!!

Sifted Sand Records

Crime Boss Rockay City with GOTY! Finally! Someone recognizes how great that game is!

Games like Dragon's Dogma 2 and Armored Core VI has me excited that there is a subset of players ready for PS2-era games in a more premium package. Maybe budgets can be tailored because of it for lower risk projects. Thanks for getting me thinking about this, and thanks for your hard work!

I’ve been trying my hardest to get “ASS games” to be a thing. Every time I say it when my son comes over, he’s like WTAF are you talking about? Meet your Maker definitely stalled out because of how you needed resources to keep your own base going and then once your base hit level 10, it’s over. The amount of resources you need to buy a new base, to level up an existing base, and to buy upgrades makes it so you really need to play 5 or 6 hours a day doing raids just to get the resources you need. I keep thinking about checking it out again because I really loved creating bases. The way you could fuck with people and misdirect them, I loved it.

Thanks for this, Jeff, I always look forward to your GOTY lists! And honestly, I prefer waiting until a February/March timeframe to hear lists such as these. It allows the previous year's dust to settle in the mind before listing, I feel. I wish the TGAs would also take this approach, even if results may not change at all. I'd rather they occur early in a following year, similar to something like the Golden Globes and Oscars. Not that I ever expect that to happen, but I think the entirety of a calendar year's release should be taken into consideration. I mean, not that it would have won, but by this logic, Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising (released Dec 14th) might have earned itself a nomination in the Best Fighting game category at the 2023 TGAs! Best wishes to you and the whole family, Jeff!
