I know you’d have a special D Chen sticker READY just for me if I ran into you Dave

Jordan B.

When my grandma turned 90, she told my family that all she wanted was to go to Disneyland. The last time she had been there was in the early 1980s and she remembers it as being “the happiest place on earth.” My cousin lives in LA and via some acquaintances got a letter to the right people at Disneyland, conveying that my grandma - a survivor of Auschwitz turning 90 - wanted to go to Disneyland for her birthday. Disney provided a VIP tour for our whole family - her three kids, their spouses and her 3 grandkids. It was an amazing day and although she was in pretty good shape at the time (and still is today, about to be 98!) she didn’t ride many rides. She just wanted to be in “the happiest place” with her family. I will say that one of the highlights of the day was being taken up into the firehouse near the entrance on Main Street, where Walt had his own apartment on the second floor. It’s still furnished as it would have been in the 1960s, where according to our guide Walt would sleep many nights, and then wake up to watch Disneyland guests arrive for the day. I loved this episode and was fascinated hearing Dave especially, since it sounds like you had never been to a Disney park before? Did you ride Indiana Jones by any chance?

Mark Griffith

Team bio break here. Glad you had a great time. Loved Star Wars world.

Dave Glanz

"per hour" - very important to note!!

David Chen

Beautiful story! thank you for sharing it. Sadly, the Indiana Jones ride was down but several people mentioned that I would be a big fan.

Jordan B.

“Bio break” has always given me such a gross feeling when people use it at work. Something about it is both more sanitized AND more visceral about what is happening when we use a toilet. Just say bathroom break.

Michelle K

Loved listening to this! I was at Disneyland a few days before you, during the peak of the heatwave and it was so brutal and really hindered our time in the parks. But I’m very glad to hear you all had a good time, though I’m bummed on your behalf that you missed out on Indiana Jones. It’s probably my favorite ride at Disneyland, other than Pirates. (But I still haven’t been on Rise of the Resistance, sadly - even during a debilitating heatwave the wait was always 65+ minutes)

Carole Mariani

The tour sounds extremely cool, as a person who has never seriously considered going to Disney as an adult, it sounds like a great way to do it. And all for the cost of 23 el gato green screens

Joy o Napping

I always interpreted it as meaning other bio needs too like refilling your water bottle. But if strictly interpreted as bathroom, I think it is a bit ick

CDMatthew

This conversation made me so happy, not just because Disneyland was such a fun experience for you, but because it made my Dave Chen podcast-universe dream come true: bringing together the three of you on one episode! Congrats and good luck with the new job, Dave! (And wishing @joyofnapping good health!)

What is the name of the guide? Philander? Phil lander? Genuinely want to know it’s driving me crazy.

David Chen

Philander, and apparently the root word his mom used has a different meaning?
