This story is maddening! Sure, you paid to make the problem go away, but you never should have had to. They fundamentally can not be honorable and respectable due to their initial action of wildly accusing someone without evidence for something that doesn’t even matter! But fascinating as always to listen and hear the immigrant experience from the other side, just makes me think (even more) about the immigrant experience in the USA right now, the ICE facilities, how terrifying and unjust it is to be at such a power imbalance, whether you’re facing a gun or being shaken down scratched paint on a goddamned Kia. Thankfully, as you pointed out, it’s been only the latter for you two in Portugal. (Sorry to hear about your Mom, Joy! I hope she recovers as quickly as she can! My mom is having heart surgery in April, and I’ll be flying from CA to meet her for the surgery in Cleveland and then helping her fly home to Florida, and totally agree with you—what’s money for if not for going home and helping family. I wish more people felt that way! Safe travels.)

In case it's helpful with the rote memorization of restaurant phrases, I highly recommend an app called Anki. It takes a bit of setup, but once you get it up and running it's fantastic. It uses spaced repetition flash cards, so if you get the flash card right it will show it to you a day later, and if you get it right again, it shows you three days later, and so on with expanding intervals. But if you get it wrong the interval resets. You can easily build your own cards, and I would bet you can even export phrases from the translator app to Anki. I've been using it for a couple of years as I study Japanese and can't recommend it highly enough!
