Elena in seventeen ,and she lives in a very, very small town, with a very limited boyfriends choice. Plus she is in a vulnerable state, she is greiving, she needs a thrill, something to snap her out pof the sadness she is feeling. So Stefan is the perfect distraction to jump in, with the naivity an trust of a small town girl would seen a smeone new, very actaractive, that is covering her with attention, misterious, thrilling. Stefan knows that, and use it to his advantage, to persue her intenselly, so she feels very wanted. Stefan has his own reason to persue Elena, reasons that are introduced with him looking at an old picture from 1864 of a girl, Katherine, that looks exactly like Elena, picture he keep in his bedroom ready available to look at. Damon also has his story introduced, why he promise to his brother an eternity of misery? What Stefan did to his own brother that is so bad to make Damon wishing him an eternity of misery? Vicky is in hospital an she said "vampire", is she going to be a vampire? It becoming a vampire so simple? Stefan didn't know that dampn was in town so, It was Damon keeping an eys on Stefan, stalking Elena at the cimitery, not the opposite. He left Vicky alive to make problem for Stefan, and there is a precise reason. In this show nothing is what it appear to be....... The "uncle" Zack,. Stefan and Damon as vampire are cearly old, we don't know how old, Zach is cearly part of their family, a human discendant, a family member, probaly in his 30s, that is a discendant of the Salvatore original family and that calls Stefan uncle, to give him a sense of family role, , he cannot call him great-great-great-great- etc.grand-uncle. Plus you made a reaaly good observation, the songs in this show are used as a voice over, they are chosen ad hoc to describe the emotional situation, the charcters emotional feelings apparent or hidden. The show is very complex, the lore is very logical, but most of all, keep in mind motivations, why they act this way, why they say this or that, everything has a motivation and a story behind. The pilot was one on the wave of Twilights success, an is not particularly indicative of what the show is going to be, and the books from which the show is taken from and make it better, are much older. So no, Twilights is bad, cringy, bad acting, simple not beleiveble love triangle, TVD is really good, great acting, very profund, very complex, beautifully written, extremelly entertaining.

By the way, the writers/producers of TVD are Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec, that are the one that revolutionised the horror genre, with the films SCREAM, so yeah TVD is a very clever thriller/horror/psycological drama
