Hey folks: Just some quick comments on the new, exciting trailer for Matt Reeves' The Batman.

Not polished enough for YouTube. Not short enough for Twitter. Just right for Patrons? Let me know.

Batman Trailer Reaction

Comments

Jonathon Sutton

It’s hard to imagine a future where I will be sitting in a theater watching The Batman, but who knows. Nice to dream. I, personally, would love more frequent, less polished, short one-off bits of content from you, but no more than you feel inspired to produce!

David Chen

Thanks Jonathan! If people enjoy this stuff (and it makes them feel like they are getting something meaningful out of the Patreon), I'd love to make more stuff like this.

David Chen

Another question: How is the viewing experience for this video? It's a private Vimeo link. Does it work okay on desktop/mobile? Was it annoying in any way to watch it? Thanks for the feedback.

Mark C Warner

This was perfect. One, news of 'The Batman' traioer did not hit my feed yet. Second, once i saw that it did and that you wanted to comment on it was wonderful. Cause after watching that trailer, i wanted to enthusiastically geek for a moment with some community that i frequent.

Anthony Ramil

I love this quick little bonus video. Sometimes I don't have time in a day for a full ChenTube video or Chencast episode, so it's nice to have a bite-size dose of Dave.

Maxwell Jacobson

“Currently in production” caught my eye... is that normal that they’d share footage before they’re even done shooting it?

Jonathon Sutton

Watched via the Patreon app on my iPhone, did not notice any inferior experience compared to regular iOS Safari. Perfectly fine, which is to say, didn’t even think about the quality, it just worked.

Alex Crumb

I’m betraying my reply to your poll by actually watching your content on here and not just blindly supporting like I planned. I think because I get push notifications for it... anyways, I really enjoyed this. The only thing I’d like more is if you showed your initial viewing. I suppose if you watch it without much reaction it wouldn’t be so meaningful, but if there are some natural, “oh cool” or “nice” exclamations, I think that would be enough. Otherwise, yes, generally enjoyed this quick bite (a real quibi?). PS - watched on mobile with no issue

Anthony Ramil

Worked perfectly on my mobile device. Easy to switch to full screen and comment afterwards.

Jonathon Sutton

Yes, the push notifications! Was cool to get “breaking” Dave Chen content!

Love the quick takes. I'm sad Batman movies are trapped in such a grim tone. It's been more than 2 decades since Clooney Batman. I'm sure the stink has worn off and we can have a less heavy mood on the character already. Scott Snyder is doing an almost surrealist noir in the comics to critical acclaim and I hope we can take the movies there. If not live action then I hope DC will chance it on an animated feature.

David Chen

Rare but normal for a "comic-con-like" event like this

David Chen

Damnit Crumb I thought you were in this just for the generous support and not for the bonuses (j/k)

Mark C Warner

I love it and it helps differentiate it from your youtube pieces. The annoying aspect is rhat when i watch it on mobile (Android) and i move from portrait to landscape during the video, it does not keep the time marker. Everyrhing elae was on point.

Ryan Blanz

Really dug this video. I thought the quality was really good.

Dan Flanegan

Loved this trailer! I'm a big fan of The Dark Knight but for some reason this seems to come closer to the Batman of my childhood which really centered around Frank Miller's Batman... dark, brooding, brutal. When he unloads on that one follower / henchman... that sealed the deal for me. I agree with your comments on the beats of the trailer. This just jumped to the top of my anticipation list.

Dan Flanegan

And yes to more of these quick takes!

Adam Rosalky

I know you avoid trailers but these types of trailer breakdowns are great. Was this filmed commentary your first watch through or did you watch it ahead for prep?

Michael Gray

I like this content and want more trailer analysis but I don't want you to ruin your unsullied lifestyle!

The problem with Batman being solo in these movies is that Batman is always the serious one... so with no light-hearted character to play off that, Batman is gonna be dark/somber and without much levity. That is Batman. If you try a Batman that tells jokes, it’ll be because Nightwing is in the suit... and a Batman who grins will let his enemies know “I’m not Batman.”

