Google Anwser Yes, Mark Ruffalo's Hulk and Edward Norton's Hulk are officially the exact same character and continuity. Edward Norton starred as Bruce Banner in 2008's The Incredible Hulk, but Mark Ruffalo took over the role starting in 2012's The Avengers. Both actors are playing the same version of Bruce Banner within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And Thats Why Mark Ruffalo Later Played Bruce Banner, Creative Control & Scripting: Norton, who was brought in late to star in and rewrite the script for The Incredible Hulk (2008), pushed for a longer, darker, and more character-driven movie. Ultimately, Marvel cut a significant amount of his footage and favored a more action-focused film. Norton was reportedly frustrated that his creative vision was largely disregarded. In 2010, when assembling the ensemble for The Avengers, Marvel Studios released a public statement announcing they would not be retaining Norton. Studio head Kevin Feige stated they wanted an actor who "embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members," publicly framing Norton as difficult to work with.
