We're trying out a new thing today: My friend and colleague David Cho typically has opinions on my work online and he usually shares them with me via text. I decided to record one of our chats in a series I'm going to tentatively refer to as "Dave on Dave." The objective is to give you as listeners a venue to hear me reflect on my work being critiqued and analyzed.

I have no idea if this is interesting at all, or if it's unflattering/painful/too navel-gazey, but I assume you will let me know! Either way, hope you enjoy it and thanks so much to all of you Patrons for giving me the space to try out stuff like this. I appreciate you.

Phenomenal analysis, Dave. And, Dave, I love you man — the /Filmcast isn’t about movies, never has been; it’s about using movies to grease the wheels of difficult conversations and revealing more of oneself than one might have if not for seeing that film, with those people at that time in that place and catching up afterward, talking about the movie, but really, like the /Filmcast, you’re just talking about life. I’m so thankful you and Adam, Jeff, and Devindra have allowed us to listen in. Can’t wait for the next Dave on Dave! And its more serious, incisive spin-off: David on David.

Gotta say I feel bad for Dave C when David C provides his honest (if sometimes a little harsh!) take on Dave C's work but I remain impressed by how well Dave C takes on criticism/feedback. Would listen to more.

This felt like listening to Dave at a psychiatrist. 😄 Loved it.

Had no idea you were on TikTok until two weeks ago when you showed up on my For You page!

Love this Dave on Dave series. The Tik Tok conversation was fascinating, Cho is a great sounding board for Chen and acts as a FOIL to Chen’s philosophy when it comes to creativity, how it manifests itself and the attention one gets from it.

To be honest, I felt the same way David Cho stated about the mask guidance convo. I get your intentions was not to wag your finger at people taking off their mask but the tone still felt that way. On another note, love the re honesty between you two, let’s keep Dave on Dave going!

This was great. Hope it becomes a regular series.

I think David Cho perfectly articulates how it comes across when you and the podcast panel are against the new mask guidance. It really appears odd, when the panel who is trusting in the science and the CDC on the original mask guidance are now skeptical when their guidance is one you disagree with. It had me scratching my head tbh. And I think David Chen perfectly articulates what is a large part of the subtext of the thinking behind that skepticism is really about, which is that the people who didn't want to wear masks are gonna find any excuse to harass us masked people now that it now fits their narrative. I think that is really what we should be saying about this new guidance, rather than being against taking off our masks altogether. I too was skeptical until I heard the reporting that CDC was actually reviewing the data and it was not political or aspirational. Most of it is about the fact that even if all the non-vaccinated lie, the mRNA vaccines are so gd good, that the vaccinated are still safe. It's kind of amazing just how good the mRNA vaccines have turned out to be. Having said all of that. My mask is staying on my face with strangers. Mostly because I just want to make it a habit and I have this fear that we'll get new data later on that shows that we are gonna need a booster shot six months from now, and around that timeframe we should be wearing masks to stay safe once our front line immunity wears off. I don't want to be caught thinking I was safe, not knowing my defenses degraded over time.

@daveChen, to answer your question from a listener perspective why people drop out of subscription. For me, I have a number of causes that I want to support per month with a limited budget, so I rotate in and out of creators on a regular basis.