Andres L.

I AirPlay’d it from my phone to my TV and it worked great. 👍🏽

Much more hyped for this movie now that I’ve seen the trailer. I personally love the darker tone and just want a competently-told story, which I think we’ll get with Reeves. One notable thing about the trailer: they didn’t show off the entire cast with tight close-ups where you can clearly identify each star. The cut is centered around Batman (not even Bruce Wayne) and only gives you glimpses or voice overs of the other characters. They’re selling the movie on its merits, not its star power.

David Chen

Did a little bit of prep. There are others on YouTube who go into MUCH greater detail than me....

Wil Knoble

Quick takes = please

David Chen

Very possible! That or the footage is just not ready/done yet....

Tony C

Killer trailer. Sign me up and put me down for more. Different actors, different creative teams, different tones, all Batman stories.  All at the same time too. No need to wait 2 or 3 years between films- there's an audience for 2 or 3 Batman movies a year. Shadow of the Bat, Legends of the Dark Knight, Caped Crusader, Brave and Bold, Black and White, '66, Arkham Asylum, Batman Beyond, Court of Owls, Knightfall, Detective, The Long Halloween, the list goes on.

Wil Knoble

Helping you IS the something meaningful :) great video - watched on iPhone and it was great quality. Have a good and hopefully restful Sunday.

Jonathon Sutton

Dave, eh, I’m less interested in you competing with other youtubers and more interested in your specific take, however deep/shallow it may be.

My main purpose in supporting your Patreon is to support you in however small amount that is. However, I want to see this type of content. I would be totally fine if this was shared on your YouTube channel with everyone, but if you do not feel like it is polished enough, I understand. I still want to see it, though. In other words, this is exactly the type of content that will keep me excited about this Patreon.

DAVID, I was pumped to get this notification--I'm down for the hot takes and ready for this Batman. I especially loved the break in the middle of the trailer to show that beatdown--such a cool touch. Though Pattison vs Batfleck in The Flash...what's the DCEU doing? What'd everyone think of the rest of DC fandome? -- we got full Cheetah reveal, Suicide Squad, Snyder cut, etc.

Mich

Separately, David, your videos look slick and sound perfect. I dig the sort of high contrast spotlight at selfie angle with the black t-shirt and blurred portrait background. I've noticed this vibe in your videos lately. [chef's kiss emoji] Can you share details about the setup, equipment your using?

Pixel-davis

I enjoyed this Dave, great Patreon content

David Chen

Been thinking about doing something like that

Zia Syed

Thanks for posting this Dave...as someone who is not as plugged in on breaking entertainment news, I had only just heard about this trailer a few minutes before getting notification of your new Patreon content. Was a perfect way to quickly watch it and hear your thoughts. I'd be happy with more easy-to-digest content like this.

Ross K

Decided to watch the trailer in order to view this & am glad I did - great patreon content, Dave. Looks dark but has me hopeful of a different variation of dark Batman. Enjoyed the quick take, more ‘quick bites’ would be awesome.

Tami Lefko

Yes, keep these quick videos coming! What jumped out at me was Geoffrey Wright saying “Does any of this mean anything to you?” which reminded me of one of his more significant Westworld lines. :-)

Judson White

Love the trailer analysis. I haven’t been paying too much attention to the production so I wouldn’t have realized that was Colin Farrell without you pointing that out. I’m still not buying Pattinson as the lead character, but I’ll keep an open mind. I definitely avoid trailers for movies I know I want to see, but I’m still on the fence with this one (lost interest after Nolan left the franchise) so this video piqued my interest. I’d definitely enjoy more videos like this, assuming it’s not for a movie I’m trying to see unsullied.

Martin

Liked this a lot. Short and sweet. Bite sized Chen.

Mark Marinaro

These little content drops are great, and make backing you on Patreon all the better. Keep em up

Matt Folley

Like the short content, quick watch when you have a spare 10 mins. Cool trailer but don’t really feel like I need another batman film right now. Would much rather see something new with the same cast, crew and budget - but that’s just dreamland isn’t it!
