Despite my recent medical fiasco, I managed to pull myself together for long enough to put together a quick video review of Wonder Woman 1984, which I found to be disappointing. Thanks, as always, Patrons for making my work possible.

Did you see Wonder Woman 1984 on HBO Max or in theaters this weekend? Feel free to share SPOILER-Y reactions in the comments below.

So disappointing, a huge schmaltzy confusing mess of a movie with like 12 minute of decent footage.

Eric Wennlund

This movie, aside from casting, felt like a movie from the 80s more than one set in the 80s. The campy tone fits better with the Donner Superman movies more than modern action films.

Clunky, questionable, don’t think about it too much plot points aside... I loved it. Pascal, Wiig, the Gadot-Pine chemistry, the 80s flare, the jet, the golden armor (visual only) were all great. Wonder Woman vs Cheetah was like 1,000 of my childhood dreams come true. Of course, I also see the issues and wish it had been a better movie--one about just Diana and Barbara and the birth of Cheetah would've been so cool. But that wasn't this, so count me grateful for those positive moments until part 3.

Dave, does WW84 colour your expectations for Patty Jenkins' upcoming Star Wars Rogue Squadron film?

David Chen

Tough to say. Movies are made under a very different circumstances. Who knows what the SW creative team will be like to work with

John Halski

100% agree, and that was a real plus for me. It helps that I was raised on exactly that type of 80s cinema. It was a real breath of fresh air to me. The racial/ethnic stereotypes are a low point, but also (sadly) in keeping with the genre. The high points—the idealism, the moral core, the character beats, the light-hearted action that never takes itself too seriously—all put this on the top shelf of CBMs for me. WW84 put an emotional truth over plot mechanics or (good lord) “fitting within the DCEU”, and I am here for it.
