Stephen David Miller

Since I kept things pretty vague in my Cannes review for Eddington (no one had even seen a trailer yet afaik!), I’ll share the same thoughts I shared with David Cho after he messaged me in shock post-recording: — Basically, I assume good intent with Aster, probably clouded by having heard him on podcasts and stuff for years. The way I read the movie isn’t that it’s drawing a false equivalence between two sides. I see it as more interior, like Beau Is Afraid. Like taking every intrusive thought you had when you were stuck at home behind a screen, and blowing it up to ridiculous proportions. The degree to which it draws the Left as “annoying” felt, to me, like the degree to which a neurotic progressive would question themselves. It was such a weird, self-conscious time. I think he’s smashing together left and right media extreme talking points, not because they’re equivalent but because anyone scrolling at home metabolized both of them at once. Your point about the only interiority being given to Joaquin is a good one, but I just feel like it’s a given that we are not on his side. You don’t cast Joaquin to play relatable characters. Tl;dr, to me it’s a fever dream from the mindset of a doomscrolling liberal who can’t separate fact from fiction, because the barrage of intrusive thoughts don’t obey logic. Masking does save lives in this universe, but also Antifa is a real, but also there is a big conspiracy by the government, but also we’re all a little cringe, but also the police really are murdering people, but also — etc. Just a shitload of “but also”s smashed together.

But did you know about the antipasto lady? :)

CDMatthew

Mainly want to express my happiness about Joy’s improved health….hooray! Also: one of the most disturbing things about seeing the awful movie EDDINGTON was the one guy in the theatre at my screening who was cackling and giggling throughout, INCLUDING WHEN THERE WAS NOTHING REMOTELY FUNNY GOING ON. That, more so than the movie itself, is a barometer of these times we’re living through. Also: have Dave and Joy seen MATERIALISTS yet? I’ve not heard a peep about it on the Filmcast, which is puzzling to me. Also: thanks to y’all, I’m off to see the Wizard at Sphere in September! Appreciate…

David Chen

Re: MATERIALISTS - I really would like to see it, it's just not something I've been able to make happen. I will probably be first in line once the VOD hits as I know it's spawned a lot of conversation.

I would just like to comment on Alaska - it is amazing - wild and beautiful. It will feel a bit like PNW on steroids- familiar but more wild. And no cruise. 100%. We went last year and 3 of 9 got Covid.

CDMatthew

Looking forward to getting your thoughts, whenever. I was OBSESSED with Past Lives, seeing it three times in the theatre (I dragged friends to see it), and I think Song remains a fresh and promising talent. Thanks!

Chris

Terrific discussion. Had a few big laughs listening. More cross-over episodes please! Thanks

Alaska is definitely worth seeing. Denali was incredible, and if you want to watch bears catching salmon right out of the river, Katmai National Park, especially Brooks Falls, is the place to be. (Tickets sell out fast) It’s amazing to walk around the area and see bears all the time. Here’s a live cam of the falls if you want to check it out: https://www.youtube.com/live/73-EekdVVU8?si=B9F7mH4yjsgfYHID If you’re more into stunning landscapes, I actually preferred Iceland over Alaska and over the Banff area. The waterfalls and ice fields there are absolutely breathtaking, and from Portugal it is just a quick flight away. 😉

David Cho

We're all big Iceland fans over here!!!!

David Cho

LOL NO ONE KNOWS AB "antipasto lady"!!!!!

loved the convo--unvarnished thoughts are what I pay for ..It did make me wonder if Russian non aristos felt like this reading War and Peace -I should be glad my comfort level is much higher than a Czarist Russian peasant though and that the podcast isn't literally speaking in another language like Tolstoy used to do for his "cosmopolitan" class.

Wrt USOpen: We stay at hotels in Flushing Chinatown & walk maybe 30’ / 1.5 miles to the tennis complex. Idk if y’all are looking for a more elevated experience, but it’s an easy walk & faster than subway or driving. Plus some of the hotels (Esp the Marco LaGuardia) have shuttles to & from the Open! And you pass by great restaurants on the way home. I know the DC, Cincinnati, & Indian Wells tourneys are well-run & good experiences, but we rate the US Open highest
