Hey folks,

David Chen here. For most of my life, I've been a big dude.

I've tried dieting, working out, lifting weights. But nothing has been enough to lose weight and keep it off.

A few years ago, the introduction of drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro offered a new path. These tirzepatide/semaglutides seemed like they could dramatically curtail one's hunger level, albeit with a lot of potential side effects. Nonetheless, I've been reading up on them and interested in exploring them as an option for myself.

My friend Scott is similar in height/weight to me and he recently started taking Zepbound. I decided to hop on a call with him to discuss his experience taking the drug. We discussed:

Why he's taking Zepbound

The cost of Zepbound (with insurance)

How much weight he's lost so far/the impact of Zepbound already

What side effects he's experienced

I know this is pretty different than the type of content I usually put out. One of the things I appreciate about this Patreon is the ability to explore different interest I have in a relatively safe space. My only goal is to provide the kind of frank and honest conversations that are difficult to find online.

I hope you find the episode interesting (and if you don't, feel free to let me know!). I don't anticipate this will be a huge part of the Patreon page, but I will probably check in with Scott 2-3 more times over the course of the next year. As always, your feedback and support and welcome and appreciated.

NOTE: This podcast does not constitute medical advice, nor is it an endorsement of any of the techniques/medications discussed. Neither of us are medical professionals. If you’re interested in any topics discussed, talk to your doctor.

Hi Dave. Haven’t listened yet but have you ever tried intermittent fasting? It’s great for you physically and most importantly, mentally. Being raised in a Buddhist household, it’s very common for monks to do it to maintain their weight and consistent mindset.

David Chen

Yes, it’s not something that’s really worked for me for weight loss, sadly

Great conversation, y'all! One friend taking Mounjaro has been experiencing depression due to their lack of interest in food. Very interesting drugs. Definitely looking forward to the follow up episodes. Also loving the eclectic nature of your patreon, Dave!

David

Intermittent fasting has been shown to work only as a caloric deficit (i.e., people typically eat less when they eat twice a day) - the actual fasting has nothing to do with it. I’ve been doing IF for 10+ years.

Wow, great discussion, thanks Dave and Scott. I’m pretty curious about these drugs but it’s hard to find information that isn’t full of hype, fear-mongering or shamey secrecy so this was a great listen. Looking forward to updates.

I was overweight for most of my life. I finally made the changes I needed to for myself about 5 years ago. Eat less bad stuff and daily exercise are the primary changes. I used to be around 60-65lbs heavier. Now I'm around 175-180lbs, where I should be. I have almost no control when there's junk food around to eat, so I just stopped brining it into the house. Daily exercise is not appealing some days, but I push through nonetheless and am always grateful I did afterwards. Initially, it was really difficult, but the results keep me on track. With all that said, I still get resentful that I can't just eat whatever I want sometimes LOL. I've found that now I'm at a reasonable weight, I really feel it if I do overeat. That's just my experience; everyone is different. I hope you can find an approach that works for you, Dave!

As someone with type 2 diabetes who couldn’t get ozempic for some time because of people seeking it as a solution for weight loss, this a hard pass, I wish there was a way to block these specific episodes from my patron feed.

David Chen

Reynaldo: I’m really sorry you had this experience. The scarcity was one of the reasons I chose not to proceed when I first got prescribed mounjaro in 2023. That said, I’m curious if the scarcity issue has resolved yet. If not, that’s definitely something I can take into account when deciding whether to explore this further. Either way: totally understand if this is not a series you can support or listen to.

Really enjoyed this episode! Thanks for branching out into unexpected areas, Dave - even if sporadic it really ups the collective value of things.

Besides the weight loss discussion, this was an interesting listen for me. I live in Denmark and work in the pharma/medtech sector (but not at Novo), so we have been hearing so much about the success of these drugs. Novo’s success is basically single-handedly transforming the job market, for good and ill. I don’t know anyone taking the drugs, but have a few friends that are medical doctors and the interest they have seen mirrors everything Scott was talking about. Interesting times!

Great episode. Very curious about the topic, even though I‘m not overweight, it‘s interesting to hear you guys describing why you might try it out. FYI I just listened to another great insight about the topic on the grey area podcast https://overcast.fm/+QLhVKrjpY I‘m looking forward to hearing updates on this topic on this podcast hopefully soon! This random topics are one of my favorites!! Keep it going Dave! The David Chen podcast is really fantastic lately! (Has been great for a long time though ;) )

Halfway through listening to this and I already paused it to go order Johann Hari’s book. This was a great suggestion. Thanks for sharing!

thank you both for sharing this and being so open about your journey. like so many other Chensky content series, I'm so invested now!

Just listened to the new Post Reports episode about this and find it to be very interesting sociologically. Adam Ragusea also had a thoughtful video pondering how this will change things. It's like the AI of body transformation - we are training ourselves to discern the difference and ascribe value judgments.
