The eXpat Files is a new series of podcast episodes that chronicle David and @joyofnapping's conversations as they consider whether/how to move to another country.

In this episode (recorded several weeks ago), David and Joy discuss some of the things they are considering as they decide whether or not to make the big move, including medical considerations, logistics, and the power of inertia.

Listening while wearing my LCD Sound-system shirt while walking the dog in Issaquah.

Joy o Napping

Crazy that you walk your dog in central Washington!

Dave and Joy O, This is better than any season of Love is Blind! Good marriage-ing, you guys! I, too, am deliberating over an upcoming int’l move and it is thrilling to hear how you each approach the decision. Your care for each other is always bigger than your frustrations. Keep making space for each other and keep putting out the raw, unlistenable episodes we love! 🤣💖 Thanks for sharing the realest moments!! Good luck w Dave’s sinuses and stomach!

Listening to this, was very interesting. There should be a sigh scale, Dave had palpable sighs of great magnitude. Joy only had one. :)

The thing that fascinates me the most about these conversations isn't your decision to move to Portugal or not, but how you two approach the decision making process together. I'm glad you released this. David Chen at his most "maddening" seems is so logical and calm (while driving!). The patience and desire to understand each other is inspiring. I appreciate you sharing a glimpse into your relationship like this. I hope you are both healthy and happy wherever you are!

I for one was following the el gato green screen discussion perfectly well

Great episode as usual guys! Christmas in Europe beats Christmas in America out of the water so you guys are in for a treat. Joy mention she has family in Germany. I think Germany has the best Christmas markets. Have you ever spent Christmas in Europe?

Thanks for sharing this conversation guys! I love the joke about "turning the keys". So much so that... please forgive this pitch, but you know what would be really fun? If and when the time comes, you make a video of you both turning the keys - make a little sign that says "Portugal", tape it above a lock, you both look at each other, nod, and turn. The Chenheads and Joycolytes will love it!

Writing a check to Sarah Palin would make me miss my exit, too. Amazing conversation, I was getting emotional as well, and it's not even my decision. I so appreciate the vulnerability and bravery it takes to share this with the Patreon audience. Thank you both.

Irrespective of what is unfolding here in the U.S., I really hope you both take the opportunity to live abroad for a year or more (maybe at least until February 2029?). Most of us are not even in a position to even entertain this option. Inertia is a very real factor. But I am looking forward to hearing about your overcoming that and reaching escape velocity. Taking at least a week-long trip to Portugal together sounds like a great idea, assuming Jan. 1 is the emigration day. No Fetanyl, lol.
