Things that astonish me: • Joy’s persistence and stick-to-itiveness and can-do attitude in this incredibly daunting process (and in dealing with her illness, too!)…without going crazy and while maintaining a sense of clarity and sanity. • Dave’s ramped-up amount—and quality—of creative content during this fraught time (with so much going on, Portugal-related and otherwise!)…with videos on Insta and YouTube, multiple podcasts, Decoding Everything, and now ANOTHER dot com! Holy crap I don’t know how you do all this! I’m rooting for you two to make it all the way there, and I’m looking forward to hearing more of your adventure, and your perspectives on American politics from the new vantage point. Always grateful for your insights and learnings!

Kudos to both of you for seeing this through. I only visited Portugal once but loved it. Your journey has inspired mine as I look to potentially repatriate to Canada after 40 years in the US. Excited for both of you.

Chris

So excited for you both. Can’t wait for the travel series!

There might be something on Meetup for Portuguese practice groups in Porto! I live in Houston and there are meetups for lots of different languages. Good way to make friends too

In Sweden we have something called "language café" where new swedes can talk to swedes. Quite loose and not tutoring, just talk about the weather or whatever you want. It's very chill and quite popular. Maybe there is something similar in Portugal...

Joy o Napping

What a lovely and welcoming idea !

Mark Griffith

Giving your praise : that was a good episode. :)

I was going to make exactly this point. SFI* didn't work for me. I had time, but no personnummer, then I had elegibility but no time as it was during job hours! * Swedish for Immigrants.

I am curious why you two seem to be afraid of admitting you’re spending money to make this dream real - it’s ok that you are spending money because that’s how the world works and the tools at your disposal are at a cost. You are also paying into their economy with the service you’re using. My job, I’m sure Dave is very familiar, is a tech program manager and we are basically paid to solve problems and solve quickly. That’s of value and it’s ok if it’s $2k or $5k or whatever 😅 getting off the soap box now

David Chen

Agreed! I think we know people that would rather DIY so we just want to acknowledge that the easier path does require some money and privilege.

Satorii

Fair! I just don’t want you to feel bad for that
