First and foremost: I’m so happy to hear of the positive news about Joy’s condition…just knowing what’s going on has to be a huge relief. (You’re among the sanest people I know, all the more impressive to me when I hear what a crazy-making situation you’ve been in for years.) Second, a question about the crisis we’re in right now as a country: how much, do you think, of the drive toward war is being driven by the religious extremists that are slavishly following that man? I’ve been reading for years about the “New Apostolic Reformation” (NAR) and seven mountains theology, and it seems their influence has grown exponentially the last ten years. (They seem to THIRST for death and want to hasten the rapture.)

Also: looking forward to y’all seeing MATERIALISTS and sharing your thoughts! (Following up PAST LIVES is a tough job for Celine Song. FWIW, I enjoyed it.)

So lovely to hear Joy’s update…may the journey continue in such a positive way!

Connor Rock

I am so happy to here about Joy’s update! I have a close family member in her mid 20’s who found out maybe 5 years ago or less that she has POTS. The most frustrating thing is the way some family is dismissive of her diagnosis. I do wonder if a conversation with her about Cerebrospinal fluid leak, just in case, might be something to talk with her about with love, just in case. I know how difficult it’s been for her and her wife. They have a service dog, that has been a literal lifesaver, that has helped tremendously. Also, in regards the basically daily terrifying incidents in our country that signify just how far past the rubicon we’ve gone, for us, because of budgetary constraints, we’ve had to consider whether we can even afford to leave, so I think a part of my brain has started disassociating for sheer survival reasons, while still protesting when I can and calling our representatives as much as I possibly can. You guys are great thanks for giving me a place to share some thoughts!

Joy o Napping

It is definitely hard to distinguish POTS from CSF leak... the first expert I saw said that most of his practice is trying to tell one from the other. I wish her (and her wife) the very best as all of this is quite a journey and you can get burnout just from the journey of dealing with the medical system! If she seems interested to learn more about it, I can share a patient education video from a few years ago.

Connor Rock

Thank you Joy!! I am going to approach it gently but if she does see interested, I will definitely reach back out! That would be wonderful! Thank you, thank you!

Chris

Thank you for sharing. Great to hear about Joy. Can't wait to see new improved Joy, given she was already a badass.

Thank you for the candid update on Joy’s healthcare journey! So happy to hear that the visit to CO and recently the Mayo Clinic has been so successful in treatment and answers. I’m thrilled for you! As I’ve commented before, I’ve been following along avidly as a fellow spoonie. I can relate to being a nerd when it comes to taking your healthcare into your own hands, attending seminars, researching, forums, etc. I’m one of those that you mentioned that got POTS after my first (and only) Covid infection in 2022. Since then I’ve been diagnosed with a myriad of conditions and syndromes (POTS, ME/CFS, Long Covid, nerve damage, organ damage, etc). I’ve always been curious what a visit to Mayo would be like. I’ve heard mixed reviews from fellow LC or ME patients due to the lack of specialty, biomarkers, and treatment in the field in general, even at Mayo. However, if any of my specific diagnoses (with approved treatments) are to worsen, I’ve strongly considered looking into a trip to Mayo Clinic. Currently, I’m fighting for my life vis-à-vis specialty healthcare, diagnostics, and most importantly social support (disability insurance and SSDI). It’s been a brutal battle and most days I feel like Sisyphus, but with a fatiguing illness on top. I’m strongly contemplating traveling out of state for specialized testing (2-day CPET) to assist in building my medical file evidence for disability purposes. If you have any travel tips (likely roadtrip ~12 hrs, but maybe flight), it’d be much appreciated. Otherwise, I would love other advice too, but not even sure what to ask for tbh. This has been the most sobering, difficult, and frankly dehumanizing experience of my life. Thank you both again for the entertainment and joy that you bring to my small life. I’ve been an avid Filmcast listener for years and have grown fond of Dave, Joy, other Dave, Devindra, and Jeff. I’m glad we could have this fulfilling parasocial relationship haha. Best, Sean

Joy o Napping

Sean, I am VERY happy to talk to you about all of this. I have heard the same mid sort of things about Mayo Clinic for Long Covid and ME/CFS and think that reputation is probably justified. There are things that they are VERY good at and things they aren't, and of course it comes down to how they are structured and incentivized. I have had a lifetime of medical travel as well and can share ideas there too! Are you on the filmcast Slack? I could message you there or we could email/whatsapp/signal... just let David know the best way to reach you (davechen@davechen.net)

So happy to hear about the health news!

Glenn Downing

Wonderful podcast episode! Huge thanks to both of you for being willing to share. Joy mentioned that she had put in her symptoms to Google many times with no accurate diagnosis. I'd be very interested in knowing if any of the paid LLMs (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, etc.) could perform better. Continued good luck on Joy's path to healing!

Hayley

Thank you so much for sharing. I was fine with you being vague about things since it’s truly none of our business and the discussion was still valuable. However, your openness will help other people. I adore you guys and happy you are in my ears.
