The Kitchen Sink cookie is the only correct answer for the free cookie at Panera. It is almost double the cost of the other cookies and has everything in it (but the kitchen sink). I too have canceled my paid Kitchen Sink cookie order for a cheaper one so I can unlock the free cookie reward and redeem it on the Kitchen Sink cookie.

My dad is from rural PA and is super frugal and likes to bargain. He would simply have refused to buy the cocktail sauce if it wasn't complementary (which honestly, it should have been given the order?). He is famous for walking 12 blocks to find a free parking space and thereby delaying everyone, or taking the bus rather than Lyft or Uber. It is frustrating, but he and my mom also sent me and my sister to college with minimal loans. Just want to say, I subscribed for you, David Chen as a long time listener of your podcasts with Joanna, but I am continuing to subscribe for the delightful insights and input of @joyonapping.

(Just to be clear ...not suggesting you can fund a college education by not buying cocktail sauce and cab rides.)

"Mother, I swear to God, I will take out larger and larger loans against your grandchild's savings account every time you ask for a drink with NO ice, a second cup full of ONLY ice, and for an empty THIRD cup so you can combine them yourself to 'maximize the value of each element'...only for you to drink 1/4 and throw the rest away because 'you realized you weren't really that thirsty after all.'"

Parents are definitely not the asshole in that situation. I felt like I was losing my mind hearing them described that way. Being frugal is not a crime! And negotiating is a skill I respect and try to cultivate in myself. Granted there is a time and a place. If the person doesn’t have the power to affect price, you’re just harassing them. But in situations like with the seafood vendor, it never hurts to ask. Before it even got to that point about the cocktail sauce, I would’ve already asked if there was any breaks they could give or anything they could throw in for such an unusually large order.
