Dave on Dave is an ongoing podcast series in which David Cho and David Chen gather together to discuss life and work. Also, usually David Cho has some harsh words to say about David Chen's stuff!

In this episode, the Daves check in on David Cho's startup venture, then talk about how hard it is to start a new podcast/startup company these days. Also the mystery of which Dave is on which Dave continues to deepen.

As someone who started a company 11 years ago, got acquired 3 years ago, and is still there…I loved this episode. 1) 100% of everything David Cho is saying resonates with me. The highs and lows, the constant worry, the loss of sleep, the thought of how great life would be if less of your self was tied to your job. To be wholly responsible (to yourself and the growing group of people you’re leading) for a thing that is also like 90% outside of your control is a really weird, intense predicament. Exciting! Invigorating! But mentally draining. 2) David Chen’s comment about doing the same thing for 15 years also hits extremely close to home, for the same reason. There has to be some relief in hitting the reset button, shedding the weight of years of your own decisions in one specific area and saying “None of that is relevant anymore.” My wife recently changed careers, and it’s been incredible to see the energy / fresh lease on life it gave her.

Sometimes you dave the Dave; sometimes the Dave daves you.

Dave, I’ve been meaning to tell you: I’m a longtime user of Overcast, having ditched the Apple Podcasts app years ago as it grew increasingly terrible. I love my Overcast, and have actually discovered and added a few podcasts to my feed based on adverts I’ve encountered on there. (I don’t pay for the service, and really don’t mind the relatively unobtrusive ads on Overcast.) That said, I realize this is a percentages game, and it will be interesting to track the “conversion rate” of ads there and elsewhere. Hope you’ll give an update on this topic at some point!

I love the role reversal - I'm 100% invested in both Daves, and I'm really happy to hear from both! I wanted to sign up for Postcard, see what I can do to help - but it's invite only. I'm posting here in case Dave Cho wants to share one for Patrons :)
